Read about westmere as the place to go in the Albany area. Didn't disappoint, not much of a vibe just a typical upstate beer store, not much is refrigerated and the walk in cooler is full of BMC. However the crowler station was a great option with a wide variety and very reasonable prices. Pretty much everything just gets distributed to upstate NY can be found here. Staff was very helpful pointing me to some fresh NE IPAs I may have otherwise overlooked. Pipeworks Citra DIPA was just icing on the cake.

I actually was disappointed with Westmere. I expected it to be similar to their sister store, Olivers, but found it lacking. The place is a bit of a dump, was kinda dirty, and was picked over. I thought it was much more crowded than Olivers and had trouble finding some common east coast beers - like Dog Fish Head. Lots of 6 packs missing a beer - and a lot of empty holes. Not a bad experience, but - considering I would be coming from the Northway - prefer Olivers over this joint.

Great store with amazing selection and helpful staff. I always spend more time than planned browsing the aisles and looking at the recent arrivals. good job of keeping Facebook updated on the week's arrivals and kegs on growler station. Sometimes difficult to get rarer beers but they are fair about spreading the wealth using bottle limits.

Killer selection, helpful staff, and a nice variety on the taps. If you happen to be at Crossgates Mall, take the three minute drive to Westmere for some treats to bring home.

The sister store to Oliver's- part of the Brew Crew group of stores in Albany. The selection is very similar to Oliver's, but a few bottles missing at Westmere that were at Oliver's, with a few bottles missing at Oliver's that were at Westmere. Picked up some Pretty Things for the first time, haven't seen it on the shelf in Rochester yet. The place is kind of dirty, a bit grimy. A warehouse sort of feel to it, much like Oliver's. Friendly employees though, offered help even when I didn't need it.

I used to be a fan of Westmere Beverage. In fact, I did 95% of my beer shopping here. They have one of the best selections in the area and would generally let people know on facebook when special releases were coming out. But over time, prices have continued to creep higher and higher, making them consistently a more expensive option than many other local stores. On top of that, it seems that when they get special release beer, they stash half of it in the cellar to sell for 2x retail after it's been "aged" a year. They regularly try to sell "vintage" at a huge markup, even things that aren't that hard to find in the first place. The worst is the recent display of 2012 Parabola marked up to $50 a bottle. It seems like their new business model has become make as much profit as possible at our regular customers' expense. I used to really like coming here. But not anymore. I'm going to have to find a new regular store. Wouldn't recommend coming here unless you're desperate for a special release beer.

Helpful crew that knows their beer, J.T. & Drew were quite helpful. The selection was extensive and spanned the continents, plus the store had a cool vibe to it.

They put me hip to a cask of Flower Power that was dry hopped and offered as a special event later that day, so I returned on their recommendation.

Prices are fair and indicative of Albany area pricing because of the population: there are other beer stores off I-87 that are slightly less expensive with a similar selection, but Westmere is a great hang with some cool employees that appreciate good beer.

This is my go to shop. The guys there are always helpful with recommendations based on what you are looking for etc. They have made a lot of changes in the store over the last year since I started going there. Expanding their selections quite a bit. I have seen some rare beer coming through their doors, nothing unbelievable but I've been able to get quite of few of my wants there that are obviously within their distribution list. Westmere is probably the 2nd best shop in the Albany area, second only to their sister shop, Oliver's whose prices a little bit lower and a bit bigger selection. Overall, the shop is great.

Came here will the girls were shopping at Crossgates. Enter into the store with a wall of coolers to my left and some display of cases. The main area of the store is further back. Lots of stuff to choose from, the selection might be a bit less than Oliver's? Lots of dust on some things and the lighting made it a bit hard to read some of the freshness codes.

There is some old stuff here so be careful. I was welcomed when i came in but nobody came to see me in the near hour i was there.

Overall a worthy place but i think i'd rather go to Oliver's in the future.

Beer selection is great for the Albany area. Some beers were priced well like Sierra Nevada 30th anniversary for $5.99. The service was not on par with other beer stores in the area. I was the only one in there and asked for a sample of one of the beers on tap because I had my growler and was refused. The guy saying he wasn't allowed to give samples it was like I had asked for a pint or something seriously. I would rather take my business else were it's the simple things that separate beer stores. If you can't give some one a sample when they are about to spend $35 on a tap beer then forget it.

Excellent selection and great staff. People here really know their beer. Not a huge place, but they make great use of the space they have. It's obvious the owners of this place take great pride in beer culture and finding stuff that you don't see everywhere. A beer mecca in Albany.

Of course there are a lot of New York beers, but also a great selection of British and German beers that you don't see many places. Of course the Belgians are well represented. You can find some pretty good aged stuff on the shelves too. I picked up a sixer of Stoudts Belgian Triple that had 3 years of age, and it was great. Lots of good beer in the cooler too if you're impatient like I am.

Westmere is my store of choice in the Capital Region at this point. the staff is smart, informed, willing to talk to customers, and dedicated to craft beer being a showcase of what they do.

They have a really good approach to their Growler system. They have begun cellaring at the establishment which is a nice plus. They make good use of digital media to keep customers aware of what is happening with tastings, new arrivals, new kegs on tap.

Nearly impossible to leave empty handed. Check it out if you are in the area.

This has become my favorite beverage store in upstate new york. the store has an overall phenomenal selection with a ton of imports and a pretty wide selection of breweries. the one thing i love is that they have a ton of beers from the breweries they do have which makes it easy to try a breweries lineup. great growler selection but a bit pricey. the best deal they've got going is a deal where if you get a make your own six pack you get 5 dollars off of it. the staff is genuinely excited to talk beer and they love to help out and give recommendations. overall great store

This store is very close to Crossgate Mall and the interstate, so when I'm down there for shopping or passing through, this one is easy to stop at. From the outside, this place kind of looks shady and very small- wasn't too impress by the outside and almost didn't go in. However, once inside, they had a huge selection of beer. Not the cleanest place or the best organize (I know some wrote it was divided a certain way, but I couldn't tell), but they had a solid store and a nice growler set up as well as individual bottles you can buy.

Service was great as well. I probably had 2-3 people ask me if I needed help and there was always someone around- they didn't just offer help and then disappear behind the counter. The selection was great too. Some beers were slightly pricey, but some of them were worth it.

Great store. If you're in the area, you should stop by. I think next time I'll go to their sister store, but I was already at the mall. I did get some great beers and plan on going again.

Just realized I had never reviewed the sister store to Olivers.

To my knowledge Albany has two great beer stores, Olivers and Westmere.

Westmere may not have the same size of selection, don't know why I think this but Olivers seems to be a bigger store, but for all I know they could be the same size. However most people go to Olivers rather than Westmere.

There is an ever rotating list of growlers to go, every now and then Westmere will even age beer. For example recently they aged a keg of Ten FIDY for a year. Aged beer, on tap. Wonderful.

Although a small item, I really enjoy it, that they sell glassware. I've picked up a Chimay goblet among the other glasses I've gotten there. I love glassware and they sell it.

Singles are available.

Service though is exceptional. They frequently update their facebook page letting you know of recent arrivals. Every time you walk in someone asks you if you need help. However the best example I can give of great service is the following; I asked on their facebook page about DFH Hellhound coming in. A prompt response said that they are looking into it. Two days later another response saying they will be getting it and are all ready reserving me a bottle.

I love this store, now if only I could live there.

I make it a point to seek out good beer if I'm traveling.Yesterday,it was off to RPI.But I landed in Albany. And landed in the best beer store around. After calling from the airport,a fine young human GPS by the name of Matt assured me that I was within striking distance and guided me in.

I wandered around in stunned silence for awhile til he came up and said "are you the MN guy?" Guilty as charged. They have their beers divided by region, and there was quite a nice NY selection. He brought me various brands, asked me my favorite styles and hit the right medium between letting me wander and "hookin' a brutha up"

I'd just missed Nugget Nectar by a day,but they had frrrresh Flower Power from Ithaca. As much as I considered the St. Lawrence,Dogfish Head, etc. I kept coming back to Matt's recommendation. As I sit here typing this, with some of that IPA nearby,I'm glad I did.Rock solid, baby.

If you are in Albany, make this your bottle stop.Hopefully Matt will be there.Tell him Barry from MN sent you.It might get you a free coaster or Dum Dum sucker-ya never know....

Westmere is the best beer store in the Capital Region. They have a huge selection and work hard to obtain the hard to find high end beers. They also offer about eight fine beers of all styles on tap to fill your growler.

It's sister store, Oliver's, has a comparable selection, but Westmere also has a staff that has a full knowledge of and interest in beer. They get to know every customer who has an interest in beer and their preferences.

I have about 20 years experience searching for the best beer stores whereever I go around the country and beyond. Westmere is one of the very finest.

Easily accessible from highway 87, just minutes from the exit. Looks like a liquor store outside, but inside it's mostly dedicated to beer. Hundreds and hundreds to choose from, really exceptional and not what I was expecting in Albany.

The beer is laid out by region, Asian and European countries on the left of the store, American craft through the middle. Prices range from average to high, depending on the beer. I passed on a few I wanted only because the price was higher than I know I can find elsewhere in New York.

Definitely a must-stop in Albany, you can't beat the selection.

This has been my local shop for over 2 years now, live only about 5 minutes down the road from Westmere beverage. I typically stop in once a week to grab a quick bomber or growler and see what's new. The selection is very good with plenty of US microbews, plus they always keep expanding. Recently they just started carrying Mcneil's out of southern VT which is a great value at ~$5 a bomber. In addition to the bottle selection they have several taps in the back corner for growler fills. The folks that work there are very friendly and the beer manager does a good job of keeping is posted on special beers that come in. Would recommend Westmere beverage to anyone coming through Albany.

with a call to Oliver's, the extremely helpful gent working advised that not only was Westmere closer to 87 than it's sister location, but the selection was the same if only lesser in volume, and proceeded to give easy directions to the store

extremely fine selection of all manner of domestic and import bottles, but I was in search of the locals not really distributed out of the area, and relied on the advice of a store employee to assist in making my selections, options included Ithaca, Brown's, Cooperstown, and Keegan - and at least four others, there was also a Captain Lawrence bomber, and some widely available stuff like Southern Tier, missed out on the growler station

quality can probably vary, I haven't had issues with any of my bottles so far, but it was probably 85 degrees in-store, and there were some lightly dusted bottles sitting around

as mentioned the service at both locations was great

single prices ranged from 1.50 to about 2.50, with a $3 discount for mixing a full six

Went in to Westmere Beverage Center over the weekend. Located on Western Ave, near the Crossgates mall. They have about 5 or 6 beers on tap for growler fills that i believe rotate. Currently there is a great winter beer selection they have sectioned off at the stores front left side. A lot of coolers along the walls and a great warm beer singles, sixers and such sections in the middle of the store. It had a great selection of belgians, german and US beers that I went through. They offer mixed six packs at a discount and you can mix a six of the same brewery for the 6pack price which I thought was a plus. The staff is extrememly friendly and helpful and knowledgable. I walked out very happy with what I got. A plus is their selection of NY State beers that I havent been able to get a hold of in NJ. Definately a must if you are in the area.

Located on Western Avenue, some distance west of Crossgates Mall.

Upon entering the bulk of the craft beer is straight ahead and to the right. Most all regional brands are represented, as well as west coast and Canadian varieties. There was a good selection of beers from Quebec, Belgium and England.

Several mixed packs on sale. I picked up a mixed 12 pack from Cooperstown for 12 bucks.

The prices are in line with the region. While not as cavernous as Oliver's, certainly a bit more organized.

This midsized place is just a few miles east of downtown Albany and about 10 minutes down the road from Mahars. Looks like a typical macro based spot and when I visited everybody seemed to be carrying out a fresh 18 pack of Bud light. But fear not, there are tons of goodies to be had off of the steel shelving units to the rear, the coolers in the rear and from the about a half a dozen growler fill taps. Expect to find all the typically available in NY state good stuff, which I'm happy to say is alot. Watch out for your freshness/vintage datings, when available, cuz, I'm sad to say there was a bit more then a tad of dust on some of the stock. Friendly guys behind the counter is always a plus. If I was local this would be a regular stop.

I visited this place on 5/6/2009 just after visiting the sister store, Oliver's.

The outside of this place was deceiving. It looks very small from the street but is actuall fairly large inside. Parking was plentiful and the location was very easy to find.

Inside, this place waqs far neater and better organized than Oliver's. There was a shelf front and center when I wallked in displaying the new stuff recently received by the store from their distributor. To the right of that were two very long aisles with import and domestif craft beers sorted by country and brewery. There was also about 8 cooler doors in the back with a hodge-podge assortment of beers. I was able to find several Belgian ales that I cannot get at home and didn't see at Oliver's though. Overall though, I would say the capacity of this store is less than Oliver's and thus the selection was a tad smaller.

The guy working was extremely helpful and very knowlegable about beer. He even suggested to me that there was a $3 discount on mixed 6-packs and clued me in when I was about to grab a bottle from a smallish local brewery that according to him is not well thought of. Cheers to that type of advice I say!

Prices were very fair, but then again, most of what I bought I would not normally have access to unless via trades to the prices would always seem fair to me!

All in all, I had a really great experience going to this store. Definitely a "beer destination".

I as well have been going to westmere more than olivers as of late. They have cleaned up the store with a great import and craft area. The manager Jeremy is a beer geek and boast he has tried many different style of beer. He suggested to me that they have a special when you mix a six pack of different beers up they take $3.00 off that six pack. The staff seems knows there stuff and I have seen some of them at Mahars time to time (Good Sign). One of the last times I was in there, I asked them to put Stone Imperial into the cooler and they did. They do have some older beer in the store but just stay away from the dusty bottles. Good place to check out if you have the time to get out of albany to guilderland which is not to far.
