Guayabera Citra Pale AleGuayabera Citra Pale Ale
Notes: Traditional throughout Latin America, the guayabera shirt combines style, functionality, form and tradition in it’s four-pocketed design. We at Cigar City feel the same reverence and appreciation for the guayabera that we do for the Citra hop varietal, an ingredient that imparts notes of tangerine, lime and berries to this traditional American Pale Ale. The exclusive use of Citra hops in this beer creates a flavor that’s at once unique and recognizable, while it’s dry, crisp character and moderate alcohol make it as refreshing and functional as a crisp linen guayabera.

Guayabera has a thick, soapy, egg-shell white head, a hazy, gold-orange appearance, with lots of lacing. The aroma is of citrus, lupulin powder, & white bread. The flavor is similar, with some bitterness. Mouthfeel is high medium, and Guayabera finishes mostly dry.

Light gold with a slight chill haze, good retention and lace
Mango, lime, passionfruit, and pine in the nose,
Much more fruity on the tongue. Lots of mango, touch of pear as well. I dig it.
Medium bodied with appropriate carbonation.
A damn fine pale ale, and an awesome representation of the Citra hop.

Served on tap at Yards House in Orlando, Florida.
A: Pours a slightly hazy, golden to amber color with a 1 to 2 finger, white head, little more than retention, but a solid wall of lacing.
S: Very light nose. Aromas of nonspecific citrus, caramel, and a little pine.
T: Semisweet. Flavor largely derived from nose with citrus more evidently orange and lemon. Low bitterness.
M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
O: Drinkable, but not at all a stand out.

Can purchased and drank at Acme Bar and Pizza in rochester, NY.

This one pours a slightly hazy golden yellow color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This one smells like tangerine, orange peel, grassy hops, biscuity malt, lime, and pine.

This is really pleasant and light little hoppy beer, and it works pretty well for me. It's so crisp tasting, with a juicy little hop story to tell - there's lime and tangerine, along with orange, grapefruit, and a very pleasant snappy and grassy hop bitterness. There's just the lightest hint of supportive and biscuity/sugar cookie malt.

This is light bodied, and super clean, with a really great drinkability.

This accomplishes exactly what it set out to accomplish, and that's to be celebrated here, for sure.

Picked-up three cans as part of a mixed twelve-pack at Kappy's in Norwell for about eighteen dollars. My second reviewed brew from these guys. I have had Jai Alai previously. I really liked this, more so than Jai Alai, wish I could get this in twelve packs in MA.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium golden amber with a one finger white head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of mild pale malt, citrus hops, light orange and lemon, mild mixed tropical fruit. Flavor is pale malt, citrus hops, orange, lemon, grapefruit and a little dankness; lingering citrus rind hop finish. Medium bodied with light creaminess. The Citra hops are obvious in this pale ale's flavor. The aroma was somewhat more complex, but the flavor is clearly Citra. Very nice, long lasting citrus hop herbal bitterness in the finish. This is a nice pale ale and quite refreshing. Well done. Nice to have Cigar City available in the Northwest now.

I had this beer on-tap in a pint glass at the Taproom at Pike Place in Seattle.

Appearance: medium orange hue with a tiny hint of haze. Head is a thin finger of frothy ivory foam. Pretty legit!

Smell: deep, dank, earthy hops; even oniony in their dankness. It still manages to be subtle, though, and not a total onion bomb — I dig it.

Taste: herbal, earthy, dank, and a little citrusy — these hops don't mess around. There's a bit of sweetness in the malt as well, but it's not overdone considering the hop character. Bitterness is moderate; this is good stuff.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a big carbonation and good creaminess for the style.

Overall: I am really enjoying this. I get different arrays of flavor as I drink this; it's not light, but it's quenching. Great.

12 ounce can, light gold in color. Nose is papaya, hops, mango, melon, citrus. Taste follows the aroma, with a malt sweetness in the middle. Mouthfeel is light to medium and finishes a little dry. Very easy drinking and goes down smooth with no bitterness. A good pale ale. The can was 3 months old, so I would like to try a fresher version in the future.

I've enjoyed cans of this beer during the summer over the last several years -- though I typically pour the beer into a pint glass. The can I purchased this year (in July) had a slightly different design on the container fwiw. The beer itself has a tasty citrus hop flavor, which I find very appealing.

12 oz. can - Canned on 05/07/19:

Pours hazed golden with a white head that thins to a lasting wisp. Trailing lace has some retention.

The smell has a robust citra hop aroma with notes of tangerine, lime and general citrus.

The taste is of citrus/lime with tangerine and some sweet-tart berries. Fruity citra hops shine through with balancing malt that keeps it a hop-forward APA, just shy of IPA territory. Nice bitter touch in the finish.

It is smooth. Taste lingers a bit on the palate.

I really like this APA. Easy to drink. Plenty of hop and malt character. VERY enjoyable!

12oz can, dated 7/19/19, poured into 14oz teku. Poured a cloudy orange-yellow color with just a thin cap of white head that had low retention and lacing.

Lots of hop scent at the front of the nose, but very minimal grain presence.

Same on the tongue; the hops dominate the front and middle, but fall away at the back, and there's no real malt showing.

The body was fairly typical; on the light side of medium, good carbonation, and a nicely dry finish.

Drinkability was fine, no issues.

Overall, a solid but not overly memorable take on the style. Worth a shot if you see it.

Canned 8/15.

L: Slightly cloudy yellow-gold with good sized off-white head with decent retention.
S: Light aroma of grapefruit.
T: Sweet bready malt flavor with citrus at the front. Good balance and quite light.
F: Little carbonation and medium-light body.

A proper pale ale. Much lighter than an IPA, but still has a good balance of the hop and malt flavors. Light and easy drinking. I like it.

Poured a seethru yellow-gold body with great head and some lace retention. Great aroma of citric and floral hops. Smooth, light, crisp, floral, cracker-like dry finish and beer has a great balance of citric hops and light caramel malt sweetness.

A: Pours a hazy gold. Can't judge the head because I don't think this batch was stored properly.

S: So incredibly fragrant. Smell reminds me of passion fruit, citrus, pomelos, and other bright tropical scents. A bit of malt breadiness. A good amount of herbs and grassiness.

T: Simple and clean. Presents the hops in such a relaxed way that allows you to savor it while not over doing it.

O: Crisp and refreshing. Just dipping into hop flavors and bitterness. I mentioned that the bottle I got might have not been stored properly. Will have to get another bottle.

Poured from a 12oz can with a canned on date of 6/5/19; into a pub glass.
Appearance- a fuzzy straw yellow with some floating funk and lots of bubbles; head is a medium thick, foamy white that leaves a touch of lace.
Smell- tangerine, raspberry, lemon grass and floral hops!
Taste- differs from the nose a bit with a strong grapefruit and green tea flavor profile!
Feel- bitter and light; very flavor forward like a citra IPA!
Overall- very well done for those of you like me who like their pale ales to masquerade as an IPA!

Hazy, cloudy amber-gold in color, this was an impressive-looking beer. The head is truly enormous, thick, and lasting. The aroma is somewhat earthy, and has a musty hop note and lots of lightly ripe fruit. The taste, though, is wonderful. Nicely balanced, with a pleasant hop flavorful bitterness. Full body. Nice.

Can, out of a sampler 12 pack.

Aroma: Heavy citric notes, orange, lime, grapefruit skin, with a little sweet malt base poking through.

Appearance: Opaque orange amber glass, extremely hazy, holds a solid cover of tight knit white bubbles that lace the glass.

Taste: Citric notes again, going a bit bitter, with a slightly soapy malt base. The finish gets a little tonic water note going with a long lasting bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Low, gritty carbonation, medium body, slightly watery texture, oily finish.

Overall: Checks the Pale Ale boxes, so firmly it starts into XPA territory. A bit bitter, but very tasty and pretty clean.

Very nice full bodied easy drinker. Much more taste and body than you would anticipate in this "lighter" variety. Nice on a hot day, especially while canoeing on a hot day, which is how I enjoyed this little gem.

Appearance: Cloudy orange-amber, with a nice-sized head of off-white foam and attractive lacing.

Aroma: Strong citrus hoppy goodness.

Taste: Nice fruity hops and tangy bitter citrus, albeit well-balanced. Superb pale ale that’s only a hair away from a lighter IPA.

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, pale and cloudy, deep orange color with a strong crisp white head that fades. (4.0)

Aroma: Strong aromas of grapefruit, pineapple, citrus. Also has a darker melon and berry to it underneath. Mostly grapefruit, pineapple, with underlying dark tropical notes. (3.75)

Flavor: Flavor follows the nose with citrus, grapefruit and some dark tropical and berry tones. A lot like mosaic. Sort of surprised it's all citra. No pine. Bready sweetness in the middle. Mild bitterness but finishes slightly sweeter. I don't get any lime. (3.75)

Feel: Medium bodied. Good carbonation. Finishes slightly sweet with some pithy bitterness of astringency lingering. (3.75)

Overall: Interestingly enough I compared this to Boulevard's collaboration with Cigar City (Tropical IPA) and in a blind test test, completely mislabeled them. This one has much more ripe citrus and dark tropical notes. Very similar to mosaic. Maybe my expectations were too high, but it definitely didn't blow me away. Balanced though. (Final Rating 3.77)

Old school APA meets a newer hop profile. I like this. It’s like a new take on Sierra Nevada Pale. Somewhat hazy, golden copper color. Aroma of citrus and ripe tropical fruit. Aroma could be stronger. Flavor is right on - the taste really shines, nice punch of cantaloupe and tropical fruit. Good drinking APA I picked up on vacation in the southeast.

Mild aroma, bright citrus - tangerine, lime. Slight pine.

Cloudy dark orange, just short of being turbid. Tall, thick, creamy, rocky head, receding moderately quickly, but leaving thick bubbly lacing. Head recedes in peaks and craters.

Medium body, little carbonation detected.

However, the bright citrus taste picks it up, so it doesn't seem flat. Taste is, as the aroma, tangerine and lime. Malts contribute a somewhat sweet breadiness. Well balanced, with gobs of flavor.

Finish is toward the dry side, but not fully since the slight sweetness remains, with a nice level of bitterness lingering into the aftertaste.

Overall, an excellent pale ale. Plenty of flavor, well made, and an enjoyable interplay between the hops and malts.
