500 ml can served cold into a pint glass. Purchased for about $2.15 from the local LCBO. I do believe this is my first beer from Croatia. It also happens to be my 1,000th unique beer, however, not my 1,000th review. Saving something more special for that,

Appearance - Crystal clear, pale golden straw color. Small weak half finger of head is poured with modest retention. Some lively bubbles of varying sizes.

Smell - Clean and fairly grain with a subtle sweetness that is too much for a Czech pilsner. Light grassy notes are relatively hidden. Some starnge malty sweetness in here too.

Taste - Fairly clean, lacking the hop bite of the best pilsners. Drinks more like a Euro pale Lager. Some graininess.

Mouthfeel - Expressive but moderate carbonation. light body. Easy to drink.

Overall - A decent beer that won't blow anyone away. Better than some pale lagers but doesn't hold a candle to the best pilsners.

Pours a clear, gold colour. Smells like lager/pilsner yeast, light pale malts, crisp, and clean. Tags a bit heavier than it smells, but light overall, pale malts, basic lager/pilsner flavours and bitterness; not much to it, but it's crisp and refreshing, perfect for the Croatian heat!

Poured mine into a lager mug. Pours a nice pale golden yellow color, with a thin foam head that sits.

Smells skunky with a watery smell, similar to a Euro Pale Lager.

Tastes like an average Euro Pale Lager, with water. Wouldn't say it's watery but the flavor is on the weak side.

Feels thin, almost watery, low carbonation. Easy to drink but not much to it. Besides its color.

Overall this is my second Czech Pilsner in two days and this one doesn't taste anything like the other, it's a Euro Pale Lager.

Pours a clear golden color with white head. Cereal grains on the nose; follows onto the palate. Light bodied. Finishes with much of the same, simple lager, yet crisp and clean. Not bad at all.

Probably one of the worst beers you can find in Europe. It reminds me more of a cider than a beer. Very watery with absolutely no depth of flavour. The scent is very sweet, again, like a cider. This might be great while lounging on a beach in split but it does not work anywhere else.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a light to medium golden amber with a fizzy half finger white head that dissipates quickly to patches with little lacing. Massive skunking on opening the bottle. Aroma of sweet bready malt, light grassy hops, skunk. Flavor is sweet bready malt with some light biscuit, light grassy hops, finishes drier with a lingering mildly astringent hop bitterness. Light bodied with active carbonation. One of the most skunked beers I've ever had, so trying to evaluate the base beer underneath. The initial taste is pleasant light bready malt with a little graininess and biscuit, but not strong enough to support what's left of the hops which seem to be just bitter with little herbal nature. Skunky and fizzy, there does seem to be a light, pleasant pilsener in there somewhere. Meh. As my first Croatian beer, I hoped it would a better introduction.

Crystal clear golden color with a thin cap that remains throughout the beer. Earthy and floral hops in the nose with a distinguishable cracker like malt aroma. Grassiness comes through in the taste and a well balanced pleasant bitterness throughout. Medium bodied with a nice roundness and moderate carbonation.

Mentor Family Foods (I call it "family feud") is a little independent grocery near here that always has some oddball Croatian food and beverages hidden here and there. I went a lookin and I turned up this.

It looks nice in the glass. A deep golden with fair head that subsides quickly. Biggish bubbles. The aroma is a nice finishing hops smell.

The taste is a balanced, slightly hoppy beer taste. It's dry and very authentic tasting. This is a very easy drinking beer that does not insult your palate. One could drink a few of these. It's not very expensive, so this is a nice novelty - an authentic old world beer from halfway around the globe.

A: Brilliant straw to gold with a 1” persistent dense white foam collar.
S: Perfumey, herbal nose with a light grain background.
T: Light pilsner malt flavors with a light bitter accent.
F: Crisp, light and smooth.
O: An easy to drink fairly typical Euro-lager with less character than many.

Pours a light golden color color with a nice head. Smells sweet and floral like. Taste is just like it smells except with a slight bitterness and goes down pretty smooth. Overall one off the best Czech Pilsener I've had.

Format: a standard 330mL green bottle with a standard macro label.

Appearance: pours out a solid amber colour with light carbonation across the profile. A fluffy white head drops down to a thin cap.

Aroma: light grains with some grass hops. Nothing special.

Taste: the grains again with a light bread malt. The hops are pretty much unnoticeable.

Aftertaste: slight hops and those bread malts lingering through. Ho-hum.

Mouth feel: medium in feel with a moderate to higher carbonation. Reasonable.

Overall: an okay pilsener but certainly not the best I have ever had. I'll definitely take another option for the AU$52 a case mark.

Review: Can of Karlovacko Pivo Beer, 5.2% ABV

My first Croatian beer The aroma was a good grain scent with some malt sweetness, nice. A nice thick, foamy, white head appeared after the pour, that stuck around. A bit of lacing noted.

The colour was a bright clear golden straw appearance. Had a bitter taste, and I felt it was a strong beer. No doubt a few of these under my belt and I would be ready for a good party.

A good clean Pale Lager, with a nice decent aroma.

A mild tasting, low body, clear looking and clean pilsner. Some bready characteristics and light hops flavor. Not ordinarily something that I would have on a regular basis. However, being that I was at a European style tavern run by and patronized by people from various parts of the former Yugoslavia, the mood was perfect. Furthermore, the spicy sausage I ate with it was the perfect counterpoint.

Clear dark golden body and a thin soapy white head that leaves some lace.

Herbal and grassy hop with some biscuit malt.

Light hop notes with the bigger malty/grainy contribution. Not the best of flavors.

Light bodied with some nice little scrubby carbonation.

Decent enough beer.

Light golden, with the typical thin head.
Grainy nose, like a first pressing of grain.
Taste of apples. First mouthful sifts into a bitter afterbite that is the primary reason I don't like pilseners to begin with.
Second mouthful, not so bad. Maybe I should have cleansed better beforehand.

Same thin, limpid pilsener feel in the mouth. Nothing much happening.
Not bad for a pilsener, but I probably should have tried it in on a sunny May or June afternoon, instead of a rainy October evening.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pilsner glass. Had a golden yellow color and a clear texture. There was a big, creamy, fairly long-lasting head. Good lacing.

S: A strong skunky quality is apparent the second you open the bottle, but there are traces of hops and malt mixed in. An uneven smell.

T: Tasted of light hops, light malt and the aforementioned skunkiness. Pilsner flavors typically aren't overly complex, but this one doesn't reach the heights of the best of the style. It isn't hops forward enough, nor does it have a strong citrus presence. Not awful, but could have been better.

M: A decent amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This is a pretty standard mass produced pilsner. It seems to be designed less to impress the drinker and more to sell.

Has a pleasant aroma that can't put my finger on as to what it is, but nothing I have experienced in another pilsner, or any other beer. Otherwise, the beer has the typical light body of a pilsner, along with a mild bitterness.

Pretty good beer if you're looking for something on the lighter side.

The nose does show some Saaz hop character, as well as a light doughy malt backdrop. It's all so slight, though, and could stand to be a little stronger. It falters even more on the palate, where the hops mostly show up as a clean bitterness. The malt becomes more toasty than it promised at first. They do get some things right, it's definitely a clean beer and nothing becomes annoying or cloying, but there is just a lack of complexity that ultimately dooms it to also-ran status. It's really only about toasty malt and lingering bitterness in the finish, and that gets too monotonous by the end of the bottle.

A nice soaring head of white crowned this beer after the pour. The color is a very pale golden straw color. That beautiful head doesn't stick, nor stay.

Smells like barley, corn, and Euro must. Has that Danish lager appeal, like Heineken. Perhaps, a little sweeter, but not offensively so. Lager grains, slight honey, and yeasty fruit.

Drinks a lot like the nose smells. Fruit rot, lagery grains, corn syrup, backend bitterness, and a generic sweet/stale carry-through. Has a note of light green apple and faint caraway. Some fusel and mintiness. The body has a decent shape, but it's not a game-changer. Carbonated averagely. Better than your average Euro Lager, but that's not saying too much. Especially, because it's listed as a Czech Pils.

Pale straw colour, big white head, foamy and unhealthy looking.
Skunk smell from a distance, bit of grain, low hops.
Sweet malts, grains, bit of corn and honey, but skunked and big metallic bitterness in the finish.
Light body, very fizzy.
Bad, a gas station lager.

I tried a beer from Croatia, Karlovačko. It was horrible, really. I'm not sure how it was possible to make a beer that was simultaneously too bitter AND too sweet. It was so bad I could only stand 3 sips before I donated to a local tree in the park.

Karlovačko has a very thick, foamy, white head, a clear, bubbly, golden-straw appearance, and some splotchy lacing left behind. The aroma is sweet, biscuit, barley malt and a touch of hop oil, and the flavor is the same, with pleasant, grassy hops to round it out. Mouthfeel is light and watery, and Karlovačko finishes crisp, clean, refreshing, and dry. Overall, this is a delicious beer. RJT

33cl Bottle: BBD 27 Mar 2014, poured into a Konig Pilsner stemmed tulip three times on 12th Feb 2014. Obtained from Ambrosetti in Berlin and drank at home.

Huge white head on a bright golden body, clear and clean looking on each pour.

I so wanted this to be wonderful, my first ever beer from Croatia: actually it wasn't too bad. Usual Pilsner/Lager aroma, meaning almost odourless, this had a few hints of a grainy sweetness to be fair, but not enough to get excited about.

The taste was leaning towards a malty sweetness, but again nothing huge or exciting. This was another European Pilsner/Lager than doesn't try to upset anyone and could have been one of many such beers from anywhere around the world.

Just above average in it's style and class: a country tick, no more and no less.
