I'm not going to lie, I did enjoy the fish & chips, and the baked brie appetizer, but the service we received the other night was atrocious.

The beer selection is adequate, although expensive... I did enjoy a few Hardcore IPAs, but after we had been there for a few hours with a large group the waitress informed us she was leaving so we needed to close out... okay, no problem. They then refused to separate checks... again, not a huge problem, but something we should have been told beforehand. After passing the check around and tossing some cash and cards in we were informed they could only run two cards per party. Uh, what? This is 2011, how the hell can you only run two cards?

After a couple people sucked it up we ran two cards, only to have the automatic gratuity charged again. The original bill had 20% added, then our cards had another 20% added on top of that. Extremely annoying... with so many options in Houston I won't be going back here.

Located in the beautiful St. Thomas campus area of Montrose in an Ivy covered old church building. They share the building with a branch of the Houston Public Library and a nice sandwich shop. They are striving for a British pub atmosphere and the selection of brews and the menu reflects that. They have an Anglo-Irish selection on tap with pale ales, brown ales, an Irish stout and lager, and an IPA, with Blue Moon wheat ale thrown in for some odd reason. The bottled selection extends the repertoire to local favorites and some additional British and Irish brews. There is a full bar service as well. A jazz bar is attached that I didn't check out, and there is a nice outdoor serving area with one of those giant chess boards where I often see people actually playing chess. I've been there several times, and it's always pretty quiet, a pleasant place to quaff one or two after work and a nice place to take friends.

Parking in this area is brutally difficult to find. Use the parking garage around back and they will validate.

The place is obviously going for a British pub feel. It has a nice rap around bar and tables scattered about. A fire that makes the place feel cozy. There is a banquet room, an upstairs, and a piano bar attached. They have some of the best jazz in the area. Seriously, Dave Brubeck has played here.

Anyway, on to the beer. It was just standard bar taps. Blue Moon, Guinness, Harp, Bass, Smithwicks. Maybe a couple of other beers on tap. They also had a tap of Bridgport IPA (obviously the highlight of the micros). In bottle they had Shiner, BMC, Belhaven, and Sam Smith Brown Ale. If this is a beer bar, I am disappointed to say the least. Though I don't think that is what the bar is trying to achieve. I would have loved to see Fuller's, or even Bridgport's ESB. How an you have a British pub without an ESB?

I can't complain about the service. Though nothing to right home about. Just some waitresses working for tips. There is a large menu. Lots of British pub grub. If you like potatoes this is the place to go. I can't remember what it was called, but I had a baked potato stuffed with seafood and mushrooms. With mashed potatoes on the side. It was different and good. I would call it above average, not great. The Scotch Whiskey selection was much more extensive than the beer selection, and I enjoyed an 18 year old Macallan.

Overall, a very nice restaurant to have a meal and a drink. Though this is far from a beer bar IMO. If you are thinking this is going to be like the Gingerman, the Flying Saucer, or even the Stags Head you will be disappointed. Though if all you want is to relax with some friends for a night out, this would be a good choice. A place I will revisit, but for the jazz bar upstairs, the whiskey and interesting food. Not the sub par beer selection.
