Fred Flanders is our regular Fred fermented with a variety of yeast and bacteria including Brettanomyces, Lactobacillus and Pediococcus in American oak barrels for 3 years.

On-tap at the brewery. Poured into HotD tulip.

A- Pours murky reddish brown with a bubbly thin white head. Head dissipates quickly to leave a thin crown around the glass. Almost no lacing. Pretty standard appearance for the From the Wood beers.

S- Tart fruits, subtle sugars and a touch of vinegar. The aroma is surround by this sour acidity. The From the Wood aspect really leaves its mark on this beer. A nice oaky/wood aroma with strong vanilla and bourbon notes.

T- The tart fruit and acidic sourness hit the palate first. But the oaky bourbon and vanilla quickly come in to smooth it out. I do get a vinous quality from the taste. Not sure if it's just a cherry flavor or if some wine-like flavors pop out.

M- Full body with light carbonation. The alcohol is present. It starts boozy but finishes smooth. But still, I would not enjoy more than 1 or 2 because you'll be drunk on your ass.

O- Excellent beer. But HotD rarely misses IMO. The flanders part of this beer is not as pronounced as the fred from the wood part. But I think everything works in unison. Again, a must try from HotD.

"Fermented with a blend of special yeasts and bacteria, instead of the yeast I normally use to ferment Fred. This Beer is barrel aged for 30 months, in French and American oak."

appearance: served in an unbranded snifter - cloudy brown-amber body, dirty off-white film

smell: honey, booze, funky yeast, bourbon, wood

taste: truly bizarre stuff - an old ale at heart gutted and stuffed with funky yeast and bacteria - honey, funky farmhouse yeast, bourbon, oak, subtle tartness, liqeur, candied sugars. Really strange stuff - i'll try anything from HOTD

mouthfeel: smooth and strong, light tartness and a funky twist

overall: worth the shot - pretty innovative stuff

Cloudy red colour with a tiny head. As expected for a sour.

Big slightly tart cherry aroma with notes of port and Pedro Ximenez sherry. Fantastic fruitiness and great balance.

Stunning flavour with a mildly tart cherry edge being added to the oaky, vinous flavour of Port. This is a truly unique beer and a stunner. Simply great with the wonderul blending of the great flavours of a Flanders Red and the rich, lush character of a Barleywine.

Full bodied with moderately-low carbonation. Good.

A really fantastic beer with an interesting interplay of sweetness, fruit, oak and tartness. Brilliant.

On cask, this one is actually a blend of Fred Flanders and Michael. In the interest of keeping the listings clean, I'm adding my review here since this beer is clearly a work in progress.

Mildly hazy brownish red with a fantastic, dense, creamy head with excellent retention and lacing, this is a phenomenal Flemish red. The nose is great (better than Michael, which I had a couple of hours later), with a rich, fruity red wine sourness with an undercurrent of complex sweetness. Honey, brown sugar, a little bourbon are present, along with a refreshing red wine vinegar character. The palate opens mildly boozy with a blend of red wine sweetness and Michael's sourness amplified. Mild acetic acid, mild sourness, some barrel tannins and red wine are present. Medium-full in body, medium-light in carbonation, this beer finishes with red wine, acetic acid and a mild funk. Solid stuff.

Pours a burnt-orange brown color with a very thin, off-white head.

The aroma is of oaky vanilla, with bourbon and a very light acidity along with some fruit notes.
I develops a very nice leathery quality as it warms.

The taste is of more bourbon-oak with a smokey, leathery finish. There are only trace amounts of acidic tartness.

It has a medium body, with light carbonation.

Another wonderful beer from Hair of the Dog. I am very glad I had the chance to give this a try and is something I would definitely get again, given the opportunity.

A - Pours a dark carmel brown with a streaks of dark red throughout. A thin light tan head forms that quickly forms rings around the edges.

S - I didn't pick up a ton of strong scents here, but some nice oaky/woody scents, some old fruit, and some tartness.

T - Sweet old fruit, cherry, woody-oak, finishes with some yummy carmel favors.

D - Lower carbonation, pretty sweet.

O - I liked this, but I couldn't drink very much more due to the sweetness. However, very highly reccommended.

On-tap at HOTD Tasting Room good start to PIB weeknd 7.14.11.

3/4 finger faint tan head multitudinous streams of carbonation rising up sides of glass after initial pour, ended up disarming pretty quick, brownish amber with red highlights, minimal lacing, a bit of chill haze. Pretty funky nose, musty horse blanket, tobacco, not picking up much hops , a bit on the floral side . Taste is more fruity than regular Fred some cheryish/funky notes, mirroring the nose.

The Candi sugar ensures a bit of balance with the tart and sir notes, more tart than sour. Took on quite a bit of barrel notes, a bit of vanilla not much char. ABV well hidden, this has obviously been in the barrel a long time (three years) very smooth. Really drinkable and tasty. Funky Fred!

IMHO, Not sure ths classifies as an American Barleywine despite big initial hop bill, more of a Belgian Strong Golden Ale w/Brett-if that makes much sense.

Barrel Aged in American Oak - Golden Special Ale Fermented with Brett

Drank while on tap at the Stuffed Sandwich. Pours a slight amount of head atop a murky brown body. Not quite golden anymore, but plenty of carbonation as I tilt the glass, and it's a got a lot of the bubbly.

Aromas are incredibly intense, with a strength that goes through the nostrils and right into the sinuses (as a casual *whiff* demonstrates). Can't describe the individual components but overall it's very, very pleasant.

The palate has no idea which direction to head on this one. There is so much here it's not even funny. The funkiness of the red, with the brett, and the deep, dark fruits such as figs, branded cherry, oak, tannins from much going on here, so different, and so delicious. A gift that keeps on giving.

A thin mouthfeel, with some tingliness from the carbonation. Seemingly becomes medium-bodied as it warms, or at least as I swish it.

Overall, this is really funky good. Almost like drinking a barleywine with brett, with the sour flanders aspect coming through barely 'nil. I like it though, and would drink this again, though two in the same sitting would not be recommended.

A: poured a caramel brown with virtually no head and no lacing sticking to the glass.

S: vinegar oaky aromas with hints of acidic citrus, slight sweet malts, and funk wiith vanilla barrel charateristics.

T: smooth sweet vinegar oaky flavors up front that also showchase slight roastiness, funky barrel notes, little brett, and a hint od acidic citrus to load up the palate.

M: medium slick body with low amount of carbonation that had a sweet mild tart finish.

D: the style is labeled a barleywine but the name says flanders. In my opinion it leans more towards a well drinkable flanders. The beer was not too sweet or sour and was glad I got the chance to try this rare treat.

A: The pour is a burnt orange mixed with red color with minimal head on top.. Perhaps just a thin ring.

S: Quite a bit of oak on the nose, more than you might expect. Certainly a bit of vinegar and some malt as well.

T: There is an interesting flavor combination here. The Flanders/sour aspect is mostly acetic in nature and there is some tart citrus (grapefruit?) as well. Plenty of oak and a bit of vanilla, and a trace bitterness on the finish.

M: The body is medium with a low, smooth carbonation. Actually quite a nice mouthfeel.

D: Really easy to drink and one that I'm glad to have tried--especially as I'll likely never have a chance to try it again.

Half pint on tap at Stuffed Sandwich for barrel aged beer month, 6/2/2010.

Pours pink/red and surprisingly clear for something both sour and from a barrel. How ever the pressure is dialed down so there is no head and also very little lacing.

Aroma is of fresh oak, malt, malt, some vinegar, more malt, and a hint of roast/char. Also a little booze.

Flavor is why I'd like to name this beer Balsamic Fred from the Wood. The Fred from the Wood is evident with tons of fresh oak and sweet maltiness and some bitterness. There is a strangely good quality about Fred that I've always liked that I chock up to the yeast. Then theres some vinegar and faint hints of funk.

Mouthfeel is heavy, too heavy for Flemmish but acceptable (and enjoyable) for a barleywine. Drinkable at 8 oz but if I had to choose I'd go for the Adam from the Wood.
