An old classic that I know I had many years ago, but I'm revisiting it now. Not a traditional old ale, Adam does its own thing. Heavy on smoke and tobacco, this would go well in the parlor with a cigar back in the 19th century, if the whisky decanter ran dry. Firm hop character and oxidized notes, but this is in keeping with expectations; it has a different signature from dark beers that have simply gotten old and musty.

I was excited to try this different style of beer.

It struck me that it was like a Belgian dark beer in its plum flavor, but higher on booze, and had more hop bitterness than I anticipated. Also a touch of tobaccolike smokiness, though that was subtler. In the end, I would've just preferred a complex dark Belgian beer with similar plumminess--this one was interesting, but put me off with the bitter tang.

The color of the body is a dark woody brown topped with a creamy blanket dying to a thin tan ring leaving wavy lace.

Smell is roasty and chocolatey covered banana with mixed nuts, toasted bread and amaretto.

A medium to light carbonation introduces the palate to dry cocoa, a touch of smoke, leather and nuts. There's no heat, but it still comes off as quite strong, and brandy-esque.

Bottle, Batch 97:
Pours pretty dark, like a porter or stout. Head is huge, a beige to tan meringue atop the dark body. Sheets fall with each sip, leaving some remnants.

Nose has a musty wood dankness, leather, dehydrated raisins and dates. There’s an earthy spice, not really mole-like, but minorly reminiscent. Maybe the lightest hint of smoke.

Taste hits with the leather first, accented by the less-sweet-than-normal dark fruit. There’s a deep wet leave earthiness that reminds me of a bold iced tea, ramped up a couple degrees. There’s some burnt sugar notes, without any acrid char. Never really sweet, there’s not a huge bitterness that really drives this, either.

I slowly enjoyed this more as I drank it. A little different than most of the beers I’ve had. An earthy, lightly sweet malty robust tea beer. Might need to follow this guy into the woods.

Batch 94 bottle into wine glass. Great smokey notes, very smooth yet powerful enough to last hours.

Hue on this is pretty much opaque, nearly black, save for same deep brown around the edges. Khaki head reduces and leaves behind bits of sticky lace.

Smells deeply smoky, charred, malty, caramely, leathery. Leading into taste is charred wood, burnt caramel, cacao nibs, toffee, grass, earth, tobacco. Mellows out and bring some dry hops, pine, hazelnut, touches of vanilla. Black licorice and molasses, roasted coffee and caramel malt some stronger as this warms.

This brew has a ton of depth that especially comes alive as it warms. There is a strong smoky wood aspect to this that reminds me of the few Rauchbiers that I have tried, which isn't a bad thing. Tons of layers going on here. I've had Old Ales and this one is something else, really. Was a little skeptical but was blown away by this. An amazing brew dedicated to a friend and fellow Brewer; fitting.

This is a very unique beer and really delicious. Trying to pigeon hole the flavor is very challenging.
Reminded me of a scotch ale, but stronger and a little more complex. A Wee Heavier?

What is this? Batch #95.

This one was poured out of the bottle at Brouwer's Cafe in Seattle, WA. It pours a dark brown- very dark brown, with a small head, and a surprisingly good amount of lacing. This looks improbably carbonated for this brewery.

This smells like old tobacco, leather, dark stale fruit, oxidation, rye bread and pumpernickel.

I can't figure this beer out at all. It's got a stale funky fruit flavor, with tobacco and rye, a bit of dark bread like pumpernickel, with raisin and old grapes. This is so weird but strangely enjoyable.

This is medium bodied, with a rich bready mouthfeel.

I can't even begin to figure this bizarre beer out. It's nice though.

On tap at Hair of the Dog Brewery and Tasting Room, served in a 12 oz tulip. Deep, dark brown with a nicely frothy head of tan foam and clumpy lace. Layers of deep, complex malt throughout the nose and taste: burnt caramel, roasted grains, molasses, bitter chocolate and dark fruit (figs, dates). Well hopped for an earthy, tobacco balance and balancing bitterness. Alcohol peaks through with a bit of heat. Medium to fuller body and good carbonation. A great big beer with terrific malty depth.
