Notes: ESB, short for extra special bitter, is an English style ale characterized by a rich caramel malt flavor and assertive hoppiness. In Britain, most ales are bitters which are organized by strength into ordinary, special and extra special. The fruity undertones in the flavor of Jackson’s ESB are provided by an imported English yeast.

Nice color, quite dark, with a twinge of amber. Good clarity. Tried in a 6 oz sample (time contraints) and was absolutely blown away. The East Kent Goldings (allegedly, unfortunately I didn't get to speak directly with a brewer) shone through with a bright fruit nose and flavor, strong with apricot and accentuated with a sweet but unique floral essence I couldn't exactly put my finger on. It was certainly a bitter beer, but not in the way many ESB's are bitter- certainly an Americanized version of the original English style. The maltiness wasn't overtly nutty, but rather sublty toasted. It tasted like the hops were first added midway through the boil, say around +45 (assuming a 90 minute boil), producing a very aromatic but not astringent bitterness. The hops were the outstanding ingredient of the beer, but they stood upon a very well crafted base of malt, which kept for a very balanced, drinkable, yet complex beer.
My sample was one of the first pours of the entire batch. Everyone at the bar was impressed, and the bartender commented that he usually wasn't a huge proponent of the Jackson ESB, but this time he really enjoyed it. Not sure if they made some alterations to the recipe, or what the difference might have been, but bra-VO!
