Guayabera Citra Pale AleGuayabera Citra Pale Ale
Notes: Traditional throughout Latin America, the guayabera shirt combines style, functionality, form and tradition in it’s four-pocketed design. We at Cigar City feel the same reverence and appreciation for the guayabera that we do for the Citra hop varietal, an ingredient that imparts notes of tangerine, lime and berries to this traditional American Pale Ale. The exclusive use of Citra hops in this beer creates a flavor that’s at once unique and recognizable, while it’s dry, crisp character and moderate alcohol make it as refreshing and functional as a crisp linen guayabera.

Poured from a 12oz can with a canned on date of 6/5/19; into a pub glass.
Appearance- a fuzzy straw yellow with some floating funk and lots of bubbles; head is a medium thick, foamy white that leaves a touch of lace.
Smell- tangerine, raspberry, lemon grass and floral hops!
Taste- differs from the nose a bit with a strong grapefruit and green tea flavor profile!
Feel- bitter and light; very flavor forward like a citra IPA!
Overall- very well done for those of you like me who like their pale ales to masquerade as an IPA!

Appearance: Golden, maybe a tinge of amber and fairly clear, capped by a thinnish, white head.

Smell: Garden variety pale malts with aromatic hops smelling of green herb of the kind bud variety, sharp citrus and some pine.

Taste: Pale malts, minor hint of toasted grains, a bit bready. Little showing of malty sweetness. Robustly herbal, pulped citrus fruits and (again) some pine. Moderate bitterness. Hop flavors and their imparted bitterness carry one through the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: It's a hoppy ale, alright.

Had on tap at Lillies in NYC. Please come to MA Cigar City! Why are you not there but we have useless Stella Artois. Any ways....this is a very fruity blast - not overwhelming with the good. Nice 5.5% er. Good work - and screw you Stella Artois

The beer pours a hazy lemon yellow with a creamy head that falls clinging in rings. You can just see a subtle orange blush. Nose is tangerine and lemon. Cracker and tropical fruit. Sweet grasses and dank spice. Peppery hops. Drinks just like the nose and is accented by a light but lasting bitterness. Firm malty finish but abundant with hop flavors. That light tasting , juicy orange steals the show and the low abv keeps it going down easily. The bitterness is just enough to cleanse the palate and leave you with lemon, cracker and a tiny bit of white pepper. I'd say this brewer just winked at me with a pleasant and easy drinking beer that is a compliment to both Chinese and Indian food. Delicate and enjoyably sessionable.

I love a beer at 5.5% that tastes stronger and more robust, this could be an every day IPA
BREWED & CANNED BY OSKAR BLUES BREWERY. (My favorite brewer)
A) Over a clear golden body a robust lasting head that laces well.
S) Robust and ample. Onion and earth first, along side mango and grapefruit, both the front and back of the flower shop.
T) Seesaw’s through the manifold flavors in the aroma. On a caramel malt base. Nice bittering dry finish.
F) Woody, with a long drying finish.
O) Excellent, better than the 7+% Jai Alai (also great and their flagship)

I must be missing something. I am tasting some citrus combined with soap. A bit disappointed.

Pours smooth with a golden color with a sweet crisp aroma.
A nice clean taste with a sharp but sweet finish.
A consistent winner. Definitely worth a try.

12oz can - dated 06/19/19 - poured into an IPA glass at 42F.

Pours a faurly hazy deep apricot golden, with two fingers of puffy ivory head, which slowly deflates, leaving some sticky lacing behind.

Nose: Bright, lush, succulent Citra notes of tangerine, lemon, melon, kiwi, lime, and a hint of mango sit on a bed of pale and gentle caramel malt. There are some fragrant floral notes tucked in, giving the impression of lilac, lilly, lavender, and bergamot. As it warms up, there's a distinct note of spicy black peppercorn. On the nose, it sits squarely between East Coast and West Coast style.

Palate: This beer holds nothing back in terms of flavour. The pale malt grain, the caramel malt sweetness, the fruity tropical Citra notes, and the firm boil hop bitterness all hit at once, upon first sip. Flavour intensity is easily a 9 out of 10. After the initial rush, the more subtle hop flavours come into focus. Orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime, kiwi, melon, mango, pine, and all the delicate floral notes dance among the palate. Just like the aroma, as the beer warms, there's a bit of a black pepper note, along with a herbal element. The caramel malt sweetness accentuates the fruity components, whilst balancing out the bitterness quite nicely. The result is a very stable, balanced flavour, with no extreme points or edges. The finish brings pithy grapefruit, resinous pine, and a satisfyingly dry close to the malt. Dry floral notes continue to linger.

Mouthfeel/Body: The beer is light to medium bodied, with a considerable amount of texture and body due to the caramel malt weight. It allows thos beer to stay lower on the ABV scale, yet posess a satisfying body and not come across thin or light. Effervescence is right in the middle, and is appropriate for the style. The beer is quite crisp and drinkable, but had enough heft to be enjoyable even if you just drink one.

Overall: This is a nice little pale ale that incorporates elements from multiple styles, without conforming to any particular one. It between the weight of the malt, and the hop intensity, it really drinks more like an IPA, which is not a problem in my score book. It's a very nice display of Citra hopping, both in boil and in the fermenter. It's just a great all around, any occasion hoppy beer.

12 oz can picked up from the brewery 7/23 with a date of 7/22

Bright gold color. Slightly cloudy, but fairly clear overall. Huge pillowing off-white foamy head. A little bit of lacing.

You can smell it from 2 feet away. Lots of citrus and very fresh smelling malted grains. I would say orange and something along the lines of papaya.

The flavor doesn't quite live up to the aroma. It seems to be a little less balanced. A bunch of papaya, peach, orange, and cantelope. A little bit of zest. The fruit really dominates early and often, especially when colder. As it warms, the pale malts start to take over and it becomes much more grainy. Very, very good. If it was as balanced all the way through I would throw out Zombie Dust comparriosns because it isnt far away. Just not as hoppy.

Soft delicate body. Very airy/fluffy.

An outstanding pale ale. Wish I would have brought more home.

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a hazy orange color with a one finger head of fizzy white foam. The head fades rather fast to leave a little bit of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is strongest of tropical fruits of tangerine and papaya. Along with these smells comes some citrus hop lime, and a little bit of a blackberry/boysenberry.
Taste – The taste begins with a heavier citrus hop taste of grapefruit mixed with some bready tastes as well as some flavors of mango, tangerine, and papaya. As the taste advances the tangerine seems to increase all while some other tastes of berry and lime come to the tongue. A good up of the grapefruit hop and a moderate hit of pine come to the tongue at the end of the taste to leave one with a citrusy taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is on the thicker side with a carbonation level that is low. A little higher carbonation may have been slightly better for the flavor profile, but overall it is a pretty decent feel.
Overall – A decent brew overall, but nothing too great. OK overall.
