Poured from odd sized bottle into new Belgium globe.
A- Pours a dark brown, almost black, dark brown head with a touch of red hue and ruby highlights held to the light.
S- Sweet chocolate, bitter chocolate, some oak and cedar, earthy and musty.
T- Follows the nose. Somehow I expected more. Roasty malts, bourbon, wood, earth with a lingering bittersweet aftertaste. This sounds weird but it reminds me of eating chocolate bars in a damp wooden casket in a shallow grave. Yeah.
M- Thin, doesn't feel like a stout at all.
O- not impressed. For the price and being from a giant brewery I expected something along the lines of Bourbon county...

Batch 1, bottle 679/1344. I've seen this on the shelves for quite a while, but at $22, I haven't been too tempted. I decided to try one before they all disappeared. High expectations.

Starting at fridge temperature, but imagine a little warmer would be better.

Very low head, leaving a ring of foam on the edges. Thick black liquid, maroon at the edges. First scent is the bright alcohol/whiskey. Smells a bit sweet, maybe honey? Molasses?

First sip: strongly alcoholic, a little sweet, but more dry/tight/astringent than, say, the Czar (and than it smells). Long alcohol finish. We like that it's not as sweet as it smells, because often big imperial stouts are too much.

Next sip: a little smoke on the finish? Alcohol/whiskey vapors? Thicker/sweeter the second time around. Nicely balanced, though. Full and rich.

The Czar is $9. Bourbon barrel aged Old Rasputin is $23. Ctayt is $22. I'm not sure whether it's worth the price. In any case it's very good.
