St. George Nut Brown Ale is a classic English-style Brown Ale with flavors reminiscent of biscuit and caramel that is well balanced by a mild hop character. This beer was traditionally served in taverns as their house beer. Our Nut Brown Ale is light brown in color with a thick creamy head.

12 oz. bottle with no freshness date. It pours an orangey amber with light carbonation and a half-inch of off-white head that reduces to a collar and leaves light lacing. It smells wonderful, with milk chocolate (think Hershey's), molasses and caramel malts, light diacetyl, and hints of maple and vanilla. The flavor is about the same with minty? hops, mild coffee, and a mild bitterness on top of a medium, prickly body that leaves a medium finish. A pretty good Americanized brown ale that has an intoxicating aroma.

Poured into a glass mug.
The appearance was a nice looking brown color with a quickly dissipating small cap of an off white foamy head. Not much lace.
The aroma had some toast, caramel/toffee malts, smooth roasty nuts and a little but of earthy/floral hops.
The flavor moderately leaned into the sweetness of the malts, some roasty to toasty character warms into the hops, light bitterness. Mild aftertaste of nuts and caramel malts.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied, maybe a little under. Good sessionability and carbonation. Mild nutty finish.
Overall, decent as an English brown ale, perhaps would have again if offered.

From the bottle, it pours a clear darker amber with a modest head, soon diminishing to a thin layer and ring. Some caramel malts and toasted nuts (?) in the nose. The mouth gets a pleasant lightly caramel malty flavor.

L) Pours a light copper amber color with a small white head. Some lacing.

S) The smell is lovely with toasted biscuit and buttery toffee, with notes of pecan praline as well.

T) The taste is lightly roasty with lovely caramels and toffees, not too sweet though. There are some toasted tree nut notes, and a slightly citrus hoppyness that provides balance.

F) Very light, medium to high carbonation.

O) This is a solid nut brown, could stand to have a bit more of a forward malt, but it's good nonetheless.

A: The beer is hazy orange amber in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation along with some fine particulates floating in suspension. It poured with a finger high off white head that has good retention properties and consistently left a short head covering the surface.
S: Light to moderate aromas of nutty malts are present in the nose along with some notes of fruity yeast.
T: The taste has some flavors of nutty malts with notes of butter and hints of caramel and fruity yeast. No bitterness is perceptible.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a high amount of carbonation.
O: This beer isn't nearly as malty compared to most of the other nut brown ales that I've had—in some ways it's more like a hybrid between an English Pale Ale and an English Brown Ale.

A: Pours a relatively clear deep amber approaching brown in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising quickly from the bottom of the glass, light to moderate amounts of light yeast particles in suspension (medium to larger sized particles), and faint copper highlights. The beer has a two finger tall fizzy foamy light beige head that slowly reduces to large patch of thick film covering the majority of the surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of caramel + toffee malts, toasted malts, and orange peel. Light hints of nuttiness.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of toasted, biscuit, and caramel malts with a light amount of caramel + toffee sweetness. There is a light flavor of nuttiness and just a hint of earthy hops towards the finish. Minimal amounts of bitterness which fades away almsot instantly.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Light to moderate amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: This one definitely seems to be over-carbonated which makes it a little less enjoyable than I was expecting - I like an English Brown Ale. Nothing special or spectacular here, the flavors are pretty good though a hint too sweet for me. Probably would not grab this one again.

Odd beer. Doesn't really qualify as a nut brown in my book. Lighter than even an amber in color. SUPER sweet, but with very little complexity. Tastes like a sweet lager.

Enjoyed from the 12 oz bottle from my Dr. friend. Thanks Chris!
The nut brown pours a light amber color (?) in a pint glass with a moderate head of white foam that settles to a thick pool, thick ring, and nice lacing. Nose of walnuts, subtle brown sugars, and little else. Flavors follow the nose with nutty flavors featuring walnuts and a touch of sweet brown sugar that fades in the back to a subtly sweet aftertaste that ends subtly bitter from the malt and a touch of hops. Good carbonation but the finish is somewhat watery. Good for a session, but NOT a nut brown and not on my list to try again.

Cheers

12 oz bottle into a teku.

Appearance: Pours a dark copper color...but not that dark. By brown ale standards, this is fairly light (though it's on par with Newcastle Brown). The head is off-white in shade and a finger high. It has a soft texture, but underwhelming retention. On the other hand, a nice ring of lacing sticks to the glass. (3.75)

Smell: Certainly, it's nutty. I get a strong walnut component throughout. Problem is, that's all there really is to it. I don't pick up much in the way of nuanced milk chocolate, caramel, or brown sugar. All told, it's a bit underwhelming aromatically. (2.75)

Taste: Again, blandness pervades throughout. A touch of nut flavor opens it up, while the finish is generically tangy. This is literally all I get. Okay, I lied: it's also a touch vegetal at times. Brown ales get a lot of crap for being bland - well, this beer is a microcosm of why the style is disliked by beer geeks. Just bland, bland, bland, and bland. (2.25)

Mouthfeel: Fairly light and crisp for a brown ale. It also has powerful carbonation (maybe slightly too powerful?) and good attenuation. So it should be drinkable, right? The problem is, the flavor is so bland I don't feel the desire to drink it vigorously. Ah well. (3)

Overall: This is a very dull and boring brown ale. I've liked the other two beers I've had from St. George so far, unfortunately this is a misfire. At least it's decently drinkable - otherwise, I would have grilled this beer to hell and back. Still, I won't ever search this out again. (2.5)

2.59/5: First miss from St. George

Poured from a bottle into a shaker pint, the beer is a crystal clear, caramel coloring with a tall, chunky, foamy, off white head with a decent lacing left on the glass. Aromas of subtle sweet caramel and toffee, nutty highlights, and not much else. Fairly lackluster nose. Flavors are tangy sweet forward, sugary and slightly roasted, with notes of caramel and nut. Light bodied, almost watery, with the sugary sweet notes going into the aftertaste. The finish has the same sweet linger, now cloying, on an otherwise effervesced, light ending. Meh.
