Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
One of Tampa's nicknames in addition to the Cigar City is the Big Guava. It earned the moniker from local newspaper columnist Steve Otto in the 1970's. The nickname eventually gave rise to one of Ybor City's most popular annual events, Guavaween. We brew Guava Grove in tribute to Tampa's fruity nickname. Guava Grove is brewed with a French strain of Saison yeast and sees a secondary fermentation on pink guava puree. Slightly tart with a dry finish this is a refined beer that is perfect for sharing.

Reviewed 1/21/12
2009 vintage

L: Pours very effervescent with a billowy head. Good head retention. Color: orange amber, slightly darker than most saisons.

S: Quite tart—bottle maybe infected, though other reviewers have noted the tartness as well. Sourness similar to a Flanders Red with faint tropical fruits and some spice.

T: Very tart upfront. Slight sweetness mid-sip, but really tipped towards sourness. Some tropical fruit hints. The high carbonation, tartness, and archetypical saison spiciness make for a very sharp sip. Some earthiness and slight bitterness in the finish.

F: Very high carbonation—turns to foam in your mouth. Just above a medium body. Leaves slickness on the palate. The fairly high ABV is not felt during sip—those 2-3 years on the shelf probably helped in that regard—but warms a bit when you set your glass down.

Overall: I rather enjoyed this one. It was very different from what I had expected; was anticipating much more fruity sweetness and much less tartness, but hey, I like surprises and this one was a pleasant one. Despite the ABV, this was crisp, refreshing, and surprisingly light. I'm thinking this might be a good beer to use to introduce someone to sours.

Pours cloudy orange color with a small head that faded and left zero lacing.

Smells of apricot, guava, sweet malt, biscuit, tart green apple, mild funk, wet cardboard, yeast, dry grass, hay and some spice like pepper and coriander. The sweetness and sour aspects make it like a juice, not really like a saison.

Tastes of sweet malt and sour apple up front, with a mix of tart, sour and spicy all hitting you at once. A nice mix of funky yeast, pepper, light cinnamon, mild clove, coriander, orange peel, rotting pear, white wine, citrus hops, banana, apricot, brown sugar, wet horse hair and buttery buiscit dipped in grapefruit juice; yep, the finish is like a biscuit or wheat bread crust dipped in orange or grapefruit juice, and I like it. Odd in its unique qualities, it is very easy to drink, hides the ABV well and gets better as it warns.

Mouthfeel is very creamy and smooth with a little zesty feel, a medium body that's leaning towards thicker, it has mild carbonation and a bitter slightly spicy finish that's on the clean side and full of nice spices. Really nice beer, not traditional but really damn good. Glad I was able to try it at the brewery.
