This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to Georgy Zhukov, arguably one of the finest generals of World War II. Aged in white oak barrels previously used to mature bourbon whiskey, this formidable stout’s dark chocolate flavor and espresso-like roastiness is balanced by flavors of vanilla and a subtle smokiness from extensive barrel aging.

Bottled 10/18/18. Cellared. Poured at 55°. Dark brown/almost black with ruby edges; dark tan head; poor cap retention; thin ring and a few spots with heavy legs on swirl. Roast malt, almost smokey barrel char. Burnt molasses, bitter roast (70 IBU)bittersweet dark chocolate; oak with a touch of vanilla middle; not sweet; barrel char linger. Smooth feel; medium body; moderate minus carbonation; some warmth from 11.8% abv; dry oaky finish. Overall sublime; a non-adjuncty BBA treat true to style. Sad to see this beer “retired”.

Pours dark black. Aroma dominated by roasted malts and bourbon. Taste is more complex - well balanced, smooth combination of chocolate (milk and hints of dark), bourbon, roasted malts, vanilla and a hint of coffee. Wonderfully smooth, balance of the bourbon Thick feel. Incredible stout.

I buy it when I can find it. Then I hoard it until just the right moment. Great beer and just by a little edge better with bourbon bbl aged

Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 750 mL bottle into an El Catador Barrel-Aged glass.
A: Very dark brown to black, and opaque. A low amount of visible carbonation, and a finger's worth of tan head that lasts.
S: Bourbon and roasted malts, chocolate and oak. Tannins and roasted char in balance. Vanilla with the dried tobacco. Nice aroma for sure.
T: Chocolate and bourbon together up front. Roasted malts, oak, and vanilla. Baker’s chocolate, dark chocolate, and mild coffee notes. Tobacco and oak tannins provide dryness. Sweet bourbon with more chocolate in the hang.
M: The expected thick slick mouthfeel from anything that says "Zhukov" on the label - very heavy-bodied. The alcohol is certainly obvious but not too hot – they've found a nice barrel balance.
O: Really good. I think I might like this better than the sherry barrel version - but it's likely a toss-up. Very nicely executed.
