American brown... "Based on a Hefeweizen"? Alright, why not.

A - Copper-brown in color with a decent-sized head and a just a little bit of lacing.

S - A little roastiness, banana and clove esters.

T - Tastes about like a dunkelweizen, but a little hoppier and a little more chocolate. Banana and the light chocolate flavor work well together, but I found that the rest of the elements just don't blend. On the finish, some hops and some clove come crashing across the back of your palate in a rather unpleasant cascade.

M - The mouthfeel was a little overcarbonated and prickly.

O - The beer works in concept, but in practice the flavor components don't really come together very well. I've had beers before that attempted the same kind of flavor combination but manage to pull it off much better.

Grabbed this during a recent visit to the OBX and was very impressed.

The description of the beer read "Based on Hefeweizen, this brown ale is steeped with Cocoa Nibs; it has a subtle smokey, chocolate aroma comingled with bannana esters. Smooth and silky, this ale goes down easy…"

Cocoa Brown was reddish-brown in appearance and almost perfectly clear. Wonderful smell- some sweet milk chocolate dominated. The taste was fantastic, lots of banana sweetness up front followed by chocolate and roasted malt close behind. Very unique and awesome! Mouthfeel was medium weight with some carbonation and a little creaminess to it. Finished smoothly and sweetly; very easy to drink.

The description was dead on as far as tastes and smells, although I was confused about the Hefeweizen part as I didn't get anything from this beer that indicated that style to me. I really enjoyed this one- it was truly unique, and I haven't tasted anything before to compare this one to. Defintiely a must-try during any trip to the OBX.
