Very Good
Space PopeSpace Pope
Notes: Is the Space Pope reptilian? That question remains to be answered, but in the meantime, we have his eponymous IPA to consider. Brewed with an astronomical amount of Mosaic, Citra, CTZ and (what else?) Galaxy hops that lend notes of passionfruit and melon to the clean flavors of base malt and a touch of crystal malt for depth of character. When your ecclesiastical jurisdiction encompasses the entire universe, only Cigar City's Space Pope IPA will do!

With a hop combination that's simply not fair, Cigar City resists the haze and embraces the bitter. With a base taste that circulates around the Columbus-Tomahawk-Zeus hop combination, they also employ the international cheat code of Citra-Mosaic- Galaxy for a beer that's out of this world.

Bright in a golden pour, the modestly hazy Space Pope builds a creamy ivory froth before hitting the senses with a fruity, tropical, citrusy scent laced with herb and pine. A crisp malt sweetness introduces to the palate with hints of honey, light caramel and gently toasted wafer.

But the stars of its taste are the hops that share a generous fruitiness of orange, lime and grapefruit with a more tropical lead of passionfruit, pineapple and green papaya. As hints of berry, lemon and wine ebb and flow throughout the session, there's always that backdrop of bitter resins that add a piney, peppery and grassy bitterness that only grows as the session closes.

Medium bodied and trending dry, the work of alcohol and hop resins only aid the bitterness and crispness in a way that's seldom seen in the contemporary beer aisle. It finishes earthy, dank, grassy and sprucy with a refreshing, off-clean hop spice and a long linger of pithy resins. It's a classic American IPA with a modern tilt and is simply a beer that's both heavenly and out of this world.

12 oz can from sampler pack. Bright, clear golden, small lasting creamy head. Aroma is piney with light caramel. Taste is grainy, toffee, with a sharp bitter bite.

Light haze in this amber-gold colored liquid. The head is frothy and leaves a considerable lace. The aroma has some pine and fresh flower notes. Nice balance, with firm pale malt flavor. Some cracker and bettering hops. Full body. Not bad.

12 oz can, about 1.5 months old. Pours a murky yellow/orange with a rocky off-white head. Aroma and flavor are bursting with melon and tropical fruit flavor. Low bitterness. I would love to try this even fresher. Very impressive for a mass-distributed beer - reminds me of the best of the Firestone Walker Luponic Distortion series.

L:. Pours a hazy dull golden orange with a very foamy white head and no lacing.

S:. Lots of tropical fruit, including a very strong punch of pineapple followed by orange but other than that most of it is muddled.

T:. Lots of ripe tropical fruit including pineapple and lemon rind, a very light bitterness. It's tropical and juicy but it all kinda just blends together.

F:. Smooth creamy body and medium feel.

O:. This is a very average hazy IPA.

Appearance: Pours a completely hazy, medium, dull orange color. It illuminates in the light with a lighter head that fades quickly. (3.75)
Aroma: Huge aromas of pineapple and grapefruit citrus. Then comes a strong tropical melon. Then comes a powerful dank, Mosaic berry & black tea bitterness. Some lychee and gooseberry to envelope it all. (4.0)
Flavor: On the tongue at first it follows the aroma with strong pineapple and grapefruit flavors. Then some galaxy passionfruit. But it skips the tropical melon and goes straight to a lychee, gooseberry, and tea flavor that is surrounded by a crystal malt sweetness. Not too bitter, Relatively sweet for an IPA. Mosaic profile but then a definite pale, galaxy sweetness, Blind, I would have guessed there's some Nelson Sauvin, but I guess it's the Hallertau blanc that gives it the unique flavor. (4.0)
Feel: Clean and crisp. Medium carbonation. Lighter bodied. Slight crystal malt sweetness left on the tongue. (3.75)

Overall: I suppose this would fit more in a midwest or even English IPA category. It has the dank, tropical, and even berry flavors, but then leans a lychee flavor and crystal malt sweetness through the end. Midwest hop flavors, but then a sweeter NW galaxy malt profile. Definitely unique and if I want a berry or New Zealand flavor to an IPA, this one is worth picking up. (Final Rating: 3.96)

Had this beer from the can about 4 weeks old. Assuming this is on the tail end of freshness for a hoppy cigar city beer.

Aroma is very citrusy. Taste hits you upfront with the pop of citrus, but then fades into a high bitter finish with some metallic bitter linger. Also feels a touch "hop watery" thin despite the 7%ABV and needs a little more malt or body to balance the hops out some. Its an ok IPA, but with the high bitterness its not one I'd drink on the regular.

Included in a 12 pack variety box I had delivered from my local beer store while under Coronavirus quarantine:

Brewed with Mosaic, Citra, Hallertau Blanc and Galaxy hops.

Hop profile isn't anything special, with Hallertau Blanc taking a backseat to this beer's dominant vague tropical fruit character. It's dry and unrefreshing. Lacks Citra's clean citrus and Mosaic's subtle blueberry flavours, but I guess it somewhat delivers on the desirable traits of Galaxy in that there's some passionfruit flavour.

Poured into a Duchesse de Biurgogne glass. Space pope is extremely hoppy and quite bitter, which is what it says on the bottle, so I can't fault it for that. It does quite a good job at what it's meant to do, however. Carbonation is fairly low in this IPA, and it's not particularly fragrant. But if you're into discerning different shades of hopps in your IPA, it's got plenty to work with. Overall, it's not my type of an IPA as I prefer something as Goose Island Next Coast IPA, but it's a matter of preference. Gotta love the name though.
