Apple Brandy Barrel-aged Imperial Stout with Berries

“If many believe it, it must be so.” That’s the succinct way to describe argumentum ad populum, an argumentative fallacy found often in both classical logic discussions and internet beer forums. Being amateur classicists ourselves, we at Cigar City Brewing avoid fueling fallacious arguments about anything, be it epistemology, idealism or barrel-aged beer. We present this apple brandy barrel-aged stout brewed with marionberries and black raspberries as a liquid monument to the dangers of fallacious arguments, both online and off.

In my snifter the beer was black with some red in it when held up to the light. There was a halo of a tan head.
Very boozy aroma. Sweet fruit. A little chocolate.
Taste followed the nose. Brandy and berries. Chocolate in the background.
Heavy-bodied, a sipper for sure.
Not bad, but a little too boozy for me.

750ml bottle poured into an El Catador snifter. Bottling date of 05/02/17 etched on the neck of the bottle. The berries come through pronounced in the nose combining with the apple brandy barrels to create a nice mouthwatering fruity aroma. The taste features a lingering tartness, moderate sweetness, and a lot of warmth in the finish from the high ABV. There is a lingering medicinal bitterness/warmth in the finish that I feel detracts from the brew. In my opinion, this beer is nowhere near its peak fresh and could use some time to smooth out.

750 mL bottle. Inky black. Smells a bit metallic up front. Smells of licorice, chocolate, a hint of berry and slight oak. Tastes of oak, roasted malt, fudge, something like brandy. Again, the berry is faint. And again, still a little metallic. Heavy. Pretty sweet, but not that sweet by Cigar City stout standards. Enjoyable overall.

750ml bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours a thick and viscous syrupy jet black color with a razor thin khaki head that has short retention

S- dark berries on the nose up front with undertones of apple brandy, dark malt & chocolate

T- very sweet and malty up front, almost cloying, followed by a nice kick of raspberries that pops through. Mid-palate brings out a strong brandy note with a hint of green apple skin. The finish is boozy and sweet and linger of brandy and berries

M- heavy body with moderate carbonation leads to a creamy and viscous mouthfeel and a thick and velvety finish

O- the brandy and berries are definitely there but it's so sweet as it goes along. Reminds me of a Bruery beer with the sweetness

A: Poured into a snifter to a deep black beer topped by a miniscule light tan head which fades quickly into the ether with no lacing.
S: Smells of berries and brandy, oak, roasted malts, and a little bit of chocolate
T: Taste is sweet berries up front with some brandy barrel sweetness, oak, cocoa powder, roasted malts, and some slight coffee. The berry addition keeps coming around along with the brandy barrel. Swallow is more berries, dry oak, chocolate, roasted malts, hint of smoke, and a little coffee
M: This beer is very full in body with a silky mouthfeel. Carbonation is low but adequate for the style while the beer has a drying finish.
O: Overall this is a really interesting beer. The fruit and the barrel are very forward which is nice but the base beer struggles to come to the party. Definitely happy to try it and worth the experiment. Price is a little high but in line with CCB pricing.

750mL bottle acquired through the El Catador Club. Bottled 5/2/17. Served in a Cigar City teku. Enjoyed 8/24/17.

Pours with an obvious rose tint but rests in the glass midnight black with a full two and a half fingers of tan head. The bubbles shrink but a hazy layer easily returns with a quick swirl. The rocky crown leaves a few sparce patches of lace.

The nose is sweet and inviting. Apple brandy, earthy tart berries, chocolate syrup, wet vanilla-tinged oak and caramel.

Tastes of brandy-soaked dark chocolate fudge, candied apple skins, blackberry jam, cooked sugar, molasses, oaky vanilla, chocolate liqueur and some alcohol. It's delicious enough that any alcohol is negligible and sure doesn't slow the desire to keep sipping.

Lush, velvety full feel with fluffy carbonation. The sweet aftertaste hold notes of dark chocolate syrup, jam and oak-kissed brandy.

More excellent work with both stouts and barrels from Cigar City. The apple brandy worked in a way that bourbon would not have in its partnership with the distinct berries. A delightful combination that I'm happy to have tried.
