Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Traditional throughout Latin America, the guayabera shirt combines style, functionality, form and tradition in it’s four-pocketed design. We at Cigar City feel the same reverence and appreciation for the guayabera that we do for the Citra hop varietal, an ingredient that imparts notes of tangerine, lime and berries to this traditional American Pale Ale. The exclusive use of Citra hops in this beer creates a flavor that’s at once unique and recognizable, while it’s dry, crisp character and moderate alcohol make it as refreshing and functional as a crisp linen guayabera.

cool to have so many cigar city beers around town this weekend for the beer festival, thats always a treat. this is a citra hop pale ale, and looks to be not double, but triple listed on their page here. we really need to find a way to get that slop cleaned up. in any event, its a nice beer, but not worth a long wait in a line, fortunately there was enough around town that this was skippable at the festival itself. pale in color with a little haze, and nice and heady, white and lasting. it smells like citra all the way, but without that urine property i sometimes get from this strain. its clean despite having some body, and is carbonated well enough to cut the florida humidity. citra is more obvious in the nose than the taste, still there in the flavor, but far less convincing. it ends up being on the little generic side considering the following these guys have and the stoke levels that always accompany any of their beers. i liked it, found it refreshing, well balanced, and real drinkable, but i dont see what all the fuss is about, at least not with this particular brew.

Functional, traditional and looking the part, the hard working American Pale Ale beer takes on a stylish flare with the addition of Citra hops. Cigar City looks for inspiration in the most far reaching of places, but the central American workman's shirt is quite the reel.

Guayabera pours a rich golden color, not quite amber, the hazy beer crowns with a frothy white cap before rounding the nose with tangy citrus, green berry and poignant herbal perfumes. Light of graham cracker, the light honey, nutty and caramelized toastiness brings a softer sweetness to the early palate.

Its soft maltiness allows for a full hop flavor to command the middle palate. A lively taste of tangerine, lime and pink grapefruit offers a zesty and racy citrus taste while hints of gooseberry, kiwi and white grape bring about a tangy berry impression. Moderately herbal with fresh cut grass, light chive and hemp provide a bitter balance that shines above the malts without becoming unnecessarily hoppy in finish.

Medium bodied but trending crisp, clean and refreshing, the beer's restrained bitterness but high hop aroma and taste gives hop heads the upfront and centralized hop taste that they crave, but the bitterness of IPA is left behind, bringing the beer within the pale ale realm. A medium length afterglow of citrus peels, light herb and spruce has the next sip coming rather quickly.

12 ounce can into pint glass, canned on 3/29/2018. Pours slightly hazy deep golden amber color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, honey, toasted biscuit, light nutty/caramel, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, citrus peel/zest, light pepper, pine, honey, toasted biscuit, light nutty/caramel, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, citrus peel/rind, pepper, pine, honey, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and fairly crisp/resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol for 5.5%. Overall this is a fantastic American pale ale! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink with the modestly bitter/drying finish, never overly aggressive. Outstandingly vibrant, juicy, and dank Citra hop complexity; nice solid bready malt backbone, with minimal residual sweetness. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example. Loved the hop profile as expected.

12oz can. Poured out a clear, golden orange color with a small, white head of foam. It smelled of orange and grapefruit with a sweet caramel presence. Orange and grapefruit bitterness with a toasted caramel backbone.

Appearance: Pours a hazy amber color topped with a fluffy white cap that leaves splashy shards of lacing

Smell: Graham cracker malt tones support the fruity aromatics, bringing both citrus and berry elements

Taste: The graham cracker flavors buttress the hops from start to finish; the berry flavors arrive first, with strawberry and blueberry counterbalancing; through the middle, there is lime and tangerine and a bright citrusy element; the bitterness is held in check so the finish is a balance between the fruit and the malt

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: I like everything about this beer and if I ever had to commit to a single APA/IPA for all my future consumption, this would be a contender

Cigar City Brewing Co. "Guayabera Citra Pale Ale"
$6/pint @ Union Tap House, Philadelphia, PA on 18 August 2017

Notes: Hazy straw-gold body beneath a two-finger thick head of white that settles slowly into a creamy cap. Excellent head retention and lacing. Citrusy/tropical in the nose with tangerine, pineapple, lime, melon... more. It's a little unusual at first, you have to give it a few sniffs. I wonder if there are other hops in here besides Citra. The flavor follows with a grainy malt base. Very firmly bitter, leading to a dry finish. Medium bodied and crisp. Refreshing and highly drinkable, and also somewhat unique.

12 oz can with a 23 March 2017 canning date stamp.
Pours with a hazy, light amber colored body topped by a large durable but sudsy head. Sticky lacing.
Aroma: hops at a fairly strong level (think IPA); quite complex with tones of citrus, herbs, pine and grass.
Flavor: less complex than the aroma with dominance by citrusy hops, but some additional tropical fruit notes. Faint biscuit. Mild bitterness for style.
Feel: smooth medium body with soft, medium+ carbonation.
