Apple Brandy Barrel-aged Imperial Stout with Berries

“If many believe it, it must be so.” That’s the succinct way to describe argumentum ad populum, an argumentative fallacy found often in both classical logic discussions and internet beer forums. Being amateur classicists ourselves, we at Cigar City Brewing avoid fueling fallacious arguments about anything, be it epistemology, idealism or barrel-aged beer. We present this apple brandy barrel-aged stout brewed with marionberries and black raspberries as a liquid monument to the dangers of fallacious arguments, both online and off.

The beer pours viscous and dark brown from the bottle. A finger of pretty densely packed, espresso foam colored head settles down to a thin layer across the top of the beer. Nearly black and opaque in the glass. No lacing with this 13.7% beer and no visible carbonation.

The aroma is big, roasty, earthy and inching toward umami. Black coffee. I’m loving what I’m getting so far. It’s got that aged Zhukov thing going on aromatically, which I absolutely love. Red apple, oak, and some fresh, dark berry aroma. Warming nose at 13.7%.

The taste is nice. On the tip of the tongue some sweet berry and chocolate. Mid palate some berry tartness and bitterness. A bit gritty and tannic grape skin thing going on. It’s has a red wine thing going on. Red apple and a lot of apple skin. The finish is long and dries out some with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee bean. There is some slight oxidation but no where near the level that turns me off.

The feel is a bit gritty and tannic. A lot of woody oak. Medium level of carbonation. Semi-dry.

No idea what this beer was like fresh. It’s pretty interesting with almost three years on it. Quite complex. I’m enjoying it a lot. I tend to drink quickly. This one is not the most drinkable beer I’ve had. But it’s a really nice, complex sipper

750ml bottle at share. Slick black pour, ring of brown head. Sweet aroma, molasses, chocolate, coffee. Taste also comes in sweet, pancake syrup, fruit notes, vanilla, bourbon. Thick and rich.

Rarely have Apple Brandy barrels ever been filled with an appropriate beer.
Though it has no actual wine component, I feel this is the flavor many wine/beer hybrids are aiming for.
Probably my favorite CCB beer since DB Huna.

750 mL bottle. Inky black. Smells a bit metallic up front. Smells of licorice, chocolate, a hint of berry and slight oak. Tastes of oak, roasted malt, fudge, something like brandy. Again, the berry is faint. And again, still a little metallic. Heavy. Pretty sweet, but not that sweet by Cigar City stout standards. Enjoyable overall.

In my snifter the beer was black with some red in it when held up to the light. There was a halo of a tan head.
Very boozy aroma. Sweet fruit. A little chocolate.
Taste followed the nose. Brandy and berries. Chocolate in the background.
Heavy-bodied, a sipper for sure.
Not bad, but a little too boozy for me.

A: Poured into a snifter to a deep black beer topped by a miniscule light tan head which fades quickly into the ether with no lacing.
S: Smells of berries and brandy, oak, roasted malts, and a little bit of chocolate
T: Taste is sweet berries up front with some brandy barrel sweetness, oak, cocoa powder, roasted malts, and some slight coffee. The berry addition keeps coming around along with the brandy barrel. Swallow is more berries, dry oak, chocolate, roasted malts, hint of smoke, and a little coffee
M: This beer is very full in body with a silky mouthfeel. Carbonation is low but adequate for the style while the beer has a drying finish.
O: Overall this is a really interesting beer. The fruit and the barrel are very forward which is nice but the base beer struggles to come to the party. Definitely happy to try it and worth the experiment. Price is a little high but in line with CCB pricing.
