Here it is, Friday & the end of Summer break is nigh. I head back to the classroom on Monday, but it will be good to get back to work. I spent the summer recuperating from surgery as planned & now I am GTG. In the interim, I am CANtinuing to get it in & on for The CANQuest (tm)!

From the CAN: "Keep Cold! Enjoy Fresh!"; "Lawson's Finest Liquids is a small artisanal brewery located in Warren, Vermont, producing an array of hop-forward ales, specialty maple beers and unique creations. Super Session #8 is brewed by Lawson's Finest Liquids at Two Roads Brewing Co. in Stratford, CT."; "Our Session IPA is so tasty and quaffable that it will leave you craving more! Super Session #8 features full malt flavor and assertive hop character with copious additions of Mosaic hops late in the kettle and in dry-hopping."

I like that we are seeing the return of more normative 12-fl. oz. CANs since I do not always want a full pint. I Crack!ed open the vent on this one & began a steady, gentle C-Line Glug. My reward was the formation of two-plus fingers of foamy, soapy, rocky, French Vanilla-colored head with modest retention. Color was Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) with NE-quality clarity, enticing The Gelt Gang of Croesus, Mammon & Midas to rouse from their drunken slumber & join me for some hair of the dog. I was not in on last night's party as they again watched their beloved black & gold Pixburgh Pirates go down in defeat since I was on the winning trivia team at CKW2G at the time. Nose was unquestionably Mosaic! If you like tropical fruit salad in your lunchbox, then you will really dig what this hops strain does for beer! Man, it is like a tropical fruit riot in the glass. Mmm. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium. The taste was less intense in terms of its tropical fruitiness than what I got on the nose. This is part of the problem, as I see it, with these so-called "Session" AIPAs - more aroma than bittering. Do not misunderstand - it was hoppy enough to keep me happy, but it just did not come up to level of its nose. Finish was dry & while it was enjoyable, I was satiated after one. YMMV.

12oz can into IPA glass
Canned on 7/11/19
Pours a clear gold with big rocky head
Tropical dank piney aroma
Taste is light malt, followed by peach and apricot, with a dank finish
Feel is light bodied as it should be
This is a nice example of a session IPA, light malt and body, yet full of hop notes

Amazing dank aroma and taste reminiscent of some other outstanding dipas including their own Sip of Sunshine.

For the pungent Aroma and taste, I prefer this to the harsher (though widely available) Super Session #2.

Golden, dark yellow in color with a light haze. Poured with a moderate, creamy, off white foam good retention. Citrus orange and lightly dank herbal aromas with medium maltiness. Medium light bodied with rich, medium high carbonation. Sharp citrus and malty flavors with medium hop bitterness. Citrus and herbal flavors on the back end. Finished semi-dryly with malty and light caramel notes and a lingering herbal bitterness. Well balanced and hop forward with just enough malt character to balance. Fabulous, rich feel for a low abv ale. Hop character is not complex, but is solid and tasty. A fantastic session IPA.

Pours a light, semi-clear straw gold colour, with a finger of foamy ivory head. A tiny bit of lacing left behind. Visible effervescence. Even a slight green cast to the beer.

Nose: Super grassy right out of the gate. Green, grassy, floral, earthy, with lots of unripe green notes. White grape, cilantro, starfruit, horned melon, pine needles, lime zest. Very bright. Almost Nelson-like.

Palate: Super green. Again, loads of white grape, cilantro, horned melon, and just a whole garden of herbs. Lime zest. White grapefruit. I think there's even a mild onion note popping up. Coconut, too. There's a fragile sweetness that greets you, and then slowly fades as the hops take center stage. A nice mild but firm bitterness comes in late, and lasts into the finish, gaining greater force, as some nice pine resin and pithy notes come in, giving dryness and closure. There's a lot of flavour going on here. Very tasty for a session ale at sub 5%. Very intriguing to see what Mosaic is capable of when it's given room to spread its wings. I will say, there is a very familiar flavour dominating the whole thing, and I cannot place it. Edit: Really thinking that familiar note is underripe passionfruit. Tart, not-quite-ready passionfruit.

Mouthfeel/Body: The beer is light to medium light in body, but with a slight grainy creaminess and some hop oils, both wirking together to give it some body. It's super crisp, refreshing, and drinkable, but it isn't watery. Medium plus level of effervescence, contributing to the overall "lightness" of it.

Overall, this is just a killer session IPA. It's crisp, drinkable, and refreshing, as a session ale should be, bit it has immense flavour and depth of character, and it really stands out to me, not only as unique, but as a stylistic home run for the "session ale" category. Worth buying.

12 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 12/4/2017. Pours fairly hazy/cloudy medium golden yellow color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with awesome retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, mango, honeydew melon, guava, blueberry, citrus peel/zest, wood, peppercorn, pine, cracker, white bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, mango, honeydew melon, guava, blueberry, citrus peel/zest, wood, peppercorn, pine, cracker, white bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, mango, honeydew melon, guava, blueberry, citrus peel/zest, wood, peppercorn, pine, cracker, white bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and moderate pale malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and no lingering hop astringency after the finish. Moderately crisp/clean finishing. Moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and carbonation. High carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and fairly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.8%. Overall this is an excellent session IPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink with the modestly bitter/resinous/drying finish, not aggressive. Very flavorful and not watery for the ABV. Awesome mosaic showcase. Very juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hop complexity; with a nice solid pale malt backbone for the ABV. Minimal residual sweetness from crisp dryness. A very enjoyable offering, and impressive style example. Held up amazingly considering the age of the can.

It's a session, right?
What I look for in a session is something that gives me a good taste that I can have more than once.
I happen to like IPAs and hop-forward or at least non-fruit-oriented taste forward beers and this super session provides that. I'm very content and happy with the flavor it provides. If you like a similar flavor-forward style of actual beer, you will find this beer also quite suitable. Look for it and drink it. Nice stuff.

Pours a clear deep amber with a huge, well retained white head that left spots of lacing. Smells of citrus fruits, hops and some malt. Tastes of grapefruit, orange, pine, bready malts, grass and a hint of peach. Light to medium bodied, well carbonated, crisp and extremely refreshing. Excellent beer especially at 4.8% ABV.

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Packaged May 14th 2018

Pale amber body color, and quite clear, with some very fast rising fine carbonation. Soapy white head, with also soapy retention stretching to make three fingers in height. Settles down at a good but not too quick pace, with minimal lacing.

Light bodied aroma, sensing a little hop quality a bit of earth and green musty herbs a bit. Quite floral mix of dirt, with little sense of sweet malt backbone also. Kind of crispy like body sensing it seems too. Very garden like smelling, and green.

Palate seems to take the light quality to another level. Very pappery malt body, even for a session beer, making for quite a fleeting flavor and experience. Wet tasting hop, with a washing almost neutral malt flavor. Green herbs, and touches of chlorphyl like flavor on the finish. Flirting almost chalky aftertaste and mouthfeel.

Unfortunately not really doing much for me, even for a session IPA. Interesting hop aroma, but needs some malt contrast to balance.

Poured from a 12oz can with a packaged on date of 4/25/18; into a pub glass.
Appearance- gold with some oily sediment and plenty of carbonation bubbles that work to sustain a medium thick, soapy white head. Lacing is adequate adequate.
Smell- oily herbal hops with a touch of tropical fruit notes.
Taste- the flavors detected from the nose come through loud and proud from the first sip, thus presenting as a standard IPA, as opposed to a session!
Feel - comes off much stronger than the 4.8%ABV; nice bitter start with a mildly dry finish!
Overall - top notch session that doesn’t sacrifice flavor in order to obtain a low ABV; this is a keeper!

In a world of bigger and more exotic IPAs, any type of sessionable hoppy ale is going to have a hard time standing out. But this may be the best I've had to date because the taste is very robust and actually outdoes the somewhat subdued nose.

On tap at Blackback Pub in Waterbury, VT after a bruising 9-hour drive from southern PA. A clear amber with a persistent off-white head. Initial impression was pine, grapefruit, and orange, with a dose of bready malts to balance things. Mouthfeel is easy to drink; carbonation is perfect. Finish is dry and a little bitter. Usually stronger ABV makes IPA more interesting and rich. This one is an exception. It is not serious, it not hazy enough. The scent is not distinctive. But the taste and feeling are super-real.

12 oz. can dated 3/17/18. Purchased at Yankee Liquor in Framingham, MA. Poured into Belgian ale glass.

L: 3F white pillowy head. Decent retention. Leaves spotty lacing and a cap and ring. Beer is a clear light gold.

S: Largely grapefruit and orange with some melon. A little muted.

T: Grapefruit and orange, bready malts beginning to phone in at a month's age. Think I caught this at a very good time. A little bit of a piney finish.

F: Light bodied, medium carbonation. Hugely drinkable. Good construction for a session, good balance as well.

O: A bit better than Session 2, but I've always been a Mosaic guy. Put it right up there with Carton Boat.

A nice crystal golden color with light haze. A tall, fluffy white head of 2 fingers sits adorned on top.

Aromas of fresh baked white bread and light grapefruit and orange peels.

Flavor is resiny and bright, with hints of sharp pine, and then sweaty peach, white grapefruit, orange peel, and some white bread crust. Trailing notes of tropical fruit and pine.

Feel is crisp and clean, with lingering resins.

Overall, I'd believe this is one of the tastiest "session IPA's" on the planet. Very delicious, not skimpy on flavor at all.

Excellent, and perhaps the best, session IPA. Light and refreshing, but with plenty of delicious hop flavor and a good sturdy structure as well. The Mosaic hops offer a broad, tropical taste profile on top of the smooth and unobtrusive malt base. Sean Lawson has a way with things. Another big plus: it's not impossible to find! This beer pours a slightly hazy bright golden color with a two finger, foamy, bright white head. Retention is excellent. The head eventually fades to a half finger cap that sticks around for the duration of the beer. There are many rings and webs of lacing left all over the glass. Lots of active carbonation.

Smell is bright, juicy orange, dank grapefruit pith, pine and berries.

Taste is the same with a solid bready malt backbone. Definitely very hop forward, but there is enough malts to keep it from tasting like hop water.

Feel is medium bodied and smooth with rather low carbonation. Very easy drinking.

Overall this is a great session IPA, probably the best I've had. The hop flavors are immense, but it doesn't come off as hop water and is certainly not thin. I enjoyed this one much more than Super Session #2

L: Golden, slightly hazed but still pretty see through. Lots of apparent carbonation in the glass, nice head retention, some lace.
S: Lots of candied citrus and some blueberry
T: Biggest qualm is this is quite dry, which detracts from its "sessionability". Malts are reminiscent of crackers. Strong bitterness washes over the palate and somewhat overwhelms. Some slight sweetness mixed with a strawberry like fruity flavor in there as well.
F: Spritey, lots of carbonation, medium-light body. Silky but the astringency from the bitterness detracts from its smoothness.
O: Decent IPA, but rather similar to any standard west coast IPA. Also nothing really sessionable about this, besides the ABV being somewhat on the lower end. Too much bitterness and flavor to be something that I'd be cool with sessioning.
