Guayabera Citra Pale AleGuayabera Citra Pale Ale
Notes: Traditional throughout Latin America, the guayabera shirt combines style, functionality, form and tradition in it’s four-pocketed design. We at Cigar City feel the same reverence and appreciation for the guayabera that we do for the Citra hop varietal, an ingredient that imparts notes of tangerine, lime and berries to this traditional American Pale Ale. The exclusive use of Citra hops in this beer creates a flavor that’s at once unique and recognizable, while it’s dry, crisp character and moderate alcohol make it as refreshing and functional as a crisp linen guayabera.

From the 12 fl. oz. can dated 01/29/2019. Sampled on February 13, 2019. 15 days fresh.

It pours a slightly foggy looking light amber-yellow underneath a modest white foamy head that fades slowly to a ring.

Pungent but delightful aroma of citrus, guava, pineapple and a grainy white bread sweetness.

Medium but choppy body.

Sweet flavor at first along with the aforementioned citrus characters and a lingering, bitter bite to conclude. Tastes and smells great but the appearance and body seemed a little less exciting for me.

Can dated 1/7/2019. CBF Tulip pint.

A: pours a hazy yellow-gold with 1/4 finger white head that fades very quickly. Little visible carbonation. No lacing, poor retention.

S: upon opening the can, the citra hop freshness is evident.

T: arrives immediately tart and juicy, bright citrusy hops are followed by a crisp, crackery malt base, and then a lingering citrus peel bitterness. Lacking a little malt for my taste, but crisp as all get out.

M: lighter side of midweight, bordering on light. You can tell it is not a lager or a session IPA, but it is very well attenuated. Pretty light on the carbonation.

O: Not as malty as I like my wintertime pale ales, but this is a super crushable. Reminds me of CBC’s Thunderlips more than anything, perhaps Mosaic Promise, too. Very much in line with the current trend of crisp, highly hopped citra/mosaic pales. I love these fresh, but man are they terrible after a couple months. Great beer from a great city. I highly endorse this one. Six pack worthy.

Look: Great looking pale ale. Pours with a somewhat hazy light amber color, forms an awesome head and retains it very well too.
Smell: The smell lets you know that this beer is hopped with Citra, but has enough to malt balance to remind you that it's an APA, not IIPA. Smells like beer, in a good way.
Taste: Taste carries many of the tropical, orange, and passion fruit notes we usually attribute to Citra hops, but again, the malt is there to balance it all. Guava is noticeable as well.
Feel: The feel is medium-bodied and paired with strong carbonation.
Overall: Guayabera is one of the better pale ales I've had, and it could easily be my daily drinker. If only Cigar City was more available in Northern California.

12 oz can dated 01/07/19, about 3 weeks ago.

Hops: Citra

This beer fuckin' rips. I grabbed a single can the other day, with tempered expectations. After all, Jai Alai is a malty mass-produced mess these days. I was pleasantly surprised. Has a tinge of NE IPA to it, but mostly it's just a really clean, fruity pale ale. I will buy this all the time if I can find it reasonably fresh.

American Pale Ale brewed with Citra hops. Poured from a can into a Woodburn tulip. The pour is very light apricot in color, very hazy, and sports about a finger of rocky white head with average retention. The hops certainly come through on the nose as you are treated to bright notes of orange, lemon, and pineapple.

Medium-light body with a firm feel. The beer is dry throughout, beginning with flavors of lemon drops and then progressing through orange slices, lime peel, and finally a stony dry sparkling wine character. Some sharp hoppy notes linger briefly. Overall, a nice, refreshing pale ale.

Poured from a can distributed in Maryland.

Look: real nice full bodied hazy pour
Smell: Pretty bad actually, smells like wet gym socks
Taste: Crisp and carbonated citrus
Feel: Not sure if I could do multiple in a sitting but very refreshing draft
Overall: nice looking and tasting pale ale, wouldn't seek it out again as a package purchase but would have again.

Canned on 12/3/18. 12oz can poured into a tulip. Pours golden with a subtle haze; fluffy eggshell white head that falls leaving nice retention and lacing. The aromas have some fresh bread and crackers along with some tropical fruits. Malts are there. The flavors basically follow the nose. Hints of coconut leading the way. Solid tropical vibe. Hints of lemon in the mix. There's a subtle sweetness going on. More fresh bread and crackers. Lots of fresh grass. Malts do their thing. Moderate to low bitterness. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is light with moderate to active carbonation. It's fluffy, smooth and easy to drink.

This is an alright pale ale. It's pretty refreshing. It stays true to the style for the most part despite having a tropical vibe going on. It doesn't come off as pale ale trying to be an IPA.

S: aromas of citrus, tropical fruit, berries, grass, tangerine

T: flavors blend biscuit, berry, tangerine, and tropical fruit

F: soft and creamy medium plus carbonation.

O: a flavorful, drinkable beer that is very repeatable

Excellent APA that is pretty much an IPA with 50 IBUs. Glorious citrus aroma and flavor with the Citra hops contributing lime and tangerine notes. Nice head with good retention and lacing. A refreshing beer and a good addition to the Cigar City lineup. Drink it fresh.

The beer pours with a cloudy orange color, just the slightest bit of golden light passing through the bottom portion of the glass. The head was a good half inch of off white foam that faded to a ring after several minutes. I’m getting some obvious sweet and juicy citrus on the nose from the Citra hops, but there is just a hint of a subtle dry earthiness in there as well. A second sniff reveals a little mango as well. I was expecting a sweet fruit bomb on the taste, but this is amazingly earthy tasting on the first try. It takes a few sips, but there is a whole lot of big citrus in the taste as well. Notes of orange, lemon, and grapefruit come out on the palate along with a slightly sweet malt base.

pours a misty amber with a medium head. nose; candied lemon, sweet bread, & citrus hops. taste; bread/caramel malt, orange pith, lemon zest, & resinous citrus hops (citra?) - light pineapple on the end. medium carbonation & mouthfeel. an all-around good apa that borders on ipa with the stength of the flavors here. this should be a standard issue offering.

12 oz can (“canned on 09/24/18... 1 for me lads”) poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Slightly hazy amber yellow with a lush head of white foam and patches of lace. Aromas of citrus fruit - lemons and oranges - along with lighter earthy dank notes. Citrus follows in the flavor with lemon, tangerines and hints of grapefruit. Malt body balances with light grain notes, but remains restrained. Danker hop and melon notes enter towards the finish with a clean bitterness. Light to medium body with crisply moderate carbontion. A very drinkable, citrus hoppy ale.

Pleasant fruity brew with a robust hoppy finish. After a rash of fruit-adjunct beers lately I'm suspicious of anything this fruity, but if it's just Citra hops, I"m impressed. Quite sudsy and mouthfilling.

Tastes of lime with some hints of malt and straw. Crackers and tangerine peel. Moderately bitter aftertaste. It tastes a little of raw grain but the hop flavor is clear, clean, and citrusy. From the 12 oz can purchased at Barons Market in San Diego.

Pours a slightly hazy golden color with an inch of foamy white head. Decent lacing early on.
Smell is citrus and lime with a small amount of hop bitterness on the end.
Getting a lemon/lime taste with more hop bitterness than I expected from the nose. Also some grapefruit in there as well.
Light-bodied with a soft feel to start, but finishes up pretty dry and bitter.
Overall a nice light and refreshing pale ale, but still with some good hop bitterness.

Very nice, dry pale ale that had some great notes. Slightly hazy yellow color with loads of foaming white head and spotty lingering lacing. Smells of floral, herbal and piney hops. Tastes similarly, along with lime, grapefruit and orange. A little bitter zest rind aftertaste but not objectionable at all. Smooth mild mouthfeel, good carbonation. A little dry and I personally would have preferred this beer a little more juicy.

12 ounce can dated 8/8/18. Poured into imperial pint glass. Both courtesy of Roguer.
Pours a slightly hazy but dull peach.
Two fingers fluffy head.
The nose is soft tropical fruits, papaya, mandarin orange. Big flavors of not quite ripe orange, grapefruit, pineapple, lemon. Pine tree finish. Straddles the line of an American pale and juicy ipa. Great beer.

So disappointed with Bevmo. Picked up a can from Feb of 2018. Damn, it's already September of 2018. Gross.

A: Pours that classic light lemonade color malt you'd expect for this style. 2 finger width of head. Quickly disappears.

S: Stone fruity. Peach, apricot, pear, mango, mild sweet molasses, and ends with a rising bread.

T: Just like the smell. Some chalk to it.

O: I gotta admit, this beer has aged nicely. Really nice to be honest! Some chalk on the backend which is to be expected. But everything else held up nicely. I'll give this another go.

Poured from 12oz can into glass. Stamped canning date is '07/02/18'.
Cloudy, pale gold colored body. One finger white head dissipates to island and ring. Leaves a few spots of lacing.
Smells like lemon/lime and tangerine.
Sweeter citrus taste of tangerine and lime. There could be berries but not really identifiable. Supporting malt. Has a little citrus pith bitterness in the after taste.
Thin to medium mouth feel. Good carbonation.
Pleasant session pale ale with a depth of flavors.

Had another 'Guayabera' beer, with a canning date of '08/23/18'.
Pours a two finger white, bubbly head, which quickly reduces to partial cap and thin ring.
Aroma and taste as described before, with tangerine, lime, and berries.
Another pleasant drinking experience, with no change in the rating.

Pours a semi hazy golden orange color which displays some clarity as there is some visible carbonation. A large thumb length foam head features good retention and lots of lathery lacing.
Big citrus aroma, including orange zest, grapefruit pulp, lime. Also, notes of tropical fruit; pineapple, mango and papaya.
Hops flavors of freshly squeezed orange and grapefruit juice, as well as hints of tropical fruit, take center stage. They masterfully interact with an equally important malt presence that evokes cracker and light caramel. The bitterness is subtle and very smooth, aided by the lime lime and light peppery spice middle palate. The finish evokes grapefruit rind and has a moderate to mild bitterness.
Medium bodied, angling towards light, and smooth. Juicy, silky, as well as a strong citrusy zest that tingles the mouth.
Very well done juicy APA that takes elements from NEIPA while still showcasing malts. Great job by an awesome brewery.

Pours a murky golden color, with a 2 finger white frothy head. The retention is quite good, and there's some lacing on the glass.
The nose is really deep and tropical. Way more than a citrus aroma. Hard to describe, but it is a rich aroma.
Taste - This beer is mellow, and it's a lot more mellow than the nose would suggest. Up front it is a smooth, I'd say, not grapefruit, some citrus. Hint of lime, but a citrus I don't know - the can says tangerine. On the backside there is a slight hop bite.
Decent body. Just about right for this style of beer. The hops do linger, and I like it.
Delicious, solid IPA. I almost think this is better than Jai Alai. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome, but this is more approachable than it.
