this is one of those times when beer can be larger than life, like, this is something i have known about for a really long time, wanted for almost ever, and went to great lengths, as did my friends on my behalf, to acquire it. then it sat in the cellar waiting for an occasion as monumental as i knew this beer would be. finally curiosity got the best of me, we threw a maple beer night together, and this one was the centerpiece of it. when you dont have occasion, make one right?! well, part of me wishes i had the beer a year ago, its a little oxidized and takex on an english barleywine tone as a result of that, not a flaw for me, and i actually often enjoy this element in long cellared strong ales, but i feel like it takes away from the maple a little here, makes this less distinct than it actually is and should be, but thats my bad, and it really didnt diminish our appreciation of this at all. as much as i love maple, the idea that this is made with no water and just maple sap is so sexy, beyond appealing to me, and that aspect can be appreciated, the whole thing is candied and awesome, rich and earthy and complex and just the absolute essence of maple, which for me us unbeatable. toffee colored and smelling like a stack of good pancakes, thick and sticky but in such an authentic way. lawsons uses maple like nobody else, and this is the top of the heap. not at all boozy, but i do wish the oxidation was a bit less, its not a lot, but i cant help but feel like i a little bit missed the moment here, or at least its perfect moment. ill find this again for sure. a special special beer, as good as i hoped it would be all this time, and part of the reason beer still motivates me and turns me on the way it does. this is what its all about...

edit: i had the amazing good fortune to drink one of these a couple of years newer shortly after my first experience, a 2016 that has been refrigerated the whole time, and there is no oxidation in it at all, so it drinks like a totally different beer, way more sweet to me, but with that a lot more obvious earthy organic maple character, incredibly complex and sexy. based on these experiences, i would advocate drinking this one relatively fresh, although both experiences were sublime...

Bottle purchased at the 2016 release at MRG poured into snifter on NYE.

Pours deep copper/brown with a surprisingly vibrant tan head of big foamy bubbles. The head settles into ring around the glass.

Aroma is full powered real maple syrup with a hint of booze and dark fruits.

Flavor is smooth maple, rich and complex, dark fruits like fig, sweet toffee and a hint of booze.

Mouthfeel is full bodied, smooth, bit of warmth, light carbonation that perfectly suits the brew.

Overall a treat, the perfect late night sipper on NYE. Enough sweetness to balance the alcohol and depth of flavors. A unique and special brew.
