A: Pours with a deep, khaki colored head, frothy and soapy, and a mahogany, not quite black body.
S: Apple is immediately apparent (slightly tart and juicy, think granny smith), as is roastiness, and a certain sharpness.
T: Apple is definitely here, and with it an astringency that is not altogether pleasant. The apple comes off a as a granny smith at first but feels more like a red apple as it marries with the roastiness and what little chocolate can crawl out from under the astringency, there is a subtle, but deep grape presence here as well.
M: Thick and viscous, but decently enough carbonated.
O: Probably my least favorite of the Gordo Variants, but still excellent nonetheless. If you've never had El Gordo before, I wouldn't make this your first glass if given the choice. This is still an excellent beer, but I think it will kill with about six months more age on it.

Thanks to the Grey Bastard (hat tip!) from Arkansas, whoever he is, for sending me this. 750ML bottle split with my wife.

Black, not grey, is the issue of the day, & wood & apple brandy sludge off the surface. No beer in the nose, but hey, that’s OK. I like what it is.

El Gordo – Apple Brandy Barrel Aged is close to straight apple brandy. The base beer, so thick & sturdy on its own, vanishes under a falling Barad-dur of stone & orcs. Strong apple brandy, oak dominates, with a gentle, lake-like undercurrent of sweet malts, mild roast, raisin, & pine from the base beer. A touch boozier than the base beer, but that might just be my impaired judgement talking.

Not much of a step up from the base beer, mostly because it’s MIA. But the barrel is lovely. Very good beer.
