Summer 2013 batch, poured into a tulip glass.

Aroma - Strong citrus and piney smells, a hint of tropical fruit/pineapple.

Appearance - Very cloudy, low clarity (almost opaque) and much darker orangey-brown than I remember it being. Head is white and short-lived.

Flavor - Immediate citrus-rind bitterness followed by a light caramel malt flavor. Finishes with grapefruit and pine notes. More than a hint of astringency.

Mouthfeel - A bit fuzzy/chunky, actually. The carbonation is nice, but the gritty texture is kind of off-putting.

Overall Impression - I usually love Blue Dot a lot more than this. The mouthfeel made it less refreshing than usual, and the astringency was only slightly unpleasant. The hop profile is great, the citrus/grapefruit/pine thing really lingers on the palate.

Light malt, heavy citrus hops. Similar to Julius but not as citrusy. Bitterness lingers, perhaps too much. More pine than I would like. Overall solid beer. Would drink again, great summer beer. ..............................................................

Pretty good looking beer, but a pretty awful head w/ no retention. Hazy golden color.

Big and wonderful smell. Filled the room simply by popping the cap. Mostly big and sweet citrus notes: pineapple, grapefruit, orange, with some warm sweetness. The best description I can think of in the smell is that of an orange cream popsicle :)

A pretty full bodied and tasty brew. It's not exactly what I was expecting, especially in terms of sweetness (it's on the low end), but the beer is very good nonetheless. I taste some orange/grapefruit peel, resiny bitterness, followed by that rich creaminess on the backend. Do I taste some citra or mosaic in there?

Beer is creamy, medium mf, low-medium carb.

I find this beer quite interesting and unique. I get such an interesting hop bouquet from the flavor and absolutely love the smell here. It's actually even improving a bit as it warms. I am very satisfied for my first HofD offereing!

On Tap At Hop Devil Grill NYC. Being that only 7 people have reviewed this beer I consider it a really good find.
This DIPA poured a really dark golden yellow color that was slightly cloudy, with a thick bright white head, and a really long lasting lace that remained around the edge of the glass the entire pint.
The smell was of predominantly strong hops, with a little fruity yeast, and some peach/apricot/tangerine scents coming up as well.
The taste was surprisingly balanced given the strong hop nose that this beer had(not that the hops didn't shine, I was just surprised that the malt made itself known as much as it did). There were fruity hops with apparent citrus/peach flavors present in the body, and this was accompanied by a mild malt balance. It finished long and hopy, and left a lingering hop flavor to be enjoyed...and right on the end there was the presence of alcohol.
Mouthfeel/Drinkability: The alcohol at the end was kind of a surprise to me, and made this beer slightly less drinkable. I know that DIPA's are strong, but the alcohol really let that show. Overall it was very pleasant and the flavor balance in the body was really enjoyable, its just that the alcohol in the finish really creeps up on you.

Blue Dot on tap at Pony Bar, Hell's Kitchen, NYC.

Appearance: Served in their eight-ounce glass, the Dot comes looking like a wheat beer/Hefe- hazy yellow, mashed banana, hospital urine sample. Quite strange for a DIPA! Perfect one-finger head, very white and sort of Belgian. Good retention and lacing. Medium carbonation.

Smell: Grass, lemon, medicinal aromas, spice. Rosemary/dried herbs, fields of Provence . Sage, tarragon. A bit of soap.

Taste: Not as enticing as smell, but nice. Lemon juice, grassy bitterness. Meyer lemon, cough medicine. Astringent. Lemonade stand in the Midwest.

Mouthfeel: A bit too lemony/bitter, but tasty. Sour touch. Medium carbonation and flavor, medium-to-full body. Unbalanced but tasty!

Overall: I want more. So drinkable and different! Refreshing, enticing. Hardly a DIPA in my book, more like a mixture of Wheat and IPA, but super yummy nevertheless.

22oz bottle
Spring 2008 release

A- Pours a slightly hazy golden orange color with an off-white head.

- The aroma is a good amount of sweet malt and a lot of citrusy hops as well. This is a very nice West Coast IPA aroma.

T- The taste much like the aroma has a pretty solid malt backbone that helps balance out all the hops. Not overly hoppy, but certainly enough hops present to fill my craving. I am also really enjoying the balance.

M- Medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

D- I think this is a borderline IPA/DIPA in that it is lower in alcohol like an IPA, but is a little more balanced like a DIPA. Very enjoyable.

Overall, this is my second HOTD brew and I am impressed again. This is a solid IPA/DIPA that is definitely worth a try. Recommended.

Been meaning to try this for quite some time.

Appearance - Pours a hazy golden color into my SA perfect pint. About a finger of nice head is achieved with a moderate pour.

Smell - Pine, hops, citrus, bitterness, slight malt backbone. Slight floral.

Taste - Similar to the nose. Not to be rude, but nothing that really stands out. Seems like a standard, run of the mill DIPA to me.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

Drinkability - Relatively so, but again, for how much this beer costs I took my time, haha. Almost eight dollars for a bomber of this and honestly did not impress me. Glad I tried it once, will get other IPA/DIPA's in the future.

Pours a dirty orange colour, translucent at best with interesting dance of bubbles when first poured. Head is off-white and struggling to live - just a thin film of decent lace, pathetically tried to be kept alive by slow bead. Looks alright for an IPA, but like a lot of the life's been squeezed out of it.

What was that about lacking life force? No sign of that on the nose. Big cascade hop aroma, full of lemon, grapefruit and kiwi. Solid toffeed malt base provides great support, like there is some amusing ascerbic notes, piney and almost minerally over the top. Fresh, vibrant and pleasant.

Hops are all over this from the get-go. Tangy citrus with a mild metallic bent has an early climax like Andy Samberg in a nightclub, with slight acid, pine wood and trailling off in a bitter citric and resinous finish, with a hint of sherbet tartar and maybe some lavender notes. A bit contortingly bitter early, on the mid-palate where the alpha acids really take hold, but it's all well mellowed and balanced out by the finish. The bitterness, while definitely there, is more of a flavour than a philosophy lecture, and quite capable of being enjoyed.

Fair body, but could use more stickiness for a DIPA. Bit of pull from the hops and slight carb texture. Not bad.

A pleasant IPA but certainly not as big and brash as other beers that call themselves doubles. That's a good thing of course, but it really could have been a lot bigger and more awe-inspiring.

22oz. brown bomber with silk-screened label and a vintage of Fall 2008. It pours a deep hazelnut-gold with a green tint when held to light. A white foamy 1/2" head comes and goes quickly, leaving some sticky lace behind.

Pop the cap and a pine forest jumps to the nose...sweet and sappy. Besides the pine is a sweet navel orange scent blending in quite nicely and a faint peachy mango as well. Definetly smells like a hop bomb.

Some pale malt sweetness and a nice bitter-sweet hoppiness thats full of white grapefruit, mandarin orange, peach, mango and lots of pine. A very refreshing flavor with a balance that's just right...sweet into bitter and finishes clean as a whistle. Really well done DIPA, West coast style...indeed. Nice carbonation, alcohol is burried somewhere, medium body and ultra refreshing. An easy drinker that would please just about any hophead in a heartbeat.

I really enjoy HOTD brews and this ale is a fine example as too why I do...cheers!

Tasted and reviewed again February 2011 - Winter 2011 bottling. Former high rating from 2009 tasting must be revised. Review of Winter 2011 follows:

Tried again Winter 2011 Batch. Pours a hazy orange amber with medium size white head.

Pine, desert cactus nose, none of the brighter fruity character or pineapple character/citrus character noted in earlier batches.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and balanced.

Flavors are all dull pine with a pine bitter "dull" character. No bright character at all.

Big simple pine bitter finish.

Newest batch a bit of a disappointment here, especially when compared with earlier bottlings.

* * *

Review from 2009: Pours an orange amber with a thick white head.

Bright, lightly sweet citrus, grapefruit and pine nose; layers and nice.

Mouthfeel is full and bright with just the right amount of carbonation.

Flavors follow nose. Nice hoppy IPA. Bright, clean and bold citrus, grapefruit flavors with a light hint of oranges and then goes quickly to a strong bitter grapefruit and pine resin.

Medium pine/grapefruit finish.

A very nice drink.

Batch: Summer 2011

A: pours a hazy, dusky apricot colored ale with no head, no evidence of carbonation. No lacing.

S: Juicy, like cotton candy and juicy fruit gum. I'm not certain I need to add more to this; that is an awesome smell. Feminine and sweet.

T: Sweet, citrus, bubble gum, peaches, alcohol. The bitterness is really sharp, and frankly, just a hint too high IMO. Finish is a citric resonance (oranges) with some resiny hops.

M: Medium body with low to moderate carb. Semi-dry finish.

O: Good IIPA, wish the bitterness was toned just a hare to better balance out the beer. The appearance has much to desire, but otherwise, most categories hit the mark quite well.

Thanks to Solomon420 for this bomber.

Uh oh...that was my first thought when I poured this one. Looks like unfiltered apple juice. Thin head appears then quickly disappears. Very little lacing. I must admit I was worried.

The aroma was a good sign, though. Filled with grapefruit hops and not much else. Sure, there is a bit of malt waaay in the background, but this is a DIPA and it is not scared to let you know it.

The flavor matches the aroma. Full of citrus hops but with more of a malt presence. Not as bitter as I expected it to be, yet it still fulfilled my hop head needs. Piney bitterness at the finish gives it a nice zip.

Mouthfeel is silky smooth. Light carbonation. Almost seems as if this one was hand pulled straight out of the barrel...not poured from the bottle. Lower abv for a DIPA means the alcohol isn't noticed at all. This is one good beer. I could have easily drank another bomber or two if I had them available. Thanks, Damian!

A- A cloud of golden amber, two fingers of head, with some great lacing.

S- Some citrus and piney hops, smells like it going to be heavy.

T- slight citrus in the begining, then a hop bit, with a dry piney aftertaste. Alchol is light but present.

M- Med/ tight carbonation. Kinda light for the style.

D- Very drinkable.
