Poured into a snifter, the appearance was a most black color with some slight dark amber to brown hues stiffly along the sides of the glass. Sustaining cap of tan foamy head glistened and slid concavely into a valley in the center. Not much lace.
The aroma captures an exceptional blend of sweet to roasty coffee bean goodness projecting upon some sweet maple tones, and some dark chocolate bittersweetness.
The flavor was moderately sweet with a dry bitterness from the roasty tones of the coffee bean and dark chocolate nibs. Moderate aftertaste of the roastiness dryly hits the sweetness of the dark chocolate and maple notes.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt nice and sturdy. ABV felt as projected by the brewer. Slight stickiness in the finish, but the roastiness does grip very nicely to smooth out any possible cloying qualities from occurring.
Overall, an absolutely spectacular imperial stout presenting maple, coffee and dark chocolate notes to make for a stellar evening.

maybe im a little tainted by trying some of the excellent variants such as coffee & apple brandy, but i was sort of let down by this beer - although expectations were high. its got notes of dark roasted and burnt malts, hint of smoke & maple, slight bitterness. medium-full bodied, decent texture. overall and enjoyable stout but some of the variants really take the depth of flavors to the next level.
