The beer pours a soft amber color. Smells like an evergreen forest. Tastes like a pine tree which shows my lack of familiarity with evergreen trees. I assume the flavor is spruce instead of pine though. Surprisingly very refreshing. I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would.

Pours a light amber and leaves a finger of white head. On the nose a mix of hops and malts with a big smack of spruce. His spruce in the taste - like a Christmas tree. I've had a lot of spruce beers but none express it as well as this one. Real nice.

i think this one is way underrated, and is easily the best spruce beer ive ever had. it looks like a pale ale, a little orange, and a brassy luster to it under a short white head, but its so dynamic and expressive and unlike others i have had. the aroma on this is fresh cut pine, christmasy, but also very hoppy. i was a little hesitant, thought it might be overly bitter and intense on the palate with pine and hops, but its not at all, and the balance between the two is awesome. the hops are lemony and the spruce is very natural, fresh picked, and heavily dosed. i just cant believe how clean and alive the spruce comes through in the flavor. it seems the grain base is structured entirely to enhance that, enough body for it to cling to, enough sweetness to balance it out, but not so flavorful as to interfere with the vegetal plant freshness. the flavor is almost spicy, like a spruce tea made a little too heavy, you feel it in the throat and even in the sinuses, but its not hot and it doesnt linger too long on the back end. such a genuine spruce flavor, its really awesome, very vermont, and as good as the style gets for me. i drank this one way too fast.

2015 bottle
Look: a standard IPA yellow-orange pour with little head and normal lacing.
Smell: the nose on this beer bifurcates into coniferous evergreens and citrus hops.
Taste: the first two seconds taste like a typical Lawson's IPA; everything that follows is like a Christmas tree in your mouth. The first wave of flavor felt like I was consuming forced air from a car freshener. The actual taste is cedar, not spruce, although I think it makes little difference to anyone drinking this brew.
Feel: everything gets thrown off by the spruce explosion.
Overall: I was given a small pour at a tasting and that was probably all I needed to taste for the year. An interesting beer and an ode to the forefather of Vermont craft brewing, a beer worth drinking once because it makes for great beer conversation.
