Alewife and I stopped into the Waitsfield American Flatbread on 02APR11 for a quick round before traversing the App Gap back to Bristol. I knew this place offered Lawson's, but I was a little bummed that it was the Maple Ale and not a DIPA or something more exotic. Anyhow, we each had a small glass (8-10oz perhaps) for $4.00 each.

Served in a slender, fluted-type glass, this ale was a muted, flat light brown color. A thin white head mostly clung to the edges, though good lacing was present here. The aroma was restrained, with maple sweetness evident in the air. The body was right down the middle, and it had a fairly even feel on the tongue.

Maple is evident in the flavor, though it's not overly sweet, mostly held in check. Some subtle caramel malt is in there, too, but I couldn't nail down any specific hop character here. An OK bier, but nothing I (or Alewife) would have again, though. Zum Wohl!!

Poured on tap. Big thanks to Sean for this!

Pours a deep cloudy golden color with almost no head at all. Smell is nice and sweet with a great maple aroma.

Taste is nice and sweet, maply but sweet enough to even it all out, Easy drinking and super excellent, very awesome!

22oz bottle.

Pours hazy orangy-copper with a half inch head of white froth. A partial skim coat and some errant dots of lacing for the duration of the glass.

Aromatics lead off with maple and plump malt. Hints of fruit and butterscotch follow through with some floral earthiness.

Medium bodied with a slightly tacky mouthfeel.

Maple sap and juicy malt start the palate. Barely any bitterness to take the edge off a somewhat sweet profile. Hints of orange and honey follow through.

Finishes with some lingering maple and butterscotch.

A nice take on a Maple beer, but it could use some more complexity.

Served on tap at the VT Cheesemakers Festival. Lovely amber hue. Plenty of carbonation. Smells like maple - but the real deal, not the "Vermont Maid" kind! Flavor is redolent of maple, but pleasantly restrained. Not the least bit sweet, yet finishes full with flavors of caramel malt. Paired it with some Tarentaise Alpine-style cheese, and it was a gorgeous toffee mouthful.
