750 mL bottle. Black body. Smells of strong bourbon. Some oak. Licorice and molasses. Tastes of bourbon up front and throughout. Acidic raspberry. Molasses and some roasted malt. Not that sweet. Heavy. Surprisingly drinkable, though. Not bad.

Slappy black with a moderate, creamy matte brown head settling to a thin film with a creamy thick collar.

Smell is waxy, maple-esque oak with a dark, nutty and cocoa-forward malt that brings to mind Tootsie Roll, and an intriguing, barely popping hint of raspberry.

Thankfully this is a lot better than its base, which I found too medicinal. This has more Stout up front with a formidable bourbon oak presence. I'm getting prune, raisin and other dark fruits in the oak, and a mild bourbon flavor without the heat, as a chocolatey and nutty roasted malt is hit with a faint accent of sweet raspberry. Hints of molasses and maple arise as it warms.

The medium-full body has a soft, frothy carbonation, and a slightly stinging, semi-dry finish.

Deep brown color. Mild head. Smell is roasted malts and some raspberry fruit. Flavor is malts, chocolate, moderate barrel and raspberry. Unlike a lot of fruited stouts, the fruit is not over the top. Overall, this is pretty tasty.

750ml bottle poured into an El Catador snifter. Bottling date of 08/08/17 etched on the neck of the bottle.

I was not a huge fan of the regular lower ABV and non-barrel aged Raspberry Halo when it was released, but I have not had a bad El Catador beer yet so I'm sure the barrel aging process is going to make a huge difference.

The nose has HUGE barrel notes of bourbon and oak. The raspberry notes in the nose are there but not as predominant as the regular Raspberry Halo which I consider a plus. Smells fantastic!

The taste like the aroma is sweet, boozy, tons of barrel character and a touch of tartness from the raspberries in the finish to balance out the sweetness. There is a lot of medicinal warmth in the finish but that is to be expected considering the 13.6% ABV and the warmer temperature I'm drinking this at.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot more than expected and think it is an excellent beer. This one picked up a lot of bourbon notes from the time spent in the barrels which makes it a winner for me.

Moderate pour yields a 1/2 inch reddish tan head over a dark brown body with some lacing. Nose of dark fruit, dark malt, and chocolate. Taste of raspberry, bourbon, and chocolate. Good feel and overall a fine offering from CCB.

750ML El Cat bottle with the new, one-size-fits-all labels, split with my wife. Who promptly demanded a full accounting of the pours; turned out I shorted her about 1/3 of an ounce. Bad husband.

Black. Looks like it wants to punch me. I get that a lot. The nose brings enough raspberry, & almost nothing else, to make me wonder if it’s foreshadowing of a fruity mess. Fruit. That’s all.

Raspberry Halo – Bourbon Barrel Aged is like pouring raw alcohol directly onto your cerebral cortex. Slash-and-burn alcohol obscures the other aspects until I can get my brain to stop bouncing around in my pan. The raspberry is subtle enough not to engage my reflexive hatred of fruited stouts, & it’s bound up tightly with a heavy bourbon slap. Thick sweet malts, touch of chocolate, almost finishes like molasses. Going down easy enough that I might have to set the alarm for noon tomorrow.

A mind-altering beer that could be used as a substitute for 5W30. And hoping for greatness, braced for revulsion, this one falls in between. A very good beer.
