Marshal Zhukov's Imperial Stout - Bourbon Barrel AgedMarshal Zhukov's Imperial Stout - Bourbon Barrel Aged
Notes: This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to Georgy Zhukov, arguably one of the finest generals of World War II. Aged in white oak barrels previously used to mature bourbon whiskey, this formidable stout’s dark chocolate flavor and espresso-like roastiness is balanced by flavors of vanilla and a subtle smokiness from extensive barrel aging.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 750 mL bottle into an El Catador Barrel-Aged glass.

A: Very dark brown to black, and opaque. A low amount of visible carbonation, and a finger's worth of tan head that lasts.

S: Bourbon and roasted malts, chocolate and oak. Tannins and roasted char in balance. Vanilla with the dried tobacco. Nice aroma for sure.

T: Chocolate and bourbon together up front. Roasted malts, oak, and vanilla. Baker’s chocolate, dark chocolate, and mild coffee notes. Tobacco and oak tannins provide dryness. Sweet bourbon with more chocolate in the hang.

M: The expected thick slick mouthfeel from anything that says "Zhukov" on the label - very heavy-bodied. The alcohol is certainly obvious but not too hot – they've found a nice barrel balance.

O: Really good. I think I might like this better than the sherry barrel version - but it's likely a toss-up. Very nicely executed.

750ml bottle. Huge bourbon oak on the nose and palate. Full mouthful with a perfect amount of carbonation for this particular beer. Sweet, roasty, charred, bittersweet chocolate and a big warming finish. Fantastic beer! This is a new fresh bottle and it's a little boozy but this thing is going to age magnificently and I can see the overall rating going up by a half point or so to damn near perfect.

Got this one from desp a while back. Cheers, man!

From a 750 into a snifter

APPEARANCE: Thick, dark black pour yields a 3+ finger, medium looking, fizzy, dark mocha colored head with half decent retention. Head fizzes down to a full wisp cap. Pitch black body with no carbonation evident. Touches of wisp and ring remain leaving traces of lacing down the glass. Color is awesome but the head is a little fizzier than I’d like.

SMELL: Huge nose of bourbon, oak, wood, as well as milk chocolate, sweet cream and vanilla aromas. Hints of coconut and pure chocolate show up. Some decent alcohol here as well. Massive and boozy.

TASTE: Roasted malt, pure dark chocolate and sweet molasses from the base beer. The good Marshal. Some rich espresso, as well as some bourbon, sweet cream and vanilla from the barrel aging. Booze as well. More sweet, boozy barrel flavors at the swallow, moving into a big and bold finish of roasted espresso, pure dark chocolate bitterness, sweet molasses, bourbon, alcohol, as well as some sweet vanilla cream and milk chocolate from the barrel aging. A bit of booze lingers as well. This is filthy rich.

PALATE: Full body and slightly lower levels of carbonation. Heavy and silky slick, goes down creamy smooth and finishes quite sticky. Some heat lingers. Thick, heavy, silky and decadent.

OVERALL: This is The Marshal with a little trick up his sleeve. The barrel is full of character and sweet, oaky goodness while the impressive base stout shines through like a beam of light in the abyss. The heavy, slick, silky feel is also as good as it gets for a beer like this. This really is everything I could ever want and more. You spoil me, Florida. Thanks again, desp! Lovely.

Pours a dark black body, oily with a fair bit of leg. One finger offwhite head, good retention, minimal lacing. Again, bit of leg. Smell is bourbon, touch of smoke, tobacco, vanillin, espresso, milk chocolate, cocoa, and even a bit of leather. It's a complex beer and the nose carries on into the flavour, a fairly sweet beer with the rest of the palate not quite standing up to the sweetness. Mild earthy finish. A touch better than the cognac, more complexity and seemingly more complementary with the barrel.

Pours an opaque dark brown almost black like oil with similar viscosity and khaki colored head. Bourbon, oak, vanilla, chocolate, and coffee on the nose; follows onto the palate. Full bodied. Finishes with more bourbon and chocolate.

This is the by far the best and most underrated El Catador club release through the past 4 memberships. Perfect balance of the barrel with the base beer. No adjuncts needed here.

This drinks fantastic right now and will hold up really well. Thick, viscous and the barrel aging is fantastic. Zhukov has been around the block and maybe that's taken some hype off, but this BBA version is a knockout. As good as any beer I had at Huna day as well. Everything you want in a non adjunct stout. A beer lovers dream. Seek it out and let everyone else chase the dark lord variants and cycle bottles

Just fantastic! The base beer of Marshal Zhukov is one I look forward to stocking up on every year, but to enjoy this on-site at the brewery last month was a special treat. Super smooth bourbon flavor with almost no heat, it's exactly the kind of balanced BA stout you would expect from Cigar City.

Pours somewhat motor oil like with a dark khaki head that quickly dissipates and leaves a ring around the edge of the glass. Smell is super boozy with raisin and red fruit notes. A very hot beer that also gives you vanilla and bourbon from the barrels. Taste is very reminiscent of the smell with raisin, red fruit, and booze predominating. Feel is thick and silky. Overall this beer is great with a massive amount of body, nose, and taste. It is very hot and young and evidenced by the boozy notes and the red fruit flavors. This could use some time to mellow out but is excellent nonetheless.

there are many things in the beer world that I do not of those things being the sudden lack of hype train interest in some of Florida's best breweries. the El catador club beers is one such phenomenon. whilst I understand that every brew released via this club was not a slam dunk, surely you'd expect some more hoopla around the bourbon barrel aged version of one of cigar city's best beers (and imo one of the best stouts around in general). that said, it made trading for this a fairly low effort endeavor making me skeptical if my logic senses were off in thinking that bourbon barrel aged zhukov would be worth trying...but alas, mistaken I was NOT. this bad boy is as good as you could imagine. w so many thinner BA stouts coming out of FL these days, nice to see something w balls and majestic flavoring all rolled into one. this is a homerun.

Huge molasses and dark fruits with big bourbon and licorice. Oak. Caramel, chocolate, toffee.

This is thick and rich. Very impressed with this one.

750 mL bottle. Pours inky black with just a few mocha bubbles. Smells nutty and oaky. Sharp bourbon. Chocolate. Smells boozy. Tastes of bourbon, oak, dark chocolate. Heavy roasted malts with just as much sweetness and some dark fruits, too. Boozy and oaky finish. Heavy, as expected. I didn't expect this to be my style. Perhaps it still isn't my style, but it's tasty.

One of the El Cat beers I've looked forward to the most, because this beer 'plain' is one of the best stouts on the planet. 750ML history-soaked bottle split with my wife....I know how to get to her on Valentine's Day!

Black, with quick-collapse brown head. The nose brings deep, dark, sweet chocolate, roasted malts for days, along with a small whiff of bourbon. Smells like moist anticipation.

Marshal Zhukov's - Bourbon Barrel Aged can hardly improve on the nearly perfect base...can it? Nicely, the barrels do not drown out the essential beauty of the base: chocolate, dragon-charred roast, lightless sweets. The barrels impart a gentle vanilla & heady bourbon that brings a bit of spiciness (rye whiskey?). Marshmallows? Supremely creamy, thick, & decadent in that trademark Cigar City fashion. I could easily have drunk the entire bottle. I might do that with the second one. Wonder if my wife knows I have two...

Borderline perfect, just like the base, but with a lovely added barrel kick. An elite beer.

750mL bottle acquired through the El Catador Club. No bottling date, released late November 2016. Served in a Cigar City teku.

Pours oil black with two and a half fingers of rich mocha head. That deep froth eventually dies down completely, with only a broken rail around the edges to show as any retention.

Sweet, beckoning aromas of vanilla, bourbon, chocolate, caramel, faint raisin toast and some infrequent whiffs of fuesel alcohol. This smells great.

The delicious flavor trip starts with a hefty reminder of the booze. The nip of alcohol is broken by bourbon, molasses, dark chocolate cake, coffee, cooked caramel, wet charred oak, vanilla, brown sugar and a hint of pine. It all works very well together to create excellent flavor.

Decadent, creamy, full, coating body with pleasantly subdued carbonation. The aftertaste is reminiscent of boozey bourbon-soaked dark chocolate fudgey cake.

For years Marshall Zhukov has been one of my favorite Russian imperial stouts. This bourbon barrel aged variant is a real treat. Simply outstanding work from Cigar City that I'm happy to have tried.

Not much nose but really well done. Bourbon comes through with a semi sweet body. Light roast. Balanced body with some chocolate sweetness that lifts the bourbon character to the forefront.
