Guayabera Citra Pale AleGuayabera Citra Pale Ale
Notes: Traditional throughout Latin America, the guayabera shirt combines style, functionality, form and tradition in it’s four-pocketed design. We at Cigar City feel the same reverence and appreciation for the guayabera that we do for the Citra hop varietal, an ingredient that imparts notes of tangerine, lime and berries to this traditional American Pale Ale. The exclusive use of Citra hops in this beer creates a flavor that’s at once unique and recognizable, while it’s dry, crisp character and moderate alcohol make it as refreshing and functional as a crisp linen guayabera.

An easy pour from a 12-oz. can (3/14/19) yields a soapy and rocky off white finger of foam with some large fizzy bubbles, short retention and small spots of lace. Hazy translucent orange straw color. A strong smell of Citra hops (orange, lemon and lime) with bread dough, faint grass and toasted pale malt translates to the semi-sweet, assertively bitter taste. The toasted malt taste is bigger than the smell and mixes well with juicy fruit and bitter hops. Dries a little during the quick finish, a mild spicy/bitter aftertaste lingers. Medium-light body, below average carbonation, a little flat at the end. N.E. style, boldly hopped yet balanced.

Hazy orange pour with moderate head that fades pretty quickly. Sweet and citrusy aroma, tangerine is noticeable. Taste follows the nose with some hop bitterness. A smooth, light bodied mouthfeel. Nice clean finish and aftertaste. I like this one a lot, an outstanding brew.

Guayabera pours a hazy copper color, with a nice large head. Citrus and hoppy aroma. Flavor is sweet, tropical fruits, yet a bitter finish. Good body and feel. Overall, very full pale ale, good fruit flavors, balanced with a big bitter finish.

A: Pours a yellow-orange color with 2 fingers of head that fades down to a thin cap

S: Lots of citrus up front along with some berry notes. Tangerine definitely sticks out. Also some light malt sweetness

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with the citrus and berry notes and then picks up some malt sweetness to balance the light bitterness. Finishes with lingering citrus

M: Light-medium bodied with moderate carbonation. On the smoother side

O: A very good pale ale that packs a citra punch. Super easy to drink. Worth checking out

Light and refreshing, flavorful and slightly fruity with just the right amount of bitterness to finish it off. This is my new favorite from Cigar City.

On tap in a pint glass. A hazy golden-amber color with a medium white head. Good staying power. Aromas were quite fruity, with tangerine, lime, and grapefruit. Taste followed. The above flavors were there along with a bready malt backbone. Clean and dry on the finish. And outstanding session ale.

Guayabera from Cigar City is a decent IPA. The citrus in the nose translates to the palate, although there is a slight sweetness in the nose that does not--and that's not a bad thing. Its low , 5.5% ABV makes it sessionable, and would probably relegate it to a solid lawnmower beer after yard work on a hot day. Just enough of a malt backbone to remind you it's a beer, not a juice. It's not a "HOLY COW, WOW!" beer, but it does its job, crisply and cleanly, slaking the thirst, titillating the tastebuds and pleasing the olfactory lobes. Like the shirt it's named after, it's not flashy, but it does the job neatly.

This is a unique beer. The taste of the citra hops is pronounced but there is a smokey malt backbone - this combination is a real workout for your taste buds.

A pale yellow color on the pour with semi-murky clarity and a fluffy white head of foam. Subtle hops on the nose but not terribly floral. The hops hit upfront on the initial sips with a smooth flow and finish. Light and easy drinking with a crisp and refreshing feel. The hop notes are pretty much all citrus fruit with lemon, lime, and orange. A light mouth feel in which the body holds up enough to keep it from falling on the watery side.

Overall, not bad but nothing really all that great either. Easy drinking and sessionable just not as hop forward as I would like it to be.

Looks a golden honey color with a white creamy /foamy head, Smells like a lime, indistinct berry aroma, fresh hay. Taste is fruity (citrus) with a berry and fresh dough flavor. Feels nice and crisp, almost zingy like a limeade. Finishes dry and crisp. Overall I wish I tried this sooner- Really good.Tastes more like an IPA than a pale ale.

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a hazy orange color with a one finger head of fizzy white foam. The head fades rather fast to leave a little bit of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is strongest of tropical fruits of tangerine and papaya. Along with these smells comes some citrus hop lime, and a little bit of a blackberry/boysenberry.
Taste – The taste begins with a heavier citrus hop taste of grapefruit mixed with some bready tastes as well as some flavors of mango, tangerine, and papaya. As the taste advances the tangerine seems to increase all while some other tastes of berry and lime come to the tongue. A good up of the grapefruit hop and a moderate hit of pine come to the tongue at the end of the taste to leave one with a citrusy taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is on the thicker side with a carbonation level that is low. A little higher carbonation may have been slightly better for the flavor profile, but overall it is a pretty decent feel.
Overall – A decent brew overall, but nothing too great. OK overall.

I don normally reach for too many brewers anymore that have sold out to some sort of higher power but recently decided to give this a shot.
Poured into a becher pint glass, the appearance was a clean ruddy glossy yellow color with a small finger's worth of white foamy head. This slid off fairly quick to leave a beautiful sticky film coating about a full unswerving remnant of lace.
The aroma had a gracious amount of full on bittersweet orange peel playing with a clean biscuit malt.
The flavor brought a hefty blend of sweet orange pulp to the bittersweet wonderful clean biscuity malts.Aftertaste leans towards a bitter orange peel playing with some biscuits.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied, perhaps a touch under with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt mostly good, maybe a little bit under. ABV felt on par. Sticky finish of orange peel.
Overall, I was a bit surprised by this as I didn't expect it to be as good as it was. Definitely a solid Summer slammer.

A beautiful hazy burnt orange color with a sudsy light tan head, this beer features juicy tangerines and berries on the nose. Really nice.

The tangerines are center stage on the taste, too, with nice berry flavors for balance and a subtle malt flavor. Very well done by Cigar City, IMHO.

Another solid offering from Double-C...

Didn't really think much of this beer when I picked it up, just grabbed it 'cause it was a Cigar City brew. When I cracked open the can and poured it into my pint I was amazed. Great amber coloration with different gradients of amber from top to bottom and though it had a thin head, it had a little staying power. What met my nose was by far the best aspect of this beer - sweet citrus of all kinds with a hint of cloves and honey to round out the scent. I found it to be light and crisp without being overly carbonated - actually, the carbonation was quite tamped down, which is a big plus in my book.

Now the taste - well, it wasn't all that I had expected given every other part of this brew. Bitter more like an IPA and just a pale, the sweetness in the nose did not necessarily translate to the tongue. Not a huge disappointment, just one that was surprising at first. Anyway, this was definitely one offering I was happy with and it reminded me to never assume until you actually taste...

All Citra hops, so a bit like a Zombie Dust....but missing whatever the magic is that makes ZD so good. Great mouthfeel, very crisp. A wonderful ale I can find locally at $9.99. Recommended.

Can poured into a Mountain Rambler Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours slightly hazy golden amber with a frothy off white head that settles to a firm layer and laces nicely.

S: Citrus, grassy slightly herbal notes, a little fruity, biscuity malt, and a touch of caramel sweetness.

T: Zesty citrus, lemon, lime, and grapefruit, fruity notes, mango, strawberry, and faint melon, grassy earthy notes, a hint of spicy pine, biscuity malt, and a touch of caramel sweetness. Bitterness is somewhat assertive.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation, finishes dry.

O: Not a bad pale ale. Kinda old school.

Big Citra aroma, full of tropical fruits and citrus. The beer pours a slightly hazy amber with a thin cap of white head. Slightly sweet malt flavor to begin with, mango and papaya come through, then a mildly bitter finish with a touch of lemon. Light bodied, with a touch of stickiness in the mouthfeel. Overall, a really good APA.

Pours a cloudy golden/orange hue with a two-finger head lining my glass. Canned 1/22/19. Citrus wallop in the nose, grapefruit and mango. Fresh, doughy malt followed by tart citrus undertones. It's very quaffable. Finishes clean with that doughiness. Yum. Buy again.

L-The beer pours slightly hazy and golden. The head is 3 fingers high, consisting of large off white bubbles. The head recedes to a large central island leaving legs of lace on the glass.
S- The nose is low moderate in intensity and consists of that weedy, almost catty dankness I associate with Citra.
T- On the palate I get less dankness than the nose. Mixed with the dankness comes in some citrus early in the sip. Mid sip you start transitioning to a mild pithy bitterness which lingers.
F-Mouthfeel overall is on the lighter side of medium. The lightness in mouthfeel combined with the light alcohol content make this beer quite sessionable. Carbonation is light which also adds to the drinkability.
O- A good if unspectacular pale ale. Highly drinkable with enough flavor to satisfy on a hot day. Recommended if that's what you are looking for.

Bruised golden and cloudy with no visible carbonation, topped with 4 fingers of rocky white head.

Smells of dank earthy green leaf, guava, jackfruit and citrus.

Tastes of dank earthy bitter leaf, balanced with sweet, pineapple juice, guava, condensed milk sweetness and a big, all pervasive chewy bitterness.

Medium to thick body with moderate carbonation.

I got this in Redding, CA where I am drinking it, Feb 14th, 2019. Excellent Pale Ale.

From the 12 fl. oz. can dated 01/29/2019. Sampled on February 13, 2019. 15 days fresh.

It pours a slightly foggy looking light amber-yellow underneath a modest white foamy head that fades slowly to a ring.

Pungent but delightful aroma of citrus, guava, pineapple and a grainy white bread sweetness.

Medium but choppy body.

Sweet flavor at first along with the aforementioned citrus characters and a lingering, bitter bite to conclude. Tastes and smells great but the appearance and body seemed a little less exciting for me.
