Bottle shared with Lingenbrau at HotD. Pours midnight black with a lack of head. There aren't too many beers that I can sit with for a long time and just enjoy the nose. This is most definitely one of them. I would probably be equally as happy smelling and drinking this beer. I was getting a nice amount of nuttiness, along with strong notes of raisins and black licorice. The bourbon was definitely coming through. This was just a beast and super inviting. I was very excited to get into it. The taste was mind blowing. I haven't been this excited about a beer in a long time. Huge raisin, black licorice, nuts (I was getting Brazil nuts), vanilla and bourbon. As it warmed, we definitely picked up more of the marshmallow. A burnt wood taste was in there as well. The mouthfeel was crazy - VERY creamy. Just a perfect beer, IMO.

Shared a 2015 bottle with Beersnake1 at the source. Here's a quick review based off memory...

Pitch black and flat, clean and menacing looking.

Unusual but intoxicating salty peanut shell aroma over tons of chocolate, molasses, and alcohol.

As Tim stated, "The most black licorice heavy stout I've ever had!", and I couldn't agree more. Plenty of char, booze, and chocolate as well.

Again, we both agreed on this having an absurdly enjoyable creaminess to it. So smooth, and the lack of carbonation was not missed at all. Warming, but more mellow than its 14% tag would imply.

This was an incredible experience. Worth the price tag, so much so that we bribed the bar tender for some to-go.

He didn't budge.

Cheers, and thanks for the share Tim!

There’s no question that this is an HOTD version of a RIS. It’s really great, but much more like an old ale to me. It’s lovely to look at, but not much like a typical stout in that it’s dark but nearly crystal clear - light comes through the very middle of the glass with a nice dark amber color. The aroma is intense, boozy and fruity above all, honey/molasses malts, vanilla and basil. The taste then offers even more, finally opening some wonderful stoutish dark malts, spice and chocolate. It’s uncarbonated, so the feel is unusual, but really nice - subtle and rich. I’m a big fan of HOTD’s unique style of brewing and this is exactly that, applied to a stout.

No head. No carbonation.

Dark brown color. Nearing black.

Very complex beer. Nice bourbon and oak flavors. Molasses, toffee, and caramel. Raisins and figs. Some cocoa. Vanilla.

Full bodied. Smooth. Flat. A little roast in the finish.

A great beer with a ton of great flavors. Other than it being a little flat (which doesn't bother me too much), this is amazing stuff.
