Marshal Zhukov's Imperial StoutMarshal Zhukov's Imperial Stout

Brewed by:
Cigar City Brewing
Florida, United States

Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to Georgy Zhukov, arguably one of the finest generals of World War II. Opaque black in color, with notes of espresso, chocolate, dark toffee and hints of backstrap molasses. The English hop varietals provide a subtle herbal dryness, and finishes with a hearty slap of roasty espresso. Pair Marshal Zhukov’s with Mushroom Solyanka, dark chocolate, cherries and ground wars in Russia.

We brew and release Zhukov's in the summer knowing that a beer of this heft reaches its full potential a few months after release. So save a bottle for the cold winter!

I loved the look, feel and taste. Not overpowering, but intense.

On tap at Brewskival.

Pours jet black with thick chocolate colored foam.

Smell is thick with roasted coffee and chocolate, with hints of licorice.

Taste follows the nose and throws in a bit of salty soy sauce. Long finish and very complex.

Mouthfeel is thick and oily, godd carbonation.

Overall, a very good imperial stout, with just the right amount of thickness in the body.

2017 release. Pours a viscous black with a modest, milk-chocolate colored head. Initial impression is dark chocolate, bitter coffee, molasses, caramel, and roasted malts. Mouthfeel is very thick and sticky. Carbonation is present but minimal. Quite hot - probably would mellow out with a year's cellaring, but I have a notable lack of self-restraint when it comes to trying a new RIS (my motto is "drink it fresh"). Finish is bitter chocolate. Definitely a sipper, but delicious!

Very dark appearance with slight tan head that dissipates quickly. Caramel aroma with a slight sweet touch. Taste is a caramel molasses that is a little bitter taste that may improve with age.

The beer pours a very vigorous chocolate brown head that looks pretty good. The beer itself is a nice looking opaque dark chocolate black with a nice melted chocolate thinness to it, which isn't too bad a look.

The smell is good. It has a very interesting herbal smell among the sweet milk chocolate and smokey malt notes. There is also a slightly sweet roastiness in the malts.

The taste is very good but goes down a little bit as it warms. The espresso roasted notes and the sweet dark chocolate work well together. The herbal hop notes aren't as present in the taste as they are in the smell but it is strong enough to mix well with the darker notes.

The feel is pretty good. It's a heavy bodied beer but feels smooth and slightly creamy with a bit of thinness (probably from the aging). The carbonation is fairly light but gives it a nice bite in the beginning. The beer has a fairly dry and bitter finish.

Overall, this was a really good beer and worth getting. It's definitely a good beer with rich notes and a wonderful feel as well.

22oz. bottle to snifter.

LOOK: thick, motor oil like dark dark black pour. A small dark brown head forms and recedes quickly as the thickness of the beer eats it up quickly. Does reform on josling, but fades again just as fast.

AROMA: Roasted barley is king here, notes of coffee, dark chocolate, tobacco, and leather.

TASTE: roasty goodness. the bitter malt flavors are well balanced here and this is very tasty. Simple and straightforward.

FEEL: thick, thick, thick. Maybe the thickest stout I've ever had. How can you carbonate a solid? Yet there is some bubbly. Like a carbon fiber composite.

One of the best straight up Russian Imperial Stouts. Bells Expedition and OB Ten Fidy are probably 2,3 now for me.

Very nice.

Pours a thick viscous pitch black color. Thick tight foamy brown head dissipates steadily leaving no lacing or residual head.

Smell has notes of espresso, chocolate, roasted malts, smoked bacon, dark fruits, brown sugar, and toffee. Incredibly complex aroma and very aromatic. Initially you get those dark fruit and sugary notes - it smells a bit sweet. But then that gives way into a smoked/roasted malt aroma with a bitter espresso finish.

Taste follows the nose with a sweet red wine, dark fruit, and chocolate array of flavors that slowly gives way to a peak of roasted malts, barley, smoked meat that gently gives way to some hoppy bitterness, bitter espresso, and some lingering charred malts. As the beer is consumed you get a real nice umami flavor that builds. The flavors on this are incredibly complex.

Feel is thick, viscous, oily, and full bodied. Medium carbonation provides a prickly tinge in the mouth. Bitter finish leaves a pretty dry finish. The alcohol provides a hint of heat that warms the insides, but it never gets to be too much.

Overall this is a fantastic Russian imperial stout - one of the most complex and flavorful RISs out there. A must try.

This is what an imperial stout is supposed to look like! Incredibly dark motor oil body, topped by a very dark brown, thick, viscous head. Retention is quite good.

Strong, boozy, roasty aroma. Char, chocolate, cream, toffee, grapes, nuts. It's deep and inviting and even a touch intimidating.

Flavor follows, with huge amounts of roasted barley (a la DFH WWS), slight sweetness in the form of brown sugar, toffee, and red grapes, and a creamy sense of chocolate. Pretty darn bitter. Slightly nutty char on the finish.

Feel is on par with the best imperial stouts. Think: Ten Fidy and Founders Imperial Stout. It's thick, chewy, and creamy; while the booze isn't exactly hidden, it becomes a part of the mouthfeel and hangs along for the ride, never becoming an unwanted passenger.

If ever there were a perfect successor for Old Rasputin, this is it. It reminds me of some of my absolute favorite RIS: Narwhal, Old Raspy, Ten Fidy, and FIS. It's a big, big, big bold brew, yet is wonderfully drinkable. For a non-adjunct RIS, this is superb.
