Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to Georgy Zhukov, arguably one of the finest generals of World War II. Opaque black in color, with notes of espresso, chocolate, dark toffee and hints of backstrap molasses. The English hop varietals provide a subtle herbal dryness, and finishes with a hearty slap of roasty espresso. Pair Marshal Zhukov’s with Mushroom Solyanka, dark chocolate, cherries and ground wars in Russia.

We brew and release Zhukov's in the summer knowing that a beer of this heft reaches its full potential a few months after release. So save a bottle for the cold winter!

Amazing Russian Imperial Stout.

Pours a pitch black with a narrow dense layer of medium brown head.

The beer has a big heavy body that even leaves a molasses colored pattern on the interior of the glass.

Beer has a nice nose and a rich robust RIS bite. Phenomenal Beer.

Black with a foamy mocha cap, settles into a quarter inch lacing. Aroma is delicate, some classic dark malt with hints of English hops, burnt cherry, espresso & molasses. The taste is a nice balancing act between some of the huskier flavors with a gentle sweetness - there is definitely some blackstrap molasses / muscovado sugar throughout, it compliments those dark flavors well, towards the back palate you get more traditional roasted malt, coffee / espresso, vanilla and tobacco leaf. Ends with a dry English hop bitterness. Traditional and excellent.

Didn't look like a head was going to form at all but then after I got done pouring one did. And it's a beautiful dark brown chocolately head to a pitch black beer.
Smells of some dark fruit like raisins, then tobacco. Love this smell. Some sweetness but not chocolately.
Tastes a lot like the smell with the dark fruit and tobacco. Sweetness but it's balanced. This is reminding me a lot of evil twin stouts.
Feel is slightly warm with a medium body. Medium to light carbonation.
Overall, I really like this. Love the notes of dark fruit and the balanced sweetness

A: Poured into a snifter to a deep black beer topped by a dense and slightly fluffy two finger dark tan head which fades very slowly to a collar around the edge of the glass with some lacing.
S: Smells of roasty malts, bitter dark chocolate, slight dark fruits, and a little coffee
T: Tastes of dark roasted malts, chocolate, slight dark fruits with a little cherry, nice smoke and charred wood, and dark roasted coffee. Swallow is more roasted malts, chocolate, burnt sugars, and lingering coffee
M: This is a very viscous beer with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Carbonation is low but is adequate for the style and contributes to the mouthfeel. The beer has a dry finish due to the ABV.
O: Overall this is a fantastic beer. Great flavors and complexity really make this one a treat to drink. Alcohol is also well hidden at just below 12% so this one drinks deceptively easy. Definitely worth a try if you can get it.

Dark black, almost nonexistent burnt sienna head.
Dark roast, some fruit.
Espresso coffee, a little chocolate, raisins. Wonderful depth.
Dry, astringent.

Look: It pours black with a dark brown head. Head retention is low.

Smell: It has aromas of roast with a bit of dark chocolate mixed in. It has a moderate level of fruity esters like plums. There are also slight alcohol notes in the background.

Taste: It has flavors or roast with a very slight burnt element. There is a dark chocolate note in the background. There is also a dark coffee element in the background as well. The dark fruit feature is closest to plums.

Feel: It has a full body that is not quite chewy. It has a smooth texture and smooth alcohol warming. Carbonation is low as well.

Overall, this provides a complex flavor combination that doesn't contain may elements, but those elements are well defined and work together.

(750 ml bottle, shared between two fat tulip glasses)

L: lovely, dark brown liquid with a spongy mocha-colored foam that recedes rather rapidly into a frothy collar; very little lacing

S: at first, odd almost woolen sock / newspaper note that dominates, eventually giving way to initially medicinal alcohol and robustly roasty, nearly charred dark grain ... as it goes, dark baker's cocoa, hints of molasses and earthy hop slowly emerge, while a moderately bold overtone of that earlier char hangs over it all ... while the initial 'off' aromas do fade away, the resulting overall smell does become pleasant, but never irresistibly inviting

T: very British profile, with an excellent dimension to its malt flavors - brown bread, dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, very subtle roasted nuttiness... delicate earthy, evergreen hop note creeps up, while in the last 1/3 of the glass a lovely dark vinous artery swells up... alcohol is well worn down into the background... it could perhaps use a touch more bitterness OR sweetness, as the finish is a bit flat

F: remarkably smooth, as if it was aged several years - no burn, little sizzle, softly silken texture, on the lighter end of medium bodied; mellow, pleasing warmth...

O: pretty darn good, but don't feel it quite justifies the upwards of $16 price tag in this area... maybe a second sampling is in order?

Thick black beer that is covered with a dark brown head. Smells sweet with chocolate, coffee, molasses and roasted dark malts. Sweet and bitter with lots of coffee and dark chocolate. Some molasses in there as well. Quite a thick beer with a little bit of carbonation. A little alcohol heat is felt on the tongue. Great and tasty RIS.
