El Catador Club 11th edition, Bottle #2
Bourbon Barrel-aged Black Barleywine-Style Ale

English toffee, baker’s chocolate, and figs greet the nose, with tobacco and toasted oak making intermittent aromatic appearances. Rich and velvety on the tongue, distinct flavors of milk chocolate, honey, dates, and almonds meld seamlessly with American whiskey qualities and a hint of smoke adding depth of complexity to this uncommon approach to the classic American barleywine.

El Cat Club Series #11, which hasn’t provided me with the George Michael “Faith” experience I’m seeking yet. 750ML bottle split with my wife.

I’ve had a bit of experience with black barleywines (most frequently Steel Toe’s excellent Before the Dawn) & the thing that can mess them up is a heavy roast presence. This one is certainly dark in appearance, the nose sweet malts & barrel. As advertised

Stakhanov’s Barleywine – what is with the Cigar City Russian themes? Curious fans want to know. First I must say, this is an odd beer in an unusual style. The malts lean hard into dark fruits marinated in a bowl of brown sugar, stone cherries being prominent. The barrel makes itself known mid-palate with a dose of booziness, harsh bourbon rising into my central sulcus, which subsides into a smooth, refined, cognac finish. Full. The combo of harsh/smooth is ringing my bell & I need to control my hand as it creeps repeatedly to the glass.

Unique, tasty, complex, contradictory. This is what El Cat should often look like. Excellent beer.

750ml bottle with the bottling date of 10/28/19 etched on the neck. Bottle #374/1000 - part of the 11th edition of the El Catador Club. This is a bourbon-barrel aged “black” Barleywine. Interesting.

Pours a very dark brown color with light tan colored head. Nice bourbon barrel characteristics on the nose. The taste is sweet, boozy, full of malty goodness. Overall, really tasty!
