maybe im a little tainted by trying some of the excellent variants such as coffee & apple brandy, but i was sort of let down by this beer - although expectations were high. its got notes of dark roasted and burnt malts, hint of smoke & maple, slight bitterness. medium-full bodied, decent texture. overall and enjoyable stout but some of the variants really take the depth of flavors to the next level.

Appearance: Pours fudge brown with a mocha head; while the head is less than an inch thick it makes up for that with a nice pattern of squiggly lacing

Smell: Very roasty, almost burnt, with undertones of maple syrup; bittesweet chocolate tones are also present

Taste: Bittersweet chocolate with a roasty edge; some maple sweetness building through the middle; the finish is very roasty, almost burnt, like the aroma

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation

Overall: Having heard about this beer for a while, I was anticipating it to be sweeter and less roasty; I appreciate that the sweetness was held in check but the predominant flavor is the roast while I would prefer it to be the chocolate

Thanks, AaronF, for the opportunity

Another great beer from Lawson's Finest. Living in Vermont, you can expect 2 things: Good beer and good maple syrup. This beer combines the 2.

Pours pitch black with a nice, fluffy tan head. Aroma is very roasty with some chocolate and just a hint of maple sweetness. I expected the maple to be stronger in the aroma, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Taste is very roasty and not nearly as sweet as expected. There is maple flavor in there, but it's there just enough to let you know it's a maple stout and doesn't overpower. Very nice! Mouthfeel is ok, but could be a little creamier to put it out of this world. At over 10% ABV, the alcohol is well hidden. It's noticeable, but not distracting. Just another winner by Sean Lawson.
