12oz bottke into a matching hotd 20th anniversary wine glass. The brew appears a murkey brown color with less than a dozen bubbles that get agitated towards the surface and break making the brew look still. Clear alcohol legs droop down the wall of the glass.
The aroma is very much quad-like with a sweet maltiness like raisins blended with molasses. A bit of green yeastiness is present with more dark fruity alcohol coming out with every whiff. A little earthen or dusty with chocolate and brandy-like booze and oak. Faint vanilla and caramel aspect with almost a milk chocolate character emerges as it gets warm.
The taste is boozy but equally sweet. Raisins and chocolate immediately come to mind blended with vinous brandy booze quality and brown sugar. Faint licorice notes mingle with old oak barrel thats slightly earthen and musty. Leather really becomes pronounced as it warms up with the booze feeling solvent with increasing large sips. Once it goes beyond ideal temperature, some herbal hops are felt mixing with that previously mentioned green yeastiness.
This is a medium to fuller bodied brew that despite having sediment in the bottle is nearly completely still. It is a hell of an awesome sipper that is deeply complex and enjoyable with suggestions of barrel aging and plenty of booze contrasted by residual sweetness. However, its flatness is a bit disappointing. Just even a little carbonation would have helped assist the feel and move the flavors across the palate a little better. Initial impression almost seems like this is an alcoholic version of a tootsie rool. It is very nice. However, it has some green yeasty accents to it that are a little distracting. If some extended aging helps clean this brew up and give it just a little carb, we are looking at a brew with serious potential to be a top favorite in the style. However, this is rated as-is.

2013 vintage - poured from a 12oz bottle into my Westvleteren chalice. Served at 47F.
Clear garnet body with copper and carmine highlights. No head or lacing; thin fast running legs.
Dense aromatics suggest leather, figs, prunes, burgundy, and a hint of sherry. Toffee, and candied ginger along with a hint of clove emerges as the ale warms.
Sweet boozy palate entry - flavors follow the nose with additional vinuous qualities and a touch of chocolate torte, ganache or buttercream. Complex medium finish, moderate oxidation, hints of ceylon tea and Turbinado sugar.
Medium-bodied, nearly still, oily, warming (not fusel) and moderately astringent.
Superb contemplative beverage that pushes the boundaries of what a "beer" can be (making it dificult to rate to style, let alone as a clone of Pannepot Reserva).

12 ounce bottle from their 20th anniversary in 2013. Calvados, cedar, sherry, just a hint of Belgian esters on the nose. Vinous tannins, Meyer lemon, Bartlett pear, candi sugar, some bright acidity early on the palate. The label claims mild carbonation, but this bottle is virtually still. That produces a much thinner feel than expected given the syrupy, muddy appearance. I wish I'd had a Pannepot recently enough to serve as an interesting comparison, but this does have some of the same mild astringency and pleasant oxidation. Would love to have some more of this.

Sampling a 2013 12 oz bottle poured into my snifter. Part of my recent cellar order from Hair of the Dog.
Beer is cellar temp and has been stored as such for a few months at this point after arriving at my house.
The beer pours a deep mahogany color with some garnet highlights. No light passes through my glass. I do keep the last few drops from entering as it is full of sediment and I dont want it. The beer is still and very short lived frothy small bubbles come up when I pour from elevation, but they dont stick around.
Aroma is dark malt molasses and red grape, very port wine type character with some dark fruit and a bit of a tart note and red grape. Definitely a vinous character to the nose. Hops and ABV are absent.
First sip reveals a still beverage as expected. Body is medium and texture is a little slick. Physical traits make for easy drinking, but booziness slows me down a bit.
Flavor is similar to nose, very port wine in character, dark red grape and plum notes with some tart acidity on each sip. No hops, and a bit of warming heat on each swallow. This is very much a sipper and is again very vinous in experience.
I am enjoying this brew and how it is slowing down my night for me. May not be for every one and definitely feels less like beer and more like wine at this point.

excited about this one, it's quad season
poured into a sn snifter
looks muddy brown, but it was expected
nose smells ok but i'm getting a lot of sour cherry, i dunno if this is a bad bottle, but it's ok, not amazing.
taste follows nose unfortunately. not overly sour but something not right. taste a hint of sour brown. aside from that it's an ok quad nothing like regular penne
medium bodied, alright i guess
really big let down! 4 times the price of much better quads. even if this is a bad bottle, or worth the risk for the asking price, definite pass. pick up a few st bernardus instead
didn't finish the bottle
