Appearance - The beer poured a deep black with dark brown bubbles crowning the glass.

Smell - The beer had a nice rich boozy nose.

Taste - At the front, was rich chocolate with mellow spices. The booze is nicely mellowed iand does not overwhelm the chocolate. In fact, the whiskey is somewhat sweet

Mouthfeel - The feel is full with mellow carbonation.

Overall - Though nothing jumps off the chart about this one, it’s a nice beer

Bottled 08/08/16, pours pitch black color with a foamy tan head that faded slowly and left really good foamy lacing.

Smells of bakers chocolate, rye, peppery spices, roasted grains, peat moss, chicory, brown sugar, plum and chocolate liqueur. Nice mix of sweetness, spices and mild roasted notes.

Tastes of dark chocolate, rye, whiskey, peat moss, milk chocolate, toffee, raisin, butterscotch, roasted grains, burnt coffee grinds, dark fruits, caramel, brown sugar, buttered pumpernickel bread and tea leaf or peppery spices as it fades. Hides the ABV well and was very smooth for an imperial stout with a little bite. A nice spin on a big, bold stout.

Stark black--you know how CCB do--with a dense, two finger mocha head that retains for a good while then settles to a dark film.

Smell is magnificent. Fudge, toasted marshmallow, waxy walnut and nutty oak with a hint of spicy rye whiskey spiked chocolate bars. A touch of sticky maple emerges as it warms.

Taste impresses even more, hitting much the same notes as the nose, and adding a little tanginess with some round heat that never interferes with the flavor. The caraway and rye whiskey really provide a lot more character and unique spice than I've ever gotten out of a rye whiskey barrel aged beer, with a little charred oak, date and roasted nuts in the finish. I even get flavors of Kahlua at times. Some smokey molasses emerges as it warms, and within that, a hint of cherry.

Thick and expertly carbonated, Dioscorides has a really luxurious feel with a waxy, nutty finish.

750mL bottle acquired through the El Catador Club. Bottled 8/8/16. Served in a Cigar City teku.

Pours black with just over two fingers of mocha head. The dense froth recedes to a frothy layer and full collar, leaving some nice curtains of lace.

Aromas of dark chocolate, cooked sugar, whiskey and wet oak.

Even eight months after bottling, the flavor comes on strong with alcohol heat. Whiskey, grainy burnt toast, dark cocoa, rye-like spice, wet charred wood, earth and plenty of booze.

Smooth, medium full feel with restrained carbonation. Aftertaste is rye stout with a healthy dose of whiskey barrel.

Another solid stout from Cigar City, Dioscorides brings an interesting new rye dimension to their consistently impressive stout game.

Overall a very unique tasting beer. It definitely has some great flavors in there, plus the richness that accompanies a CCB stout, but it maybe just had something a little extra that tasted off. Couldn't quite put my finger on it. I'd still down another bottle in an instant to try to figure out what it was though.
