What is this? Batch #95.

This one was poured out of the bottle at Brouwer's Cafe in Seattle, WA. It pours a dark brown- very dark brown, with a small head, and a surprisingly good amount of lacing. This looks improbably carbonated for this brewery.

This smells like old tobacco, leather, dark stale fruit, oxidation, rye bread and pumpernickel.

I can't figure this beer out at all. It's got a stale funky fruit flavor, with tobacco and rye, a bit of dark bread like pumpernickel, with raisin and old grapes. This is so weird but strangely enjoyable.

This is medium bodied, with a rich bready mouthfeel.

I can't even begin to figure this bizarre beer out. It's nice though.

Pours a caramel color. Aroma is complex aroma is super complex. Dark fruit, rich malts. Flavor is so old school complex flavor. I can't even describe it. Overall a really good beer.

On tap at Hair of the Dog Brewery and Tasting Room, served in a 12 oz tulip. Deep, dark brown with a nicely frothy head of tan foam and clumpy lace. Layers of deep, complex malt throughout the nose and taste: burnt caramel, roasted grains, molasses, bitter chocolate and dark fruit (figs, dates). Well hopped for an earthy, tobacco balance and balancing bitterness. Alcohol peaks through with a bit of heat. Medium to fuller body and good carbonation. A great big beer with terrific malty depth.

12oz bottle, batch 96 poured into a pint glass
A: Dark brown with no head
S: Molasses, prune, cocoa, fig
T: Fig, tobacco, molasses, bourbon
M: Full-bodied, a bit sweet/sticky but not boozy
O: Clearly well-made, I feel like a bit of time in the bottle would balance out the sweetness and I hope to try another with some age

I poured this into a snifter. The appearance is a nice dark brown color perhaps close to black. The head is a good two and a half fingers of white foaminess. There is a decent amount of adequate foamy lacing spider webbing all over the place. The smell has a hearty roasty meatiness up front with a decent sweet sticky chocolate coming in behind. The taste was fairly balanced between the meatiness and the chocolate. The aftertaste is somewhat a good balance between the meatiness and the chocolate. The finish is quick and dry. On the palate, it sits about a medium with not too much of any sessionability about this. I’m finding this one to be more of a sipper. Do I feel the ABV? Perhaps. The carbonation is exceptionally smooth, whoah, wow, very smooth. Overall, ok, this is a wonderful representation of the Old Ale style, big wow from me. Though very different from my all time favorite of this style, I still like this one a lot and would definitely have it again. So glad I finally had the opportunity to try it.

Deep cola color - almost black - with a thin lacing. Aroma does have some huskier malt smells, and maybe even a little earthy hop, but there is an astringent alcohol ester that is pretty harsh & unwelcoming.

Taste is a little bit smoother - lots of dark fig upfront, heavy caramel malt - but that ester really brings out a leathery tannin flavor that just does not work for me. It is very fusel, and bullies the other flavors. I get this a lot of HotD beers so I guess they just aren't for me.

Pours with very little carbonation, almost still. Feels that way on the palate too, which is a bit of a turnoff.

Tastes a bit old and muddled at first, with some minerality raising an eyebrow. As the beer warms and settles, a richer array of flavors come forward - prunes, dates, currants, caramel, a slightly bitter, tannic finish. Some umami and plum/berry fruit combine for a nice combo. Again, there's a chalky, mineralic note. Heavy on the palate, but finishes relatively dry. Still, I'm wishing for more carbonation.

Overall, one of the more interesting old ales I've had. Although I think it could use more time in the bottle both from a flavor and carbonation development perspective.

Aroma has leather, dark fruit, tobacco, oak, dampness, and a hint of chocolate. Thick brown with minimal head. Taste has spice, plum, leather, tobacco, cocoa, wood, vanilla, bourbon, and soy sauce. Minimal carbonation. A very intense, very unique beer.

Batch 92.
Pours from the bottle a dark brown with a never-ending dark tan head. Strong carbonation and tons of lace.
Amazing aroma: chocolate, molasses, caramel, toffee, brown sugar and hints of hazelnut.
Dark chocolate leads the taste with dark fruit, molasses and some bitter char notes. As it warms a bit, I get vanilla, leather and a touch of smoke.
Mouthfeel is very smooth and creamy.
A very nice experience.

12 FLUID OUNCE bottle
Served in a snifter
Batch 92

This beer pours black in color and is topped with several inches of tan head that leaves some nice lacing.

I smell milk chocolate with a hint of smoke.

The taste begins with milk chocolate. Through the middle I get some earthy flavors and some more familiar old ale flavors in the finish.

Medium to full mouthfeel

This is different from all the other old ales that I have tried. This one is more like a stout with the color, flavor, and aroma. It is pretty good.

Very dark appearance. Very little aroma tobacco? Almost no head or carbonation. Taste is a little fruity but bitter and the bitterness increases toward the end. I did not notice any alcohol taste.
