Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to Georgy Zhukov, arguably one of the finest generals of World War II. Opaque black in color, with notes of espresso, chocolate, dark toffee and hints of backstrap molasses. The English hop varietals provide a subtle herbal dryness, and finishes with a hearty slap of roasty espresso. Pair Marshal Zhukov’s with Mushroom Solyanka, dark chocolate, cherries and ground wars in Russia.

We brew and release Zhukov's in the summer knowing that a beer of this heft reaches its full potential a few months after release. So save a bottle for the cold winter!

A top-notch stout that is utterly balanced, high abv and tons of flavor with every edge smoothed off. The only downside is the smell, which is like fish sauce, soy/anchovy esque. Don't let that deter you - I tasted this side by side with about ten other Cigar City beers at a "tap takeover" event, many of the other beers were sweet, delicious, heavily flavored, and Zhukov was in a class by itself. A gateway to grownup beers, too bad it's only seasonally available and 16 bucks a bottle... but again it was the clear winner stacked up against ten other very tasty beers. Had it on draft, cask aged, thick body and completely black with a short dark brown head.

Inky jet black pour, super oily pour as it hits my snifter. Dark brown khaki colored head that sticks around for a minute, good lacing. Smell consists of heavy licorice, tabacco, dark chocolate and roasted malt. A certain grassiness quality about everything, even a copper like scent. Taste is super rich and decadent, heavy chocolate, rich roasty malts and licorice. Dark fruits like figs, plums etc. Mouthfeel is super thick, oily and palate coating. One of the more thicker beers I've ever tried. Low carbonation. Very impressive for a non barrel aged RIS. Would be interested in trying the BA variants.

Jet black in color with no light penetration. There's a fingernail of brown on the top. Moderate lacing. The aroma is comprised of chocolate, molasses, and alcohol. I taste roasted barley, molasses, chocolate, and fig. The mouth is viscous, lightly sticky, and velvety.

look: Black as all hell like a stout should be. dark mocha head that mostly recedes.
smell: gotta be the richest non BA stout i've sniffed, and richer than many of those. Not exactly BA nose but some of that rich vanilla and chocolate, dark toffee and espresso.
taste: just as rich as the nose and full of all those flavors. Damn fine stout.

2015 Bottle

Ruby brown in color with about a half inch of head that settles down but still remains. Some lacing as it drink down.

Aromas of dark fruit mixed with licorice. A bit of chocolate and coffee in there as well.

Taste is a mixture of molasses and dark fruit - raisins, figs, plums. Nice chocolate and coffee notes are also present.

Mouthful is heavy and very smooth. Carbonation is medium. Finish is even and semi dry.

No surprise here that a year on a RIS turned it into a quad. That being said, this is a big stout. The profile is a bit narrow when it is cold but as it warms, there is a whole heck of a lot going on especially with a nice boozy note that comes through in the nose and taste. I would recommend trying a fresh bottle and a aged bottle.
