Berchtesgadener Jubiläumsbier
.5l bottle served in an Edelweiss glass in Berchtesgaden [brewery hometown].

Crystal clear amber and sparkiling with visible carbonation and a towering off-white head that has excellent duration.
Fine malt aroma with a veery bready aroma, but still not such as to prepare me for the rich malty flavor. Enough hops to keep sweet and bitter in good balance. A bit floral and herbal.
M: near medium body. Exceptionally smooth. Perfect carbonation.
O: an outstanding beer with the light hop load of a Helles and the rich, malty flavor of a fine brown. Highly recommended!

Caitlin and I visited Berchtesgaden on 22SEP10, to see the Kehlsteinhaus. Afterwards, we dined at the Schwabenwirt, and I was quite surprised to find this on the menu. It must have been well received to be still produced. I ended up having two 0.5l bottles with lunch, at €2.90 each.

Clear and golden, with steady carbo, it is topped by a white head, thinnish, with good stick. Body is a good medium, and is fairly smooth on the tongue. Aroma has some bread and grass present. Crackery flavor to start, it is also a touch herbal, with more grass present in the hop finish. Still a solid bier, and it went well with my Schnitzel.

Original review of 12OCT02 (on tap) - A special "jubilee" bier, brewed in honor of the 900th anniversary of the village of Berchtesgaden (1102-2002). Poured medium-copper in color, with a rocky, white head, and a tad o' lace.... Has a bready, malty nose, like the Festbiers I had in Munchen. Medium body-wise, but not quite as smooth as I like. Taste starts like a Fest, too, with a nice malty backbone. Some hops enter the picture late to give a nice balance. Good bier, and the locals seemed to be drinking this in droves... Zum Wohl!!

.5L, best before July 2011.

Pours a lovely and clear burnt orange. The three-finger head sticks around pretty well, and the lacing is average.

The aroma is slightly metallic, though has some apple-like hints to it, along with some doughy malts.

The flavor is richly malty for a 5.1% ABV lager. Notes of dough, crusty bread, and sweet grains. I also detect a subtle fruitiness, similar to the apple quality in the aroma, but different. The finish showcases some balancing Noble hops. The mouthfeel is medium-light, the carbonation smooth and non-intrusive.

This is a good Märzen. Not as clean or drinkable as some, but still solid.
