Notes: El Catador Club 11th Edition, bottle #4

Bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout with coffee, cinnamon, vanilla, cacao nibs, and chile peppers.

This imperial stout has been brewed to honor Ahaltocob, a demon inhabitant of the netherworld in Mayan mythology. Cinnamon, vanilla, cacao, and chile pepper additions meet coffee and bourbon barrels in a demonically delectable imperial stout worthy of “The Stabbing Demon” himself.

Tasting Notes:
Baking spices, dark chocolate, and bourbon-soaked oak are evoked in the beer’s aroma, with roasted coffee and alcohol spiciness intermingling. A huge wallop of chocolate-covered espresso bean flavor on the palate cedes to blackstrap molasses and rum cake notes, while Scoville heat builds with each sip.

More Cigar City! 750ML bottle (316/1000) that would make a fine weapon against the Walking Dead. Well, at least for one. Split with my wife.

Black. Ever been in under a canoe in a wilderness at midnight? Like that. The nose is cinnamon & Belgian chocolate. Evidently the barrel is hiding in the taste. I hope.

Ahaltocob is stabbing me in the right places. The fourteen adjuncts add up to a lovely throat piercing. The cinnamon is within a pinch of being too heavy, a place I never enjoy, but is restrained with a collar of vaniller, followed in order by cocoa, roast, with the chili peppers giving a low level of heat in the esophagus. Barrel? Not really. More of a lingering impression of alcohol heat in the sinuses than anything I can taste. Smooth. Warming. Belly warm. Mmmm.

The lack of barrel in a premium-price barrel aged beer limits the upside on this, but the adjuncts are very well done. Very good brew.

750ml bottle poured into an El Catador snifter. Bottle #128-1000. Part of the 11th edition of the CCB El Catador Club membership. Bourbon-barrel aged imperial stout with coffee, cinnamon, vanilla, cacao nibs and chili peppers. Sounds delicious!

Pours a thick motor oil black color with a really dark tan colored head. Coffee and bourbon/oak on the nose at first whiff. Holy smoothness! Wow, thick and smooth bodied is the first thing I can think of on the sip. The cinnamon give some spiciness up front, the vanilla smooths things out a little bit making room for another layer of heat and spice in the finish from the high ABV and peppers.

Overall, Cigar City nailed this beer. It’s like Hunahpu’s on steroids. Excellent!
