The wife and I stopped at Hair of the Dog on a bright, sunny Sunday morning in January. Winters in Portland sure are nicer than in New York City! A beautifully renovated industrial space, sort of like a massive loft. Airy and sun-filled, and pretty empty to boot. I like the atmosphere and would hang out here often if I lived in Portland.

Outrageous beers on tap, including Doggie Claws '09 and '13, Adam, Little Dog, Greg, Fred and a special "Brandy Barrel Fred with Strawberry". The selection of bottles is to die for: Fred from the Wood, Bourbon Fred, Michael, Otto, Collage, Matt, Cherry Adam, Adam from the Wood 2011 (this one cost me twenty bucks but was rather delicious). Some bottles to go: Otto, Adam, Fred.

Basic food, we just had a simple plate of bread and butter. Service was rather sad. So bad that my wife and I had to laugh. The bartender was either annoyed or rude or hangover or all of the above, but he sure was not nice. His face made it clear that he was not happy to serve me, and he bitched my wife out for using the little tasting glasses as cups for her non-toxic painting water. It was ludicrous.

Shit is pricey here, but so worth. The beers are truly unique and incredible, and the space is so nice and comfy. I'll forget the bad service and can't wait to go back!

Visited on a Sunday just before noon. I had flown in from DC to meet a friend. We drove to HOTD directly from the airport. We sat at the bar.

V - Definitely a beer vibe. Bright, open, clean. An nice bar with tables both inside and out. 4

Q - Great glassware. All of it clean. Beer at the brewery does not get any better. 4.5

Ser - Above average, but the bartender was a bit surly. Frankly not too helpful either. Sort of had an expectation that I should know everything there is to know about the place, etc. 3.25

Sel - Besides having great beer, HOTD has a good selection of styles available as well. So even though there were no guess taps, there was plenty of choices for any beer drinker. They also have wine, but of course some of their beer has very vinous qualities to begin with. 4.5

Located in an alright area of Portland, HoTD offers a very cool space converted from a garage. The entire brewery is open space. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable during my visit and really helped better appreciate some of the special brews available on tap. The food was a very pleasant surprise. Definitely worth a visit.

Located in an industrial district, the brewery fits in nicely and doesn't do anything pretentious, yet it has a great selection of current and vintage offerings, good food and very hospitable to kids.

walking here and finally arriving felt like a great lifelong dream had been realized, a pilgrimage completed. the beer and vibes inside did not disappoint! wow! cool place, tiny system, wrap around bar, some outside seating, avant garde art on the walls, and a beer list to rival any i have ever seen. one of the original makers of these elite level strong ales, it was great to finally get to drink all these famous beers. place was really hopping, but the service was attentive and helpful, fun and knowledgeable, and really cool to chat to. i think she was the sister of a brewer or something, cool lady. in any event, all the beers were amazing. i loved the 2008 matt from the vintage list, otto, and fred from the stone, but all the beers were amazing. pretty cool they keep all these old bottles around, and they really arent that expensive for what you get. cool glassware too. we had a meat and cheese board and it was filling and delicious and nicely curated, a perfect companion to a lot of these big interesting beers. i cant say enough about this place. it blows my mind how much they have been able to accomplish for themselves on such a little system. this is an absolutely must visit brewery, possibly my single favorite from my recent oregon trip. absolutely not to be missed.
