Decided to make a stop by Hair of the Dog during my winter vacation to Oregon and it was awesome!

Atmosphere: located in the industrial area of Portland, the neighborhood does not have much eye candy to offer. Yet, looks can be deceiving since this area has some amazing breweries hidding. Unlike the downtown area, parking is easy and the brewery is easy to spot. The inside is a basic warehouse with a bar and tables. Nothing over the top by def enjoyable.

Brews: Hair of the Dog offers awesome drinks. Most have a hoppy taste minus the trademark hoppy bitterness. If you like the malty sweetness, you will be very surprised by these brews. We ordered tasters of all brews available: Fred, Ruth, Adam, Blue Dot, and Doggie Claws.

Food: the food was awesome. We ordered a plate of pickled vegetables (we were told that they had been pickled by a local deli). I have never enjoyed myself so much over pickled anything before. We also order a delicious Brisquet. Probably one of the best Brisquets I have tried. To wrapped things up, we finished our meal with the Bread Pudding (the sauce was based with Doggie Claws beer). If you like Hair of the Dog Doggie Claws, you are going to love this Bread Pudding.

Service: the service was amazing. The bartender was witty, which a great knowledge over the beers. She was patient and talkative. What makes things better, we ended paying $24 for all the food and drinks we consumed. Nothing says great brewery more than a place that truly caters to the consumer.

If I have anything to be critical about this place, it would their operation hours. It is opened between 3pm to 8pm. If you can over look this minor oddity, then you have a great stop waiting for you.

They stole my idea for a NW BA Gathering but I am not going to hate..just never visit again.

A: Wife and I strolled in on a Sunday after FredFest, grabbed 2 seats at the bar and immediately felt very welcomed. Guy at the bar was very knowledgable and had been at FredFest the night before. Staff was in the know when it came to beer. Found out one of the worked at Lucky Baldwins and the other lived down from me in Santa Barabra. The mainserver knew her HotD for sure. Great atmosphere!

Q: It is HoTD. To me nothing in the NW touches it. All beers I ahd were phenom!

S: Like I said, GRAND. Never waited for a beer and they were always on top of it with a great attitude. They loved what they do!

S: Holy shart man. All of the HoTD staples and a bottle list for drink on premises only that would make any beer nerd have a wet dream. I had a 09 Matt, 09 Cherry Adam and 07 Fred from Wood. Took home growler of Blue Dot.

F: Good!

Best of the best!

I visited Hair of the Dog recently on a vacation through the Pacific Northwest.

V: Another great spot in Portland. There was plenty of bar seating, with several indoor tables and a few outdoor tables.

Ser: I had great service during my visit. I was primarily interested in several of the vintage bottles for consumption and my server happily went through each selection with me offering her opinion and preferences for each. She didn't simply recommend the most expensive bottle every time and she was spot on with her analysis regarding the bottles I purchased.

Sel: There was a large selection of both their standard line up and a few limited releases on tap along with a good size vintage bottle list for onsite consumption.

Overall, a great spot in Portland that I think is starting to be taken for granted in the beer community. If you like old ales, you have to stop in at Hair of The Dog during any Portland visit.

Visited this place twice when I was in town for a few days. I am a big fan of HotD beers, so to enjoy them fresh from the tap and the verticals of the rare barrel aged versions available in bottles was a treat. The food is very good, approaching decent restaurant quality. They have a small kitchen with a chef preparing food to order. The beers are super. I was waited on by Wendy both times, who is very friendly and helpful. I had a great duck confit with greens and the next day a beet salad with greens and goat cheese. The only limitation is that they just serve HotD beers, but that was not a problem for me. Enjoyed an '08 and a '11 cherry Adam from the wood. The vintage bottles can get quite pricy.

I go here regularly because there are few other places where the quality of the beer, food and service are all world class. Atmosphere is very cool and unique.

Beer: The regular taps are great, always 1 barrel aged beer available for a $9 glass. Adam, Fred are always available and they're always putting new experimental stuff on tap as well. The vintage menu is where it's really at! 2013 Matt is the best $18 you can spend in Portland on beer. 2002 Fred is amazing as well. If you're feeling very adventurous you can drop $50 on a 1994 Adam.

Food: Beef brisket. It's unreal and it will go great with a dark beer like Adam. The pastrami sandwich is another favorite.

Service: I've heard complaints from others on the service here but I tend to get the same couple servers who recognize my face and are incredibly friendly.

Been here only twice and wish I lived close. The beer speaks for itself in the consistently high ratings. The food is on par with a lot of options, and very good quality. Then you have the vintage beer menu, come on, you're killing me! I want all of them! Not unless you want to be carried out, you must choose only a couple, there will be more, again. Great merch, quality service, nice atmosphere.A must visit.update: last visit was able to buy a case of Cherry Adam from the Wood, and 2 giant bottles of Otto; have shared with many friends back in Illinois, and they can't get enough, awesome beer!

Hair of the Dog does make some really good beer. Many people that are on BA know about their hard to find stuff and those of us who are able to hit the place up know how good we have it especially with special events and or great releases from the wood. The place itself is a typical large bar/brewery.

A really great thing about Hair of the Dog is that you can order from their "vintage" selection. That list contains beer they have had aging for years and even the recent releases that have sold out. I've ordered a lot of beers on that list over the years, however if you do order from it you have to drink it there. They do let you keep the bottle if you like though!

Of course the best thing about Hair of the Dog is the beer. They usually have Fred, Adam, Ruth, Lila, and a "special" beer such as Doggie Claws, Will, or other beers that are made in smaller batches than say the regular beers. On top of that they offer barrel aged beers which is their from the wood series. Usually it's just one at a time but most of them are top notch. Beers like Matt, Otto, Adam from the Wood, Bourbon Fred, Maple Fred, the list goes on. These beers are more expensive but usually well worth it.

On top of the draft selection and the rotating "from the wood" selection and the "rare" bottles you can also pick up bottles to go. Usually it's their regular stuff however they do release limited stuff for the current year. Also you can pick up swag as well. Now if you are hungry they do have a decent selection of food to order. I've had their mac and cheese and I was impressed. It wasn't the best I've had but it was pretty good. Their deserts are really good as well. I've enjoyed a lot of the bread puddings I have ordered that's for sure.

So in closing if I was to tell someone hitting Portland for the first time I'd tell them Hair of the Dog would be my top 4 places to hit up. I love the beer at this place and if your lucky you'll be able to get something really special on the rotating "from the wood".
