Very Good
Space PopeSpace Pope
Notes: Is the Space Pope reptilian? That question remains to be answered, but in the meantime, we have his eponymous IPA to consider. Brewed with an astronomical amount of Mosaic, Citra, CTZ and (what else?) Galaxy hops that lend notes of passionfruit and melon to the clean flavors of base malt and a touch of crystal malt for depth of character. When your ecclesiastical jurisdiction encompasses the entire universe, only Cigar City's Space Pope IPA will do!

355 ml can, from Vinmonopolet (Kvadrat or Nettbutikken). ABV is 7.2%, IBUs 45. Hops are Mosaic, Citra, Hallertau Blanc and Galaxy. Moderately hazy golden colour, moderate white head. Aroma of tropical fruits and crushed grapes, hints of sweat. Flavour of citrus, tropical fruits and pine needles, decent bittering hops.

Palate Contaminants: peppery pasta and a chocolate chip cookie

Moderately opaque with a really nice amber color. Good amount of very fine white head, as well as a moderate amount of lacing. Pretty much what I think a nice IPA should look like.

On the nose, sharp pine resin. Moderately acidic and very sweet pineapple. Very light lactose. Could stand to be a bit stronger.

Taste is like a forest floor. Mossy/grassy, with some bark flavor. As it warms up, there's more wood. Fruit taste is buried pretty well, and yeah, it's still citrus, but I can't tell which one. Bitterness is moderate.

Aftertaste is about the same as the taste, although the bitter character is stronger. Alcohol is detectable, and it would be fine if the fruit flavor or something else were there to compete. Carbonation is fine and smooth.

Citra, Mosaic, CTZ, Galaxy

Mar 10 canning - 5 wks, which is remarkably fresh for a Transatlantic import. Unfortunately, that doesn’t equal big hop flavour, nor does it match the ABV or the hop bill. Hops are the mean side of Citra + the savoury side of Mosaic, all sharp edges.
This is the light malt, low bitterness (45 IBUs), fruity, + strong school of IPAs, a la Voodoo Ranger, but that only works if you bring the buds. As it is, there is nothing else going on, especially in the body, which is dangerously thin.
I’m especially not sure what Galaxy is bringing here because this could actually use the big, blousy tropical notes that usually make this hop so overpowering.

Reviews as recently as last year mention Hallertau Blanc - did this recipe change?
If so, based on previous reviews, it’s for the worse.

With a hop combination that's simply not fair, Cigar City resists the haze and embraces the bitter. With a base taste that circulates around the Columbus-Tomahawk-Zeus hop combination, they also employ the international cheat code of Citra-Mosaic- Galaxy for a beer that's out of this world.

Bright in a golden pour, the modestly hazy Space Pope builds a creamy ivory froth before hitting the senses with a fruity, tropical, citrusy scent laced with herb and pine. A crisp malt sweetness introduces to the palate with hints of honey, light caramel and gently toasted wafer.

But the stars of its taste are the hops that share a generous fruitiness of orange, lime and grapefruit with a more tropical lead of passionfruit, pineapple and green papaya. As hints of berry, lemon and wine ebb and flow throughout the session, there's always that backdrop of bitter resins that add a piney, peppery and grassy bitterness that only grows as the session closes.

Medium bodied and trending dry, the work of alcohol and hop resins only aid the bitterness and crispness in a way that's seldom seen in the contemporary beer aisle. It finishes earthy, dank, grassy and sprucy with a refreshing, off-clean hop spice and a long linger of pithy resins. It's a classic American IPA with a modern tilt and is simply a beer that's both heavenly and out of this world.

Attractive clear amber appearance, large white head, good lacing. Hop-centric aroma striking notes of citrus, soft fruit and tropical fruit. Settles nicely on the taste buds, bitter but not in a way that is off-putting. Citrus stays firmly in control well into the aftertaste. Dry, acerbic, lasting finish.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a red wine glass. No date on the can, but it's been in my fridge for months, so it could be aged more than is optimal for an IPA.

L - Straw-colored beer; hazy. White head is not too tall, but has a thick, rocky appearance; fairly persistent and leaves solid lace on the glass.

S - Strong hops aromas of citrus and tropical fruit. Malt is only present as a vague sweet note. Clean fermentation with no yeast character.

T - Tropical fruit hops are at the forefront of the flavors. Mid-palate is a bit muddled and then there is sweet malt that fades into an off-dry finish.

F - Medium body; low to moderate carbonation. Slightly creamy mouthfeel. Hops bitterness could be described as medium at the most, surprisingly low for an IPA. Low to medium alcohol presence.

O - For me this is a disappointing IPA. Certainly not a crisp West Coast hop bomb, but neither is it truly a NEIPA. I'd call it closer to an American Pale Ale, but it is not a great example of that, either. This is the first time I've not been impressed by a Cigar City beer. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for an aged example and it certainly doesn't hurt my overall positive opinion of the brewery.

Poured a seethru straw-gold body with one-finger head and then left a lace ring down the glass. The aroma is classic hop presence of grass and citrus. Smooth beer with a medium body, slight malt stickiness and good balance in this beer, has some grass notes and finishes dry and overall very easy to drink.

Space Pope pours a hazy bright golden color, with a small, but long lasting lacing head. Big tropical fruit aroma. Flavor is sweet and smooth, lots of tropical fruit, with a great hoppy, bitter finish. Good body and feel. Overall, very solid IPA, sweet and bitter, well balanced, with great strong flavors.

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) can into a conical pint glass; canned on 04/11/20, code DENEB.
A: Pours a clear, hazy dark golden color with foamy, white colored head, cap retention, but somewhat spotty lacing.
S: Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, cocoa, caramel, cracker, and eucalyptus. Plastic/Band-Aid® note, as it warms.
T: Semisweet. The palate certainly follow the nose with the plastic coming on strong at the end without necessarily detracting (I may just be sensitive. Moderate bitterness.
M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
O: I was really excited about this from pour through nose, less no with consumption, but still a solid American IPA. Deneb is in the constellation Cygnus (the Swan) and part of the so-call Summer Triangle; I suppose that is the "space" element.

L:. Pours a hazy dull golden orange with a very foamy white head and no lacing.

S:. Lots of tropical fruit, including a very strong punch of pineapple followed by orange but other than that most of it is muddled.

T:. Lots of ripe tropical fruit including pineapple and lemon rind, a very light bitterness. It's tropical and juicy but it all kinda just blends together.

F:. Smooth creamy body and medium feel.

O:. This is a very average hazy IPA.

Hazy and golden with a fading off white head, this beer looks decent. Potent citrus and pineapple/ tropical nose to this beer, again nice. Flavor translated from the nose pretty well with the tropical flavors mixing with a slight sticky bitterness. Medium carbonation with a sticky bitter feel and oh so slight heat.

L: Light, creamy orange-golden pale and completely hazy. Thin head that laces the edges.
S: Not particularly powerful but cirtus and soapy? Hop-forward and rich malt sweetness.
T: Orange and tangerine peel and medium bitterness but not overwhelming. Not a ton of sweetness, but is kinda like an orange creamsicle.
F: Medium to heavier bodied and mild carbonation.

Cigar City don't miss.

Glad to finally Poured from a can into a tulip.

Pours lightly hazed medium gold with a good foamy head and enduring lacing.

Vague tropical aromas mix with orange and pine resin.

Caramel malts are very present and forward on the tip of the tongue. Citrus flesh, zest, and pith all arrive in midstream. The brew closes with resin and white pepper. The ABV is well hidden.

The brew is medium bodied. Well carbonated and not crisp, but drying.

A solid IPA. Not Jai Alai, but tasty.

12oz can poured in to a nonic glass.

Look- Hazy golden amber color. Large off-white head that recedes slowly to a thin cap of foam, solid lacing. Moderate carbonation streams visible.

Smell- Big tropical fruit (pineapple, papaya and mango), melon, citrus (orange/tangerine, grapefruit and lemon), peach/nectarine, green grape, bready malt, faint pine and floral/grassy hop notes.

Taste- Similar to the aroma, tropical fruit, citrus, nectarine and melon, a bit of green grape skin, light pine, lingering aggressively bitter finish . Fairly well balanced.

Feel- Medium bodied, dry and crisp. Moderate carbonation on the tongue.

O- A very solid IPA, somewhere between a WC IPA and a NE hazy. Worth checking out.

I've had so many IPAs (and it's not even my favorite style) that they all are beginning to taste the same, but this one was definitely unique...

Great hazy look for an IPA with a bright-white, frothy head, and a smell that was all juicy, sweet, and simply enjoyable. Mouthfeel, though carbonated, was not distracting at all, and the smell of sweet juiciness translated perfectly to the taste. Truly a distinct offering from the style - something that sets itself beyond others in the field. Another great job from CC.

Included in a 12 pack variety box I had delivered from my local beer store while under Coronavirus quarantine:

Brewed with Mosaic, Citra, Hallertau Blanc and Galaxy hops.

Hop profile isn't anything special, with Hallertau Blanc taking a backseat to this beer's dominant vague tropical fruit character. It's dry and unrefreshing. Lacks Citra's clean citrus and Mosaic's subtle blueberry flavours, but I guess it somewhat delivers on the desirable traits of Galaxy in that there's some passionfruit flavour.

12 oz can with a 19 January 2020 BB date stamp on the bottom of the can.
Pours with a hazy golden-amber body topped with a decent white head that leaves ample lacing on the glass.
The aroma is somewhat dank despite a mix of citrus juice and citrus peel notes, including both organ and tangerine. The flavor follows, but with less orange and more passionfruit. Moderate bitterness for style but the flavor is, perhaps, a touch stronger than average.
Medium body and carbonation.

Poured into a Duchesse de Biurgogne glass. Space pope is extremely hoppy and quite bitter, which is what it says on the bottle, so I can't fault it for that. It does quite a good job at what it's meant to do, however. Carbonation is fairly low in this IPA, and it's not particularly fragrant. But if you're into discerning different shades of hopps in your IPA, it's got plenty to work with. Overall, it's not my type of an IPA as I prefer something as Goose Island Next Coast IPA, but it's a matter of preference. Gotta love the name though.

A: Poured into Teku glass. Golden orange body with a bubble white head that dissipated quickly to a slight white rim of small bubbles on the outer edge.

S: Sharp aroma of citrus: grapefruit rind and orange. Some bitter melon and pine.

T/MF: Getting some bitter grapefruit and citrus up front with a juicy hop pine in the middle. That being said there's a nice dryness to this in the finish that makes drinking this one easy.

O: This is a fairly decent offering from CCB, however this one is a little underwhelming, hop-wise, for an IPA. I would like to have seen a little bit more from the hop bill. I would definitely choose the Jai Alai or Guayabera before this one though. It's not a bad beer, I was just expecting more.
