Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to Georgy Zhukov, arguably one of the finest generals of World War II. Opaque black in color, with notes of espresso, chocolate, dark toffee and hints of backstrap molasses. The English hop varietals provide a subtle herbal dryness, and finishes with a hearty slap of roasty espresso. Pair Marshal Zhukov’s with Mushroom Solyanka, dark chocolate, cherries and ground wars in Russia.

We brew and release Zhukov's in the summer knowing that a beer of this heft reaches its full potential a few months after release. So save a bottle for the cold winter!

Look- Dark brown with a dark tan head
Smell- Coffee, chocolate, toffee, roasted malt.
Taste- Very robust flavor. Sweet chocolate and roasted malt at the front with a sweet coffee finish. Excellent for an imperial stout
Feel- heavy bodied normal of an Imperial stout
Overall- Fantastic beer. Imperial stout with a rich sweet chocolate and coffee flavor. Pricey beer but definitely worth the investment.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a speiglau stout glass.

Look is pitch opaque black with a dark tan/ brown head.

Aroma is semi Belgian. Less dried roasted malt more dark fruits.

Taste is like a blend of a Belgian and a RIS in the best way possible. It is roasty but with a lot of complexity.

Absolutely delicious beer.

2015 Bomber

Thick, oily pour with a shallow tan head that settles and leaves solid lacing.

Smell is more dark fruit than malts, interesting non-adjunct imperial stout. Taste is right in line with this... there's a very thick body and nice malty backbone, but you don't necessarily get a lot of it in the taste... the taste is subtle, but sweet dark fruits like raisins/dates.

Really enjoyed this, and put it right up there with the best non barrel aged or adjunct stouts!

Bottle date 7/28/15:
This beer pours like the oft-cited motor oil, black and seemingly thick. After I stop the pour, the fairly deep brown head starts to bubble forth to eventually create a cm thick head. As I wait for it to warm slightly, the head collects creamily at the rim while a thin sheet covers the surface.

Nose is heavy on chocolate in the form of cocoa and candy bar, almost simultaneously. I'm expecting a sweeter beer with this nose because of this. There's a little coconut and raisin carob bon-bon note to this aged version. There's lighter accents of prune, dark cherry, fig and maybe the lightest note of alcohol.

Feel is thick, somewhat creamy, and oily, like the look. The very opening note is a subdued version of the wonderful nose - leaning sweet. The light fruit notes alight my palate for a second, but they leave as a smoky meat flavor comes forward. The chocolate notes continue along, and survive after the smoke to balance with it going into the end taste. As it warms, the smoke doesn't leave, but the chocolate has a little resurgent and I also can get some berry notes if I think about it. The feel smooths slightly with warmth, but there is a little bite from the smoky nature or the alcohol - not sure which.

This is a lovely looking and very fragrant beer. The taste shifts from the nose with the smoky notes I didn't get originally in the nose. Once I tasted it, though, the smoke came to my olfactory sense, taking a little part from the fruity notes I originally got. Definitely a strong example of an imperial stout!

650ml bottle, 2016 release, poured into a Cigar City Hunaphu "cursive" snifter glass. Enjoyed on 11.21.16, reviewed from Tasting Journal.

The beer pours a deep, jet black color, massive and thick, viscous and like pouring out motor oil while a thin, finger high caramel colored head that has great retention and excellent lace. The aroma is excellent, tons of bittersweet baker's chocolate, rich, roasted grains, soft, decadent stone fruits, which add a bit of acidity, roasted coffee bean with molasses, licorice and lingering brown sugar. The flavors are very intense, smooth chocolate, bittersweet, roasted grains really shine with a very pleasant toastiness that brings out the coffee character a bit, stone fruits linger with molasses, licorice, raisin and brown sugar, very pleasant. The mouthfeel is perfect, incredibly thick, heavy body, coating and full of great texture, creamy and soft with just enough life from the carbonation to add a bit of zippiness with a silky finish that is warm and lightly dry.

Verdict: An excellent RIS from Cigar City, really nice integration and layering of all the flavors. It hits pretty much all the marks, excellent body, rich and roasty flavors, lots of complexity and nice warmth at the finish. This was the perfect sipping beer for a cool evening.

Cigar City Brewing "Marshal Zhukov's Imperial Stout"
on tap @ World of Beer, Lady Lake, FL
$10 / snifter

In many ways Marshal Zhukov's is a fairly typical Imperial stout. But it's also a little more aggressive than many with a slap of alcohol that lets you know it's there, and an edge of espresso as opposed to coffee. It's what I'd call a take-no-prisoners version of the style that's better suited to fans of the style than stout lovers who are looking for something a bit stronger. Of course you'll never know until you try it, right? Recommended, but with warning.

General notes: Black body beneath a dark tan head. Very good head retention and better than average lacing. Aroma of ashen roast and dark chocolate. Flavor delivers more including fruit, caramel, alcohol, marzipan, and bittersweet chocolate. Densely roasty like espresso. Full bodied but oily and smooth with a fine-bubbled, gently zesty carbonation. Overall a bit hot even at 11.5% ABV.
