What a beer. If you are in or around Florida, you've gotta try this out. It fits the atmosphere perfectly and is a great treat, you've gotta be there to get it and you've gotta be there to "get" it.

A: Pours a huge three finger foamy head and a clear amber orange color. No carbonation rising up, but it's damn beautiful.

S: Hoppy smells, papaya and passion fruit with slight pineapple

T: Great malty presence despite what the nose let on, while the hops still come in strong with out being overly potent (though this can is two months off the shelf), the hop taste is a pleasant candy papaya and passion fruit with slight herbal (weed) back notes. The malt bill is great, just enough sweetness to keep it from being dry - anyone who's been to Florida knows a dry drink wouldn't be the best idea.

M: Slight booziness and huge malt body - despite the massive hop character, it's not aggressively bitter; though, bitter it is. It's a very cool drinking beer, bold in all directions so much so that all is equalized. . . in a boldly neutral way.

O: Just a great beer that is my first when ever I visit the Sunshine State. It's best fresh, but if a few months of age wont rob you completely of the experience as it does with, say. . . Heady (condolences to anybody whom ever opened a two month old Heady with anticipation). I'd call it a titan of American IPA's, a must have representation of the East Coast Style from the deepest of the South. Word. . . 93.

In my opinion, Jai Alai IPA doesn't live up to it's hype. I've had it on 2 occasions and both times I was underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, it's a tasty IPA - lots of pine, citrus, and hops, but I've had much better IPA's - think Dogfish Head IPA's or my new personal favorite IPA, Creature Comforts Tropicalia.

Most beers fail to live up to "the hype". I bought a 6 pack of Jai Alai while traveling in Florida and assumed this would be the case, once again. But to my pleasant surprise, it lived up and then some. Grassy, citrusy, piney, hoppy... everything I want a complex IPA to be. The tropical fruit forward finish as the hops trail off takes this a from a good beer to a great beer. (I am told this is what is lost when no longer fresh) Now I just have to get my hands on some of the oak barrel version.

Look is orange with a nice thick inch and a half head of white foam. Smell is of grassy hops, citrus, and earth. Taste of bitter orange citrus, piney resin, and grassy dank hops. Nice full mouthfeel and a crisp slick hoppy aftertase.
