BOTTLE: Brown glass. Branded pry-off pressure cap. 1 pint 6 fl oz. Nice label art.

Acquired: in a trade with Duff27. Thanks, buddy!

Reviewed live at low altitude in Austin, TX. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

7.5 FG. 70 SRM. 25 OG.

Vintage: ? 2014, I think?
ABV: 10%.
Style: <None listed>. "Ale with cocoa nibs added."
Serving temp: Cold. Allowed to warm over the course of consumption.
Serving vessel: Tulip.
Expectations: High (given the brewery).

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Half-finger wide. Khaki colour. Good creaminess and thickness. Luscious. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.

Retention: Average - ~2 minutes.

BODY: Opaque solid black colour. No yeast or sediment is visible.

It's a good looking stout, but it won't turn any heads. Not unique or special, but certainly appealing.

AROMA: Vanilla - like in a malted vanilla shake, cream, malted milk balls (i.e. Whoppers), chocolate malts.

Aromatic intensity: average.

Not as expressive/evocative as the very best stouts, but it's certainly appealing.

No off-notes, yeast character, or alcohol is detectable.

TASTE: Malted milk balls/Whoppers, dark malts, chocolate malts, chocolate, shake notes, vanilla malt, and cream. It's well-balanced, but isn't as expressive as would be ideal. Has sufficient intricacy, and it's well built, but not mind-blowing or unique. There's not a great deal going on here.

Depth of flavour: Average.
Flavour duration: Average.
Flavour intensity: Average.
Flavour amplitude: Good.

It's almost a gestalt build; it's certainly cohesive and is well-layered. I find it a bit too sweet; some roasted barley presence or burnt sugars would help balance it a bit more.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, soft enough, medium to full-bodied, and unrefreshing. Well-carbonated.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.

Doesn't elevate the beer, but it complements it nicely. Well-executed, albeit imperfect. There's room for improvement.

OVERALL: Drinks very easily for its 10% ABV - which is well disguised. It's not the transcendent stout I've had from Cigar City in the past (see Marshal Zhukov's), but it's a solid beer in its style and will please the discerning drinker. It's better suited to 6-packs than bombers, but I can't blame Cigar City for maximizing their profit margin. I'd buy it again if it were in 6 packs.

Huge thanks to Duff27 for the bottle!

On tap during a visit to CCB to pick up some goodies. Pitch black pour into the CCB snifter with minimal espresso brown head. Big chocolate aroma, light roast, sweetness, more chocolate, light hop notes. Mmmm smells good. Flavor is big time chocolate notes--I am told it is brewed with 6 types of chocolate--some lightly balancing bitterness from roast and a hint of hops, really nice. Rich mouthfeel with low plus carbonation, coats the mouth. Definitely a bit of a dessert beer. Lots of chocolate. While excellent, got super sweet toward the end of the snifter. Highly recommended.

Pours a dark brown almost black like oil, very viscous for a porter. Chocolate, and more chocolate on the nose, a little roasted malt too; follows onto the palate. Finishes sweet.
