This my regular haunt for beer. I've been in many, many times. It has hands down the best selection of craft brew in the area. For a better selection I'd have to drive about a half an hour to the Royal Oak area.

They have a walk-in beer cooler that is fairly impressive and a roughly 15 foot wall of beer right next to that. They have beer from all over the country and international brews also. Though I'd say there is an emphasis on beers from Michigan. I've been able to pick up beers here that I thought I would have more trouble finding, like Stone's Vertical Epic 080808. Most of their beer is sold in 6 packs, but they do offer a mix-and-match 6'er.

I have to knock them down a few points in the service area as there doesn't seem to be anyone around that is very knowledgeable in the beer field. The staff is nice though.

Another complaint, as it is a supermarket the lighting isn't exactly beer friendly. But some how all the beer I've purchased seems to have made it through unscathed. Including some beers that have obviously been sitting around for awhile. For example Stone's IRS which was brewed in the spring this year.

Edit 8/8/2011: You go to Hiller's because it's the only place within 10 miles that carries any kind of selection of specialty foods and they have excellent meats as well. You don't go here on a beer run. It's a few cuts above the typical supermarket like Kroger or Meijer but a few cuts below pretty much any specialty shop. Rotation is hit and miss so check dates and don't expect any help with beer specifics.

The Hiller's family just opened its newest and brightest location [Union Lake Hiller's Market] at Union Lake and Commerce Roads in Commerce Twp. [MI]. Hiller's is a large store [maybe the family's largest?] that was previously occupied by Farmer Jacks. The Market stocks food items that are gourmet, hard-to-find including beer and wine.

Hiller's stocks a good selection of Michigan Brews i.e., Bells, Dark Horse, Dragonmead, Founders, Arbor, Michigan, New Holland, Kings, Atwater, Arcadia, Detroit Brewing, etc. Other US offerings; Dogfish, Victory, Rouge, Flying Dog, Stone, Lagunitas, Great Lakes, Brooklyn, Magic Hat, etc. German and Belgian offerings are [but not limited to]; Weinhenstephaner, Paulaner, Spaten, Duvel, St. Bernardus, Rochefort, Westmalle, Golden Dark, Chimay, Hoegaarden and Canadian brewer Unibroue.

All the beer is sold cold - I couldn't find any non-refrigerated. Hiller's has a large WALK-IN cooler and one standard cooler. The walk-in is nice, however, it is hard to spend much time in there, as it gets rather cold. I also wish they sold non-refrigerated beer.

Hiller's prices are competitive for the metro Detroit area.
