Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to Georgy Zhukov, arguably one of the finest generals of World War II. Opaque black in color, with notes of espresso, chocolate, dark toffee and hints of backstrap molasses. The English hop varietals provide a subtle herbal dryness, and finishes with a hearty slap of roasty espresso. Pair Marshal Zhukov’s with Mushroom Solyanka, dark chocolate, cherries and ground wars in Russia.

We brew and release Zhukov's in the summer knowing that a beer of this heft reaches its full potential a few months after release. So save a bottle for the cold winter!

look: 5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.25

Look: It pours black with a dark brown head. Head retention is low.

Smell: It has aromas of roast with a bit of dark chocolate mixed in. It has a moderate level of fruity esters like plums. There are also slight alcohol notes in the background.

Taste: It has flavors or roast with a very slight burnt element. There is a dark chocolate note in the background. There is also a dark coffee element in the background as well. The dark fruit feature is closest to plums.

Feel: It has a full body that is not quite chewy. It has a smooth texture and smooth alcohol warming. Carbonation is low as well.

Overall, this provides a complex flavor combination that doesn't contain may elements, but those elements are well defined and work together.

(750 ml bottle, shared between two fat tulip glasses)

L: lovely, dark brown liquid with a spongy mocha-colored foam that recedes rather rapidly into a frothy collar; very little lacing

S: at first, odd almost woolen sock / newspaper note that dominates, eventually giving way to initially medicinal alcohol and robustly roasty, nearly charred dark grain ... as it goes, dark baker's cocoa, hints of molasses and earthy hop slowly emerge, while a moderately bold overtone of that earlier char hangs over it all ... while the initial 'off' aromas do fade away, the resulting overall smell does become pleasant, but never irresistibly inviting

T: very British profile, with an excellent dimension to its malt flavors - brown bread, dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, very subtle roasted nuttiness... delicate earthy, evergreen hop note creeps up, while in the last 1/3 of the glass a lovely dark vinous artery swells up... alcohol is well worn down into the background... it could perhaps use a touch more bitterness OR sweetness, as the finish is a bit flat

F: remarkably smooth, as if it was aged several years - no burn, little sizzle, softly silken texture, on the lighter end of medium bodied; mellow, pleasing warmth...

O: pretty darn good, but don't feel it quite justifies the upwards of $16 price tag in this area... maybe a second sampling is in order?

Thick black beer that is covered with a dark brown head. Smells sweet with chocolate, coffee, molasses and roasted dark malts. Sweet and bitter with lots of coffee and dark chocolate. Some molasses in there as well. Quite a thick beer with a little bit of carbonation. A little alcohol heat is felt on the tongue. Great and tasty RIS.

Pours thick and dark, with minimal cocoa-colored head. Smells fudgey and chockful of dark-roasted malts. On the tongue, the chocolate is joined by floral and botanical bitterness, with a bit of tannic red wine, that produce a rather dry finish. I quite like the aroma, but the overall flavor profile is less satisfying.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown / black color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was a small amount of tan-colored, foamy head that quickly dissipated. Not a whole lot of lacing.

S: A good aroma of roasted malt, dark fruit, chocolate, and coffee.

T: Tasted of a decent shot of dark fruit (raisins, in particular), light hops (in the finish), some roasted malt, light espresso notes, dark chocolate, and a hint of molasses as well. A very solid flavor that seems to be much more focused on the dark fruit than the chocolate and espresso. Good, but more understated than it should be.

F: An average amount of carbonation with a velvety finish. Medium- to full-bodied.

O: This beer has its minor flaws, but it's still likable. Worth a look.
