Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a chestnut color with a one finger of billowy just off white foam. The head has a decent persistence, fading to leave a nice level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of strong of a caramel smell mixed with a lightly toasted bready smell. Along with these aromas comes some smells of a nutty nature and a light hint of a dark fruit taste with a bit of plum and raisin.

Taste – The taste begins with a caramel sweetness matched with some flavors of a toasted bready and slightly nutty taste. As the taste advances, the toasted flavors fade a bit all while the caramel grows more intense in nature. With the roasted flavors fading, the bready toasted bready taste takes on a bit of a more bready/doughty flavor, all while at the same time a little bit of a grassy flavor comes to the tongue. At the very end, a little bit of an earthy flavor joins the taste profile, leaving one with a moderately sweet, somewhat lightly roasted and nutty flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the on the thinner and crisper side with a carbonation level that is a tad high. A little thicker of a body and lighter carbonation level may have been slightly better for the style and flavors, accentuating the sweeter caramel and toasted notes a bit better, but overall for the lighter abv., the feel was pretty good.

Overall. An alright brew overall, but nothing all that exceptional, as it lacks a real flavor depth and body that would have stepped up its game a bit.

Thanks to the creator of the canquest, woodychandler, for yet another canned beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a pretty dark auburn color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is malty, nutty, bready. Taste is full of malts, some nuts, definitely a good bit of breadiness. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a solid beer.

Appearance: chestnutty brown with dark garnet hues, great clarity, thin off white head

Aroma: nutty. And bready. With an overall clean aroma

Taste: nutty and bready, like the aroma with a nice crisp finish and very balanced flavor.

Mouthfeel: medium body, very drinkable, medium carbonation

Overall: A great session brown. Very balanced with nutty and bready flavors prevailing. Hop bitterness curbs sweetness on the finish but without any real hop flavor, as it should.

I was up in Brooklyn this past weekend to attend Day 1 of Mugs Ale House's Belgium 2 Brooklyn 8 event and Alex Hall recommended that I hit Breukelyn Bier Merchants before I headed for home. What a coup! I found all kinds of CANs in their cooler, including this one and so The CANQuest (TM) rolls along merrily.

From the CAN: "Organic Beer Number 1 (OB-1) is a USDA certified organic brown ale made with organic malt and organic hops. The only other ingredients are Teton mountain spring water and brewer's yeast. OB-1 is mildly to moderately hoppy with a nutty malt character. OB-1 took a bronze medal at the Great Ameri[CAN] Beer Fest (TM) in the English Style Brown Ale category in 2008. INGREDIENTS: WATER, ORGANIC BARLEY, ORGANIC HOPS, YEAST. Snake River Brewing, Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Certified organic by Organic Certifiers."

The Crack revealed yet another brimful CAN and the lateness of the hour seemed to cry out for an inverted Glug. I am finding that the technique works best with a shaker pint as the receptacle. This venture netted me a finger of dense light-tan head with decent retention. Color was a slightly-hazy deep-brown (SRM = > 22, < 27) with ruby highlights. Nose was VERY malty, nutty, yes, but with a brown bread character, also. Mouthfeel was medium and I stand by my initial call of brown bread, especially in terms of taste. B&M makes a great brown bread that comes in a CAN and this was like a liquid version of it. It was tending to be a bit sweet for my taste, but there was nothing intrinsically wrong with it. The finish was semi-sweet, not cloying, so not outright sweet. I am going to end up damning this poor beer with faint praise, I am afraid. It just was not my cup of tea, but if you like this style, then I do not want to wave anyone off of it.
