well now, everything i have brought home from HOLLINGSHEAD DELI has been expired. i was pretty buzzed leaving the place (they have a great assortment of taps and bottles, but the bottles are all old) and obviously didnt check what i was bringing home with me. it's still a great place, but i guess i'm reviewing something that was a "drink before" of 11/ 2012....
pale, pumpkin, toffee color pour with a weak head on top.
smells like a roasted toffee malt and brings the flavor with it. very nice taste; like a dark hofbrau (which i just had at THE RATHSKELLER) but not quite the same. very nice sweet and malt-y, tastes commercial but still unique.
for being old, it tastes great, it's another great german brew and i love the stuff from germany. i normally cringe at anything below 5% but i forgive this because it's german. i'm partial; i cant help it. i think the age of the beer really comes through in the 'mouthfeel'- it's kind of thin and bland and i lowered the rating here for this. but it's still a great brew....

Presentation: Sleek 16 oz brown euro style bottle, no freshness date.

Appearance: With this sample the yeast was swirled and decanted into the glass. Very cloudy pale orange with a creamy white lace.

Smell: Soft oily clove on the nose, fruity and lively with hints of earthy yeast.

Taste: Medium bodied that is meshed well with a marvelously textured mouth feel. Light lemon twang with a very evident snappy spicy clove are followed by warming fruity esters and a fresh baked cracker malt flavour. Hop bitterness is nearly non-existent which is perfect for the style. An earthy yeast character picks up the finish and lends a nutty flavour.

Notes: A little robust and lively, a hard Hefeweizen to beat. Goes really well with a smoked ham and havarti with spicy mustard on marbled rye … a.k.a. a great lunch time brew.

Pours a beautiful hazy golden. Head is dense and white. Not super aromatic. May be hints of banana. There's definitely those banana and clove esters but it's a little cleaner than other hefes. A very nice beer for a hot day.

This is a fantastic German Hefeweizen. Right up there with my other favorites- Franziskaner, Weinstephaner and Ayinger. A pleasure to drink..

Prost!!

Poured from bottle marked best before 2015/09 into Weizen glass

Aroma is there but not at all strong. I was left wanting more. Taste is spot on for the style, requisite banana and clove with a crisp finish.

Overall a solid beer. Wishing I had bought more.

500ml bottle in a glass. Orange, amber in color with a thin head that dissipates quickly. Smells like banana. Very smooth taste, reminiscent of a Hoegaarden, but more full bodied with a few fruit notes thrown in. Highly recommended.

Pours a hazy golden straw color with a distinct orange hue. The carbonation is visible and there is some sediment floating about. The head is about a fingernail length high and retains well.
Lots of banana in the nose, alongside orange peel and cloves. Typical Hefeweizen aroma.
The banana carries over to the palate and adds light sweetness. Yeasty, with a hint of citrus and lemon, and peppery for balance. The carbonation is prickly at first, however it loosens up as it warms, which, makes for a silky finish. Light but with some character.
A great example of the style. I will have again.

Best by September 2015 enjoyed September 30, 2015 in a pilsner glass.

Look - Kept head contained with careful pour. Big bubbled white head. Clear golden body with a lot of carbonation flowing up. Good lacing.

Smell - Grass. Wheat. Lemon. Spice. Banana.

Taste - Crisp wheat. Spice. Malt.

Feel - Carbonation is not too overpowering. Sits well. No tongue damage whatsoever. Lighter beer so lighter feel.

Overall - These beers got me to try non macro light beers. Not my cup of beer now but have to reminisce sometimes.

S - Clove, slight ripe banana elements, Grassy notes all balanced quite well.
T - Biscuit, delicate hop note, wonderful yeasty notes.
F - On this hot day the fell was exquisite. light and delicate.
O - A very nice offering, I have passed up several times, but not again.
Cheers

This Hefe pours a lemon yellow slightly hazed with low transparency. The head is one to behold, that's really all I can do because of its long winded staying power. It looks like melting styrofoam, every time I look back it's taken on a new shape. It also is leaving some phat azz lacing. The nose is sweet and yeasty, lemon rind, banana and clove. This is a smooth and fruity Hefe, with plenty of spice. Really tastes a lot like it smells. Big banana upfront, followed by a buiscuty malt middle and some lemon tartness on the tail end. Very light on the tounge and low carbonation keep this very quaffable.

Another hefeweizen to cross off my list. On to the beer:

Pour a little out of the bottle, and get a lot of foam. Eventually, it looks picture perfect with a big triple digit thick head which eventually dwindles away on top a body of cloudy darker yellow, Very spicy aroma. Overwhelming ground clove at first. Some phenolic activity crawls out after the spicy aromas clear up. Lovely.

The yeast does less work in the flavor compare to other Bavarian hefes. A touch of spicy hops makes its presence, along with some malted wheat, hint of citrus, chewing gum, and a touch of banana. Slightly spiced tingling on the tongue...it must be those hops.

Not bad. Okay, so maybe this review isn't totally fair; it's 5 months past its "best before" date.

I'm not too familiar with this particular style (although I tend to like most German wheat beers) but this beer definitely encouraged me to delve further into the Hefeweizen realm. I purchased this beer in a pint bottle, mainly to recycle the bottles for home brew, but was quite impressed with it. In the glass it has a golden straw colored appearance. The smell is very yeasty, with an apple, slightly bubblegum scent. The flavor is hearty but has a lingering pleasant aftertaste, without a hint of bitterness, that reminds me slightly of bananas. I'm normally not really into fruity flavors but this beer strikes a lovely balance between all of it's fruit undertones. With its high drinkabilty, I see this being one of my favorite "all night" beers.

The beer poured a hazy straw yellow with a significant fluffy white head with little retention. The aroma was pure hefeweiss with strong notes of banana and cloves, but more on the spicy clove side. The taste was light and refreshing with more of the signature Hefe banana and cloves and a hint of bready wheat. The body was less creamy and more effervescent and the low bitterness made for a refreshing drinking experience.

Single, 500 ML bottle copped from Total Wine and More in Union...
Appearance: One of the best Hefeweizen appearances... Gigantic, full, five-fingered head... Cloudy, hazy, off-yellow hue...
Smell: True-to-the-style aroma replete with bananas, cloves, wheat, and fresh, ripe fruit...
Taste: Authentic, crisp, refreshing taste bursting with fresh fruit, melons, pears, and green apples...
Creamy mouthfeel for a relatively modest ABV...
Very drinkable...
Great stuff...

A: Pours a straw-golden, hazy color. Thin head with little retention. Very cloudy.

S: Banana esters, clove, some bready/grainy aroma with a hint of bubblegum

Taste and Mouthfeel: It's thin, watery, and light on the tongue. Follow the nose. Nice bits of banana, touch of bubblegum, nice grainy wheat flavor. Medium-carbonation with a medium-low body. Fruity esters.

Overall: An excellent wheat beer. One of the best. Very freshing.

A class act Hefe. Spice, fruit, raisin, dates, very smooth MF. Beautiful pour in a Brooklyn Hefe glass with a 4+F head. Be sure to shake the bottle or turn it around upside down to get the yeast into the flavor balance.

500ml. Gold pour, large white head when poured. Laces pretty well as it goes down.

Aroma, a yeasty straw/hay. Limited banana and clove.

Taste matches, which is why I prefer German Hefe's, very under control banana and clove. The wheat shines without being blown away by spice. US versions allow those flavors to be out of control in my opinion.

Crisp, clean light bodied, extreamly easy drinking. Carbonation is higher than in US versions. Most importantly I would want to drink more, which I usually don't with Hefe's.
