Notes: You may remember that the biblical Eve came out of Adam's rib, and this "Eve" was no different. A version of Adam, "accidentally" frozen one winter making an ice-bock. Eve was an exceedingly strong version of Adam produced by this accident. The pour is very flat, but the nose is absolutely huge. It's rich and sweet in the mouth with a slight tang from the hops and the very high alcohol in the aftertaste. This elixir was never commercially available, but we happen have a case in the back room. 60 IBU. ABV - you have to have a designated driver to even order this one.

The beer appears virtually still and is dark brown in color. The aroma brings molasses, a touch of soy sauce, though certainly not off putting. Additional notes of leather, maple. The flavor brings more spice than the aroma indicated. A bit of pepper with moderate booze. Void of carbonation and really smooth in the palate. A once in a lifetime experience and certainly an enjoyable experience pairing this with Dave.

No head whatsoever. Dark amber/copper color. Fairly cloudy and a little syrupy. Aroma has some dark fruits and very intense. Some oxidation. Prune, brown sugar, and alcohol. Flavor is a little bitter, leather, and wood. Still some dark fruits. Mouth is probably one of the most full I have experienced. Almost no carb. Nothing great about it, but crazy all around.

Pours a darker brown color, pretty much flat, some bubbles here and there. Nose is sweet burnt sugars, oxidization from the age, caramel, tobacco, and dates. Flavor is dark fruit, oak, tobacco, earth, and toffee. Ultra-smooth booze for 12%. Medium body, light carbonation, rich creamy finish.

For 16 years old, it's held up surprisingly well. The oxidization is there, but doesn't impair the sweetness and smooth booze that makes up most of this beer. Good stuff from HotD and a really nice vintage gem.

A - Super dark brown transparent body. No foam, lace, collar, etc.

S - If you took the Kuhnhenn Extraneous Cassis and removed the fruit, I imagine this is how it would smell. Lots of milled grains, leather, a bit of sherry-like oxidation, and some nebulous dark fruits.

T - The taste is fairly similar, but with a dark chocolate bitterness late on the palate. The milled and roasted grains dominate, with some nice complimentary dark fruit and caramel sweetness and perhaps a touch of umami. Somewhat understated, but largely devoid of bad oxidation flavors.

M - Fairly smooth texture, very low carbonation, medium-full body, and minimal alcohol warmth. Pretty much what you'd want from the style.

D - Pretty enjoyable for a 16-year old beer, but another beer that was probably better a decade ago. Like the Merlot Leviathan, it just seemed mellow rather than stale. Cool to try, but not worth a king's ransom.

A: Pours still. The color is dark brown with a dark red tinge.

S: Cocoa and soy sauce with leather and sherry. Certainly oxidized but there's no cardboard. Dark fruits are redolent of plum and raisin. Faint roasted presence.

T: Soy, chocolate, and leather with plum and sherry. There's some date with a low earthy bitterness. It's held up pretty well for being 18 years old. There's a subtle roasted quality with brown sugar and a touch of vanilla.

M: Full body with no carbonation. Silky, sticky, and smooth with much warming.

Overall: Like I said earlier, this has held up well considering its age. Very complex and pretty oxidized but still quite pleasant. Definitely worth trying if you have the opportunity.

Pour is a clear dark wine like red with no head. The nose is different, some sweet notes of berry, lightly oxidized, notes of chocolate, strange soy sauce. The taste is rough, salty, chocolate, boozy, vanilla, and a large amount of soy sauce. The Adam characteristics may be there, the body is lightly creamy with low carbonation if any.

My boy GoGriz hooked up this super rare tick. You heard right...GoGriz

Dark mahogany pour. Fairly still in the glass.

Sweet caramel malt, dark chocolate, a little smoke and booze on the nose.

A bit of oxidation as it warms. Leathery and sweet. Caramelized malt flavor, chocolate, noticeable teriyaki sauce flavor and heat on the back end. Not too overpowering but warming. Still very drinkable.

Thanks to Steve for this one. A rarity that I never thought I'd come across. Kind of like Dave-lite here. Unlabeled 12oz. bottle poured into a Hill Farmstead tulip.

Beer is sludgy and opaque brown. Great legs but no head or lacing. Looks like murky swamp water.

Nose is caramel, brown sugar, cocoa, toffee, and some sdweet soy sauce. Very sugary. Aromatic and robust with deep, full flavors. Incredible rich.

Very sweet. Caramel, brown sugar, and a sweet, hop creaminess. Sweet soy sauce towards the middle mixed with toffee and more caramel. Finish is slightly grainy brown sugar. Aftertaste of toffee. A bit oxidized as its cardboard-y towards the end. But still, the complexity is there and like the aroma, very rich.

Medium to full bodied with very low carbonation. Filmy, viscous and heavy in the mouth and rich and thick going down. Finishes deep with a filmy aftertaste. Appropriate for the style.

This is still a very solid beer but I feel as if its been on the downhill for a little while now. Still very rich and complex but the flavors are starting to muddle together a bit. Really glad to have had the chance to try this one.

12 ounce unlabeled bottle sold to Drake and I by Alan from our Hair of the Dog visit back in May, we have both been patiently waiting to open this one, cracked this around noon yesterday in my backyard, 1995 vintage, poured into my Rodenbach Alexander goblet, color is a deep dark mahogany with some dark reddish edges, barely any head at all but what was there was some big light tan bubbles, aroma consists of dark sweet malts that were slightly oxidized, sweet caramel, oak, toffee, raisins, prunes, cocoa nibs, brown sugar, smokiness, port, booze and candied sugar, flavor starts off with a big roasted malt flavor with some salty smoke lingering behind it, dark vinuous fruits and malts in the middle, rounded alcohol warmth in the finish, sweet malts and red wine like qualities come out in the next sip, bourbon and chewy oak in the next sip, unfrotunately a little soy sauce comes out towards the end once it fully warms, nice mix of dark chocolate and yogurt covered raisins, candied sugar and molasses make this even more complex, each sip is very different and has interesting qualities, this beer is more mellow than Dave but has a lot of the same qualities, being sixteen percent less alcohol make this easier to drink and have a good amount of it, very complex old ale, smoky, roasty, slightly boozy, malty, and sweet mouthfeel, medium to full bodied, low and body was pretty flat but still looked wonderful, taste lingers a very long time and is nice, could drink this bottle by myself quite easily, while it is a sipper there is not much alcohol present in the flavor, smooth and inviting, can be a tad syrupy once it warms but that is the only complaint as far as drinkability goes, not quite at the level Dave is but still a phenomenal beer, in short Adam freezes well after being able to have both of those now, crazy how good these beers age, truly unique brew that I will sadly not be able to have again, cannot recommend this one enough if you can get your hands on some

One of the highlights of the many new beers I tried during a week in Portland...but of course, it's not "new", it's actually the oldest beer I've ever tasted. As stated by msubulldog25 below, this was bottled in 1994. Although it probably hasn't aged as well as some other strong beers can and do, it was a real treat, especially after having been to the Hair of the Dog brewery the day before. Thanks to Brian G. for his endless generosity. This bottle wasn't cheap!

Poured into the glass a murky, dirty mess. Floaters, chunks, you name it...I half expected to see mud-worms writhing around in there. It's the color of deep dark prune juice, exhibiting not a single trace of lace. It might look a little dead, but it's very much alive. I've personally never minded sediment anyway...

Aroma is a delight, and here, just as with the flavor, it performs where it counts most. Notes of grape must, old moldy wood, port, raisin and vanilla extract, all mingled nicely.

Flavor-wise, you get a lot of what the aroma foreshadows, and adding black currants, plums, prunes, soy sauce and sherry. Extra marks for the insanely long coffee/chocolate finish, which rides out forever...

Mouthfeel is smooth, light, buttery...but with zero carbonation, it's perhaps not quite as enticing as it could be.

Incredible depth of flavor, Adam has survived the aging process well (and has apparently morphed into the other gender). Utterly smooth...would be perfect for a slow-sipping winter's night in front of a fire.

Following an excellent Tuesday afternoon tour and tasting at Hair of the Dog, brewer Alan Sprints sold us a 12 oz. bottle of the ever-so-rare Eve, a previously frozen and carefully aged version of the Old Ale 'Adambier', circa 1994. Alan informed me this would be technically still an 'Old Ale', though it has been altered/intensified by freezing, much like an eisbock.

Bottle and cap are unmarked, however I'm confident in the veracity of the contents, as I was handed the bottle by the brewer himself...$40/bottle = about $3/year of age. Or $3.33/oz...worth it? We'll see...

Split the bottle to 4 Millevertus tasting glasses with my wife and visiting friends, Metalmonk and mnwags, 3 Oct 2007.

A: Popped the cap with a slight hiss. Eve falls into the glass a murky, maple/mahogany brown, completely lacking any head or carbonation. Edges are tinged with ruby and amber, but otherwise this glass looks like it was filled from, well...a ditch? A mop bucket? Lots of suspended yeast funk in the glass...definitely NOT pretty...

S: I can smell our little 3 oz. pours from 2, maybe 3 feet away. Malty sweet, something syrupy and a bit vinous. Dark chocolate shavings, smooth bourbon, reduced caramel, coffee grounds. Something in there reminiscent of teriyaki and leathery beef jerky. Seriously complex, ever evolving.

T: The complexity of the aroma pales next to that of the taste. I made the comment: "I wonder what one of those people who are 'super-tasters' would get from this?"...seriously, they could write pages and pages... so for me, I got lots of ripe/dried fruit - plums, figs, raisins, dates. Fleeting notes of vanilla and cherries. Earthy peat. Again, that faintly smoky teriyaki jerky flavor. More coffee grounds (with a slightly gritty mouthfeel to boot) and a latent dark chocolate that lasts and lasts, along with some of the sugary dried fruit and toffee...multi-layered and completely satisfying.

M: High marks in this category for a finish that lasts and lasts...and lasts...could still pick up numerous flavors well over 30 minutes after the last sip. Eve starts quite mellow and soft, viscous like a smooth bourbon. Somewhat lifeless without carbonation (which probably prevented a '5' here), but that amazing lingering & coating mouthfeel showcases the depth.

D: Few beers I've had could be called 'savory', but Eve is definitely one of them. A wonderfully warm and rich sipper, perfect for this cool & rainy October evening. Not perfect 5's (per the previous reviews) in my book, but still a pleasure to try this rarity on this occasion. Worth the money we paid - ah sure, you only live once, right? Cheers to good friends and to my outstanding wife and to Hair of the Dog's Alan Sprints!

How about that. My first 5. It couldnt happen to a more worthy beer. All praise is due to Skyhand for sharing this wonder of a beer with me. I've met few in my life with her generosity. On to the beer!

The pour was a ruddy amber. Hints of scarlet shown though as the beer hit the light but for the most part the body approached opaque. Of course there was little head since this was nearly thirteen years old but the liquid still retained a bit of thick body which definitely impressed me. After a sip the legs trickled down the body pensively.

Nose is astoundingly complex. vanilla,a caramel behemouth, leather, strawberrytobacco, and minor chocolate. each of these flavors shows up as tastes and truly blows the mind.

In spite of the age the beer still has decent body, which in my estimation would have been perfect in this bottle's youth. This beer is amazing and no amount of thank you's can express how grateful I was and am to Skyhand for sharing. Not to mention the fact that JoshD shared a bottle of Kuhnhenn Cassis the same night (which was every bit as amazing as this beer was). A truly wonderous night of wonderful beer.
