Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Traditional throughout Latin America, the guayabera shirt combines style, functionality, form and tradition in it’s four-pocketed design. We at Cigar City feel the same reverence and appreciation for the guayabera that we do for the Citra hop varietal, an ingredient that imparts notes of tangerine, lime and berries to this traditional American Pale Ale. The exclusive use of Citra hops in this beer creates a flavor that’s at once unique and recognizable, while it’s dry, crisp character and moderate alcohol make it as refreshing and functional as a crisp linen guayabera.

$10 (Including tax)/six pack of 12 ozers ($ 0.139/oz). Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. Reviewed 7/6/18.
Can marked on bottom “Canned on 05/02/19”. This one was run at Oskar Blues, NC. On shelf at distributor. Stored and served at 42 degrees in a hand-washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 4.
Body – Yellow, hazy, effervescent. When held to the light, translucent.
Head – Large (Maximum 4.8 cm, aggressive center pour), off-white, low density froth, short retention time diminishing to an irregular seven to ten mm lacy ring and thick partial layer. Some tiny islands of lace remain as the head retracts.
Lacing – Good. Complete three-dimensional rings of tiny to medium bubbles.
First pour – Yellow, slight haze.
Aroma – 4 – Grapefruit, weakens but remains.
Flavor – 3.5 - Begins mildly bitter and refreshing but the grapefruit from the nose does not translate to the flavor. A bit of malt is present. It ends with malt and mild bitterness. No alcohol, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3 - Medium, watery, lively carbonation.
Impression and summation – 3.5 – A decent APA with a pleasing malt backbone and good citrus aroma. At 50 IBUs the bitterness is so mild as to be nearly absent. Overall, one I’d drink again if found on tap but not one I’d actively seek out.

This beer pours a slightly hazy orange with an average head. The aroma is classic citra, with loads of grapefruit, orange, guava, mango, and a hint of onion. The flavor is semi sweet, lead by guava, mango, orange peel, grapefruit and a slight grassy bitterness. The mouthfeel is fairly light with fizzy carbonation. Overall this is a stellar beer - a great use of the citra hop to its full extent, full of tropical and citrus tones, with just a hint of oniony grassiness - not in a way that detracts, but in a way that is perfect.

Thick, slowly receding head. Thick initial ring of lace with downward streaks thereafter. The liquid is cloudy with a dirty gold color.

The smell is of freshly opened hop pellets--floral and mildly sweet. There's a solid maltiness to the nose as well. Very attractive.

The malt base never quite makes it through because the hop is surprisingly bitter, but not extreme or overwhelming. Decent body with ample carbonation, this isn't particularly notable. The moderate lasting aftertaste is well balanced with a peppery spice and just a touch of semisweet pale malt.

Can June 2018

Reviews of this beer should be overwhelmingly positive. Super pungent fresh sipping pale, that falls more broadly in the new world juicy IPA category (see MIA MegaMix and CComforts Automatic). Yet another fantastic beer from Cigar City.

Brief impression from a can:

Overcarbonated but drinkable with a pleasant hop profile.

Poured from a 12 ounce can into an IPA glass. It looks golden yellow with a subtle cloudiness and a modest head that left a surprising amount of lacing. It smells like an inviting mix of sweet tropical goodness. The first sip is delicious. It is sweet and fruity with an ever so slight bitterness to the finish. It is very well balanced and an easy drinker. The mouthfeel is just thick enough with not much sticky on the lips. An excellent beer from start to finish.

Look: It pours hazy golden and orange with a pillow white head. Head retention is good.

Smell: The aroma has grassy notes with tangerine. There are secondary notes of lime and berries.

Taste: The lime and citrus are more prominent in the taste with a rind coming in the secondary notes. There are some bready elements with slight tangerine and berries.

Feel: It has a moderate body with a bit of a sharp edge in the finish.

Overall, quite a flavorable beer.

Pouring from a 12 oz. can into a wine glass. This beer pours out a straw/lemon color with a thin white crown. Looks pleasant, almost like a light fruit juice. The smell imparts some citrus along with a very prominent note of berries. The taste is tangy with the citrus notes and then wants to turn into the berry notes but only slightly does. Would love if there were more of them. A straw like dryness on the mouthfeel. Overall, not the best I've had from Cigar city but solid and enjoy it nonetheless.
